Pharmacological evaluation of the effects of enzymatically liberated fish oil on eosinophilic inflammation in animal models.

The inappropriate activation of eosinophils is a well-recognized driver of various human inflammatory diseases including asthma, chronic rhinitis, and various gastrointestinal diseases, including eosinophilic esophagitis. Steroids, both topical and systemic, remain a cornerstone of treatment and can be highly effective. However, some individuals suffer side effects, unresolved symptoms, or both. OmeGo, an enzymatically liberated fish oil, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as well the reduction of the activation, migration, and survival of eosinophils. Two animal mod

Fish oil supplementation and repeated macular hemorrhage without choroidal neovascularization: A case report.

Macular hemorrhage can occur spontaneously and repeatedly without choroidal neovascularization or other known lesions associated with myopia. We report a case of repeated myopic macular hemorrhage following fish oil supplementation. A 32-year-old male was referred with newly acquired paracentral scotoma in the left eye. Serial retinal imaging, including fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography were performed. Fundus photography and fluorescein angiography showed a subtle red-colored lesion nasal to the fovea. Optical coherence tomography sho

Effects of fish oil supplementation on eicosanoid production in patients at higher risk for colorectal cancer.

Fish oil supplementation may represent a potential chemopreventive agent for reducing colorectal cancer risk. The mechanism of action of fish oil is unknown but presumed to be related to eicosanoid modification. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of fish oil supplementation on the levels of urinary and rectal eicosanoids. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial of 2.5 g of fish oil per day compared with olive oil supplementation over a 6-month period. Study participants had a history of colorectal adenomas. Randomization was stratified based on the gene var

Pretreatment with intravenous fish oil reduces hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury in a murine model.

BACKGROUND: Ischemia reperfusion injury is a barrier to liver surgery and transplantation, particularly for steatotic livers. The purpose of this study was to determine if pretreatment with a single dose of intravenous fish oil decreases hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury and improves recovery of injured livers. METHODS: Sixty adult male C57BL/6 mice received 1 g/kg intravenous fish oil (Omegaven, Fresenius Kabi) or isovolumetric 0.9% NaCl (saline) via tail vein 1 hour before 30 minutes of 70% hepatic ischemia. Animals were killed 4, 8, or 24 hours postreperfusion, and livers were harvested

Intravenous fish oil in critically ill and surgical patients - Historical remarks and critical appraisal.

The purpose of this review is to explain the historical and clinical background for intravenous fish oil administration, to evaluate its results by using a product specific metaanalysis, and to stimulate further research in the immune-modulatory potential of fish oil. Concerning the immune-modulatory effects of fatty acids, a study revealed that ω-3 as well as ω-6 fatty acids would prolong transplant survival, and only a mixture with an ω-6:ω-3 ratio of 2.1:1 would give immune-neutral results. In 1998, the label of a newly registered fish oil emulsion also acknowledged this immune-neutral rati

Mice fed fish oil diet and upregulation of brown adipose tissue thermogenic markers.

PURPOSE: Fish oil (FO) elicits diverse beneficial effects. Reduction in or prevention of body mass (BM) gain in animal models may be associated with modulation of brown adipose tissue (BAT). We aimed to evaluate the effects of different high-fat diets with FO on BAT metabolism and thermogenic markers. METHODS: C57BL/6 male mice (3-month-old) were fed different diets during 8 weeks: standard-chow diet (SC 10% fat), high-fat lard diet (HF-L 50% fat), high-fat lard plus FO diet (HF-L+FO 50% fat), and high-fat FO diet (HF-FO 50% fat). We evaluated BM and performed an oral glucose tolerance test.

Fish Oil Accelerates Diet-Induced Entrainment of the Mouse Peripheral Clock via GPR120.

