Advancing blood group diagnosis with molecular methods: A focus on clinically challenging cases.

Traditional serological methods often struggle with the accurate identification of rare or complex blood groups. This study addresses the challenges in diagnosing clinically difficult blood groups by employing genotyping and sequencing techniques to enhance blood supply accuracy. Two patients with challenging blood groups underwent serological testing and molecular diagnostics using fluorescent PCR typing and Sanger sequencing. Patient 1 showed a discrepancy in serological typing, indicating a B subgroup confirmed by a B/O\*1 genotype and a 721C>T mutation in the ABO gene Exon 7, establishing

Everyday living with osteoarthritis in the global South: A qualitative focus group inquiry in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: Africa contributes significantly to the increasing global prevalence (>37 %), unmet need and treatment burden for people with osteoarthritis. Despite this, little research has examined the expressed needs of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and joint pain in West-Africa. This study aimed to explore lived experiences, expressed needs and current care gaps for people living with osteoarthritis in low-health resource contexts using Nigeria as a case study. DESIGN: Qualitative study using Focus Groups. People aged 45 years and over living with osteoarthritis and joint pain were recru

Insights into designing educational materials for persons living with dementia: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Persons living with dementia (PLWD) may experience communication difficulties that impact their ability to process written and pictorial information. Patient-facing education may help promote discontinuation of potentially inappropriate medications for older adults without dementia, but it is unclear how to adapt this approach for PLWD. Our objective was to solicit feedback from PLWD and their care partners to gain insights into the design of PLWD-facing deprescribing intervention materials and PLWD-facing education material more broadly. METHODS: We conducted 3 successive focus g

Overcoming the Digital Divide for Older Patients With Respiratory Disease: Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: The need for and adoption of eHealth programs are growing worldwide. However, access can be limited among patients with low socioeconomic backgrounds, often resulting in a so-called "digital divide" due to a mismatch between eHealth and target populations that can gain benefit. This digital divide can result in unsuccessful eHealth implementations, which is of critical importance to health care. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the opinions of elderly patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) about an existing pharmacy-based personalized patient web port

Acceptability of risk-based triage in cervical cancer screening: A focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the previous cytology-based program, the introduction of primary high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) based screening in 2017 has led to an increased number of referrals. To counter this, triage of hrHPV-positive women in cervical cancer screening can potentially be optimized by taking sociodemographic and lifestyle risk factors for cervical abnormalities into account. Therefore, it is essential to gain knowledge of the views of women (30-60 years) eligible for cervical cancer screening. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this qualitative study was to gain insight in the as

Teaching in radiation oncology: now and 2025-results of a focus group with medical students.

PURPOSE: In Germany, the new Licensing Regulations for Physicians 2025 (Ärztliche Approbationsordnung, ÄApprO) define a binding legal framework on the basis of which medical faculties modernize their curricula. Since 2015, the National Competence Based Learning Objectives Catalogue for Medicine 2.0 (Nationaler Kompetenzbasierter Lernzielkatalog 2.0., NKLM) formulates competencies and learning objectives to be achieved in the course of studies as curriculum orientation for the medical faculties. In addition, about 80% of the areas of a new core curriculum are to be made compulsory. A needs anal

Living with small fiber neuropathy: insights from qualitative focus group interviews.

OBJECTIVE: Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) is characterized by chronic neuropathic pain and autonomic dysfunction. Currently, symptomatic pharmacological treatment is often insufficient and frequently causes side effects. SFN patients have a reduced quality of life. However, little is known regarding whether psycho-social variables influence the development and maintenance of SFN-related disability and complaints. Additional knowledge may have consequences for the treatment of SFN. For example, factors such as thinking, feeling, and behavior are known to play roles in other chronic pain condition

Mobility experiences of adult lower limb orthosis users: a focus group study.

PURPOSE: People with lower limb impairments are often prescribed orthoses to preserve or enhance their mobility. Exploration of mobility experiences common among orthosis users may provide insights into how orthoses, and other mobility aids, are utilized and regarded. The objective of this study was to broadly explore how lower limb orthosis users describe their mobility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four focus groups were held online with participants who lived in the U.S. or Canada. Participants had at least six months of experience using an ankle-foot- and/or a knee-ankle-foot-orthosis for one o

Neglected bodily senses in women living with vertebral fracture: a focus group study.

