Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from Tenacibaculum maritimum as a potential vaccine against fish tenacibaculosis.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) have been gained increasing attention in vaccinology due to their ability to induce strong protective humoral and cell-mediated immunity. The Gram-negative bacterium Tenacibaculum maritimum, the causative agent of marine tenacibaculosis, poses a significant challenge to the global aquaculture industry due to its difficult prophylaxis. In previous studies, we demonstrated that OMV production is a key virulence mechanism in T. maritimum. Building on this, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a natural, encapsulated multi-antigen vaccine made from adj

Longitudinal monitoring for respiratory pathogens in broiler chickens reveals co-infection of Chlamydia psittaci and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale.

Chlamydia psittaci is prevalent in broiler chicken production. However, the role of C. psittaci in the respiratory disease complex needs to be clarified. Our aim was to identify the time point when a C. psittaci infection appeared on a broiler farm and to examine the presence of other respiratory pathogens at that time. We focused on the 'major' respiratory pathogens occurring in Belgian broilers, namely infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae, and examined their co-occurrence with C. psi

The impact of geography and antimicrobial resistance on the incidence and outcomes of Elizabethkingia species bloodstream infection.

We conducted a 20-year statewide cohort of 115 Elizabethkingia bloodstream infections in Queensland, Australia. Incidence was ∼9-fold higher in tropical vs temperate regions, with 61 % community-onset. Ciprofloxacin susceptibility was 74.8 %. Thirty-day mortality was 14.9 %, and ciprofloxacin resistance independently predicted death, though interpretation is limited without treatment data.

Unravelling mass mortality in transported rohu (Labeo rohita) fingerlings: evidence of Flavobacterium columnare from Western India.

Columnaris disease caused by Flavobacterium columnare in freshwater farmed fishes is a severe problem, leading to considerable mortality. The present study investigated the mass mortality happened in Labeo rohita fingerlings within 48 h post-transportation from an organized fish farm in Maharashtra, India, to the laboratory. The moribund fish showed clinical signs analogous to columnaris and the bacterial isolation showed pale yellow rhizoid edged tightly adhered colonies which are found as slender rod-shaped bacteria by TEM. Molecular analysis of the isolate using 16S rRNA nucleotide homology

Susceptibility to columnaris disease in Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha offspring from thiamine-deficient and thiamine-replete females.

Nutrient deficiency can cause increased susceptibility to infectious diseases in fish, thus leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality. Thiamine deficiency complex (TDC) in fish can lead to low reproductive success and high mortality rates. Columnaris disease in salmonids, caused by Flavobacterium columnare, has resulted in devastating losses in aquaculture production and wild populations of Pacific salmon particularly associated with climate change and high water temperatures. There is growing awareness that both TDC and columnaris are emerging diseases of salmonids on the west coast of

Detection and characterization of protein methylation in bacteriophages and their host, Cellulophaga baltica, during infection.

UNLABELLED: Bacteria and their viruses (bacteriophages or phages) are in a dynamic "arms race" that balances predation and resistance, using various strategies to achieve dominance. To better understand these strategies, we infected the marine model bacterium Cellulophaga baltica with three previously characterized phages (phi18:1, phi18:4, and phi38:1), each with diverse genome types and infection efficiencies. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics measurements of the molecular signatures of the phage infection processes revealed that the percentage of peptides identified as methylated was appro

New culture medium enhances the isolation and culture of Flavobacterium psychrophilum, causative agent of bacterial coldwater disease and Rainbow Trout fry syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Flavobacterium psychrophilum causes bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD) and Rainbow Trout fry syndrome (RTFS) in salmonids, resulting in significant economic losses worldwide. Bacterial culture remains a widely used method for F. psychrophilum diagnostics and is core to BCWD and RTFS research; however, some isolates grow poorly on existing media. The primary goal of this study was to develop a solid culture medium that improves the in vitro recovery of F. psychrophilum across a diverse set of multilocus sequence typing variants. METHODS: Initially, CFU yields of 165 diverse F. psych

Efficacy of a Vaccine for Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) Using a Tenacibaculum dicentrarchi Strain Cultured Under Iron-Limited Conditions.