The circadian peripheral clock is entrained by restricted feeding (RF) at a fixed time of day, and insulin secretion regulates RF-induced entrainment of the peripheral clock in mice. Thus, carbohydrate-rich food may be ideal for facilitating RF-induced entrainment, although the role of dietary oils in insulin secretion and RF-induced entrainment has not been described. The soybean oil component of standard mouse chow was substituted with fish or soybean oil containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and/or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Tuna oil (high DHA/EPA), menhaden oil (standard), and DHA/EPA di

Fish oil improves gene targets of Down syndrome in C57BL and BALB/c mice.

We have considered a novel gene targeting approach for treating pathologies and conditions whose genetic bases are defined using diet and nutrition. One such condition is Down syndrome, which is linked to overexpression of RCAN1 on human chromosome 21 for some phenotypes. We hypothesize that a decrease in RCAN1 expression with dietary supplements in individuals with Down syndrome represents a potential treatment. Toward this, we used in vivo studies and bioinformatic analysis to identify potential healthy dietary RCAN1 expression modulators. We observed Rcan1 isoform 1 (Rcan1-1) protein reduct

Fish oil and antioxidants alter the composition and function of circulating mononuclear cells in Crohn disease.

BACKGROUND: Crohn disease (CD) is associated with osteoporosis and other extraintestinal manifestations that might be mediated by cytokines from circulating (peripheral blood) mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Fish oil rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) reduces disease activity in patients with CD with raised laboratory markers of inflammation and in healthy subjects alters PBMC function. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect of fish oil plus antioxidants on cytokine production by PBMCs from patients with CD with raised C-reactive protein concentrations (>/=6.9 mg/L)

Dietary fish-oil supplementation in experimental gram-negative infection and in cerebral malaria in mice.

Dietary fish-oil supplementation interferes with eicosanoid production and appears to decrease production of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). The effect of fish oil was investigated in an intramuscular Klebsiella pneumoniae infection in Swiss mice and in cerebral malaria induced by Plasmodium berghei in C57B1/6 mice. After a low inoculum of K. pneumoniae, 90% of fish oil-fed mice survived; survival in control mice fed equal amounts of corn or palm oil or normal chow was 30%, 40%, and 0, respectively. Cerebral malaria occurred in only 23% of fish oil-fed mice; in the contro

Growth performance, fatty acid composition, and lipid metabolism are altered in groupers (Epinephelus coioides) by dietary fish oil replacement with palm oil.

In this study, we conducted a 56-d feeding trial to investigate the effects of replacing the fish oil (FO) with palm oil (PO) on the performance, tissue fatty acid (FA) composition, and mRNA levels of genes related to hepatic lipid metabolism in grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Five isolipidic (13% crude lipid) and isonitrogenous (48% CP) diets were formulated by incrementally adding PO to the control diet (25% fish meal and 9% added FO) to replace FO in the control diets. Triplicate groups of 30 groupers (initial weight: 12.6 ± 0.1 g) were fed one of the diets twice daily, to apparent satiety.

Hepatocellular integrity after parenteral nutrition: comparison of a fish-oil-containing lipid emulsion with an olive-soybean oil-based lipid emulsion.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Parenteral nutrition including lipids might be associated with liver disease. The cause leading to parenteral nutrition-related liver dysfunction remains largely unknown but is likely to be multifactorial. The study was performed to assess the effects of a lipid emulsion based on soybean oil, medium-chain triglycerides, olive and fish oil (SMOFlipid20%) compared with a lipid emulsion based on olive and soybean oil on hepatic integrity. METHODS: In a prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial, 44 postoperative patients with an indication for parenteral nutrition we

Development of a fish oil-nanoemulsion gel as a drug-delivery system to prevent capsular contracture.

Capsular contracture, a significant complication of breast-implant surgery, causes pain and deformation following the formation of a tight capsule around an implant. Current surgical and non-surgical treatment options are invasive, expensive, and typically administered for prolonged periods, potentially leading to side effects. To address these challenges, we developed a novel fish oil-encapsulated, poloxamer-based nanoemulsion gel with omega-3 (ω3) as the primary active component (NE-ω3 gel; N3G). This formulation can be injected during surgery, reducing the need for prolonged administration