OBJECTIVE: Older women are at particular risk of osteoporosis. Among women with osteoporosis, fractures of the vertebra (vertebral fracture) are common, hard to detect and associated with risk of further fracture. Identifying vertebral fracture in a timely manner allows instigation of preventive measures to reduce the risk of further fracture. Although detection of vertebral fracture requires spinal radiograph, many women do not receive referral. To begin development of a screening tool to identify women in need of referral we undertook a qualitative study to characterize women's experiences o

Investigation of group A Streptococcus immune responses in an endemic setting, with a particular focus on J8.

Sustained control of group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections in settings of poverty has proven to be challenging, and an effective vaccine may be the most practical long-term strategy to reduce GAS-related disease burden. Candidate GAS vaccines based on the J8 peptide have demonstrated promising immunogenicity in mice, however, less is known about the role of J8 antibodies in the human immune response to GAS infection. We analysed the stimulation of J8 antibodies in response to infection, and the role of existing J8 antibodies in protection against subsequent infection, using data collected in

Quality of life in mucopolysaccharidoses: construction of a specific measure using the focus group technique.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the perceptions of patients, their caregivers, and their healthcare providers to the development of a new specific instrument for assessment of the quality of life (QoL) in patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) using a qualitative focus group (FG) design. FGs were held in two Brazilian states (Rio Grande do Sul and Rio de Janeiro). RESULTS: Three versions of the new instrument were developed, each for a different age group: children (age 8-12 years), adolescents (age 13-17), and adults (age ≥ 18). The FGs mostly confirmed the relevance of items. All FGs unanimously

Women's preferences for contraceptive counseling in Mexico: Results from a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Client-centered contraceptive counseling is critical to meeting demand for contraception and protecting human rights. However, despite various efforts to optimize counseling, little is known outside of the United States about what individuals themselves value in counseling. In the present study we investigate women's preferences for contraceptive counseling in Mexico to inform efforts to improve service quality. METHODS: We conducted applied qualitative research, using six focus group discussions with 43 women in two cities in Mexico with distinct sizes and sociocultural contexts

Improving the postpartum care of women with a recent history of preeclampsia: a focus group study.

OBJECTIVE: Women with prior preeclampsia are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study investigated barriers and facilitators toward learning about this link and engaging in lifestyle modifications to reduce this risk. METHODS: Four focus groups were held with 14 women within 6 months of a preeclamptic pregnancy. RESULTS: Participants were unaware of the link between preeclampsia and CVD, suggested improvements to provider-patient communication, and discussed the benefits of social support and online tracking (weight, blood pressure) in making lifestyle modifications. A focus group study of the impact of trauma exposure in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

PURPOSE: Much of the mental health research that has emerged from the September 11 (9/11) attacks has been focused on posttraumatic stress disorder and its symptoms. To better understand the broader experience of individuals following a disaster, focus groups were conducted with individuals from affected companies both at Ground Zero and elsewhere in New York City. METHODS: Twenty-one focus groups with a total of 140 participants were conducted in the second post-9/11 year. Areas of identified concern were coded into the following themes: Disaster Experience, Emotional Responses, Workplace Is

[Treatment initiation in psychotic and manic episodes: French attitudes collected by Focus Group].

An accurate treatment of first episodes in schizophrenia and bipolar disorders has a significant impact on compliance and prognosis. However, existing therapeutic guidelines may be poorly respected and may concern only typical clinical situations. Medical attitudes in clinical practice have been collected and structured on the basis of small interactive meetings (Focus Group [FG]), and a synthesis of practical attitudes has been compared with updated guidelines. The FG method applied to treatment initiation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is seen as complementary to evidence-based guidel

It's not easy being green: the viridans group streptococci, with a focus on pediatric clinical manifestations.

The viridans group streptococci (VGS) are a heterogeneous group of organisms that can be human commensals, colonizing the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts in addition to the oral mucosa. VGS are generally considered to be of low pathogenic potential in immunocompetent individuals. However, in certain patient populations, VGS can cause invasive disease, such as endocarditis, intra-abdominal infection, and shock. Within the VGS, the rates and patterns of antimicrobial resistance vary greatly depending upon the species identification and the patient population. In general, Streptococcus