Tenacibaculosis, caused by T. dicentrarchi, results in skin lesions, ulceration, yellow plaques on teeth, and haemorrhaging in the operculum, peduncle and pectoral fins. It is the second leading cause of mortality in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Chile. Currently, no vaccine is available to prevent the disease. In silico and in vivo studies have shown that iron plays a key role in T. dicentrarchi infection. We hypothesised that culturing the TdCh05 vaccine strain under iron-limiting conditions (i.e., with non-assimilable iron chelator 2.2'-dipyridyl [DIP]) would enhance Atlantic salm

Whole-genome-based taxonomy as the most accurate approach to identify Flavobacterium species.

The genus Flavobacterium comprises a diversity of species, including fish pathogens. Multiple techniques have been used to identify isolates of this genus, such as phenotyping, polymerase chain reaction genotyping, and in silico whole-genome taxonomy. In this study, we demonstrate that whole-genome-based taxonomy, using average nucleotide identity and molecular phylogeny, is the most accurate approach for Flavobacterium species. We obtained various isolated strains from official collections; these strains had been previously characterized by a third party using various identification methodolo

Chitosan and anisodamine enhance the immersion immune efficacy of inactivated Elizabethkingia miricola vaccine in black spotted frogs.

Black spotted frogs have rich nutrition and delicious meat, and its market consumption has increased year by year. However, outbreaks of the diseases have caused huge losses to the breeding industry. The crooked head disease caused by Elizabethkingia miricola (E. miricola) is highly contagious and lethal, and there is no effective treatment method. Vaccination is the most promising strategy to prevent infectious diseases. Immersion vaccination has attracted many researchers because of its simplicity of operation in preventing infectious diseases. In addition, immersion vaccines can be more eff

Biochemical reference intervals and pathophysiological changes in Flavobacterium psychrophilum-resistant and -susceptible rainbow trout lines.

Host genetic resistance against disease-causing pathogens can be enhanced through family-based selective breeding. At present, there is an incomplete understanding of how artificial selection of fish alters host physiology and response following pathogen exposure. We previously reported the generation of selectively-bred rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss lines with either increased resistance (ARS-Fp-R) or susceptibility (ARS-Fp-S) to bacterial cold water disease (BCWD). This study (1) determined baseline reference-range intervals for packed cell volume (PCV) and 18 plasma biochemistry analyte

Risk factors for mortality in Elizabethkingia spp. bloodstream infections.

BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia spp. are uniquely challenging nosocomial pathogens to manage. Clinical breakpoints are not defined for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), levofloxacin or piperacillin-tazobactam. We describe the clinical, laboratory and microbiological parameters that are associated with increased mortality in patients with Elizabethkingia spp. bacteraemia. METHODS: We retrospectively examined consecutive patients with Elizabethkingia spp. bacteraemia from 2012 to 2024, comparing those who experienced in-hospital mortality and those who survived. Additionally, in the subgroup

Comparison of three species of Elizabethkingia genus by whole-genome sequence analysis.

Elizabethkingia are found to cause severe neonatal meningitis, nosocomial pneumonia, endocarditis and bacteremia. However, there are few studies on Elizabethkingia genus by comparative genomic analysis. In this study, three species of Elizabethkingia were found: E. meningoseptica, E. anophelis and E. miricola. Resistance genes and associated proteins of seven classes of antibiotics including beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides, tetracyclines, quinolones, sulfonamides and glycopeptides, as well as multidrug resistance efflux pumps were identified from 20 clinical isolates of Elizabethking

Investigation of a pseudo-outbreak of Myroides odoratimimus in high-dependency units reveals an environmental reservoir.

BACKGROUND: In mid-2025, a sudden increase in urinary isolates of Myroides spp, was observed in high-dependency units (HDUs) of a tertiary-care hospital. This study aimed to determine whether the clustering represented sustained transmission or a pseudo-outbreak linked to a common source. METHODS: A combined retrospective-prospective investigation was conducted in HDUs comprising 8 intensive care units and 1 palliative care unit (total capacity: 89 beds). Seventy-five unique patients with Myroides spp isolated from urine cultures between July 2024 and August 2025 were included. Prospective is
