An unusual presentation of pseudocowpox associated with an outbreak of pustular ulcerative vulvovaginitis in a Swedish dairy herd.

Species Pseudocowpox virus (PCPV; family Poxviridae) is known to cause pustular cutaneous disease in cattle. We describe an outbreak of pseudocowpox with an unusual clinical picture in a free-stall dairy herd of ~80 cows. Approximately 90% of the cows had vesicles, erosions, papules, and scabs on the vulva and vaginal mucosa. Histologic analysis of biopsy tissues indicated a primary, although not specified, viral infection. Transmission electron microscopy revealed parapoxvirus particles in both tissue and vesicular materials. Deep sequencing analysis of extracted DNA from swabbed vesicle area

Orf virus infection in humans--New York, Illinois, California, and Tennessee, 2004-2005.

Orf virus is a zoonotic parapoxvirus endemic to most countries in the world and is principally associated with small ruminants (e.g., sheep and goats). Human orf infections appear as ulcerative skin lesions after contact with an infected animal or contaminated fomite. This report summarizes the epidemiologic and laboratory investigations of four sporadic cases of human orf infection, emphasizing the temporal association between human lesions and skin trauma or recent flock vaccination with live orf vaccine. This zoonotic infection shares clinical manifestations and exposure risks with other, p

Scabies by Kenneth Mellanby.

BACKGROUND: Epidemics of scabies are often associated with wars or other times of social upheaval. This was particularly evident during the Second World War when it was estimated that there were one to two million patients with scabies in Great Britain. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the work of the zoologist Kenneth Mellanby of England and evaluates his contribution to our knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of scabies in the Second World War. CONCLUSION: Using humans, Mellanby studied the transmission and treatment of this disease. Among his contributions were knowledge of how many m

Staphylococcal bacterial contamination of portable electronic devices in a large veterinary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Portable electronic devices are used regularly within the veterinary and medical environments. Use of these in clinical areas may predispose them to bacterial contamination and they could act as fomites, transmitting infection between clinicians and patients. AIM: To determine the prevalence, origin and nature of Staphylococcal bacterial contamination on the surface of portable electronic devices used in a large small animal hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Staff were surveyed on the frequency of portable electronic device use and device-cleaning routines. Portable electronic dev

Persistence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Virus and Viral RNA in Relation to Surface Type and Contamination Concentration.

The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is likely to occur through a number of routes, including contact with contaminated surfaces. Many studies have used reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) analysis to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA on surfaces, but seldom has viable virus been detected. This paper investigates the viability over time of SARS-CoV-2 dried onto a range of materials and compares viability of the virus to RNA copies recovered and whether virus viability is concentration dependent. Viable virus persisted for the longest time on surgical mask material and stainless steel, with a 99.9% reduction in v

Keyboard cleanliness: a controlled study of the residual effect of chlorhexidine gluconate.

A controlled trial of once daily cleaning of computer keyboards in an intensive care unit was performed comparing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate-70% isopropyl alcohol (CHG) and a chlorine dioxide-based product used as a standard in our hospital. A study before and after the introduction of once daily keyboard cleaning with CHG in the wider hospital was also completed. Cleaning with CHG showed a sustained and significant reduction in bacterial colony forming units compared with the chlorine dioxide-based product, demonstrating its unique advantage of maintaining continuous keyboard cleanliness over

Identifying macroplastic pathobiomes and antibiotic resistance in a subtropical fish farm.

Macroplastics are ubiquitous in aquaculture ecosystems. However, to date the potential role of plastics as a support for bacterial biofilm that can include potential human pathogenic bacteria (PHPB) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) has been largely overlooked. In this study, we used a combination of metabarcoding and standard antibiotic susceptibility testing to study the pathobiome and resistome of macroplastics, fish guts and the environment in a marine aquaculture farm in Mauritius. Aquaculture macroplastics were found to be higher in PHPB, dominated by the Vibrionaceae family (0.34

COVID-19: the case for aerosol transmission.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most severe pandemic caused by a respiratory virus since the 1918 influenza pandemic. As is the case with other respiratory viruses, three modes of transmission have been invoked: contact (direct and through fomites), large droplets and aerosols. This narrative review makes the case that aerosol transmission is an important mode for COVID-19, through reviewing studies about bioaerosol physiology, detection of infectious SARS-CoV-2 in exhaled bioaerosols, prolonged SARS-CoV-2 infectivity persistence in aerosols created in the laboratory, detection of SARS-CoV-2 in a

Q fever in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Q fever was first described over fifty years ago. While in a proportion of cases there is a clear etiologic link to farm animals, their products, and fomites, in the majority of cases no such association is apparent, and the mode of infection is a mystery. METHODS: In this paper, we examine the reported incidence of Q fever in Israel since it was made notifiable in 1951, and in particular for the period 1981-1985, when special surveillance at national reference laboratories was carried out. RESULTS: Age and sex as well as urban-rural distributions suggest the influence of occupat

Molluscum contagiosum.

Molluscum contagiosum, a benign cutaneous infection of children and young adults, occurs throughout the world. Infectious virions apparently are transferred from the visible lesions to the skin of susceptible persons, either by direct contact or by fomites. Circumstantial evidence suggests that this infection is transmitted between young adults during sexual intercourse. The lesions of molluscum contagiosum are usually small, firm, umbilicated papules located on exposed skin of children or on genital skin in young adults. Such lesions are pathognomonic. Molluscum lesions resolve spontaneously;

Chemical disinfectants in ophthalmic practice.

The instrumentation used in ophthalmic clinics can be a source of epidemics in health care set up. Contact tonometry with Schiotz or Applanation tonometer is associated with nosocomial epidemic keratoconjunctivitis outbreaks. Recently identified SARS-CoV-2 (COVID -19) spreads mainly via the respiratory route and fomites and can transmit through other body fluids, including tear film. Various ophthalmic instruments can become a common source of spreading cross infections. Chemical disinfection is one of the most common methods employed to decontaminate instruments and environmental surfaces and

Common tinea infections in children.

The common dermatophyte genera Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton are major causes of superficial fungal infections in children. These infections (e.g., tinea corporis, pedis, cruris, and unguium) are typically acquired directly from contact with infected humans or animals or indirectly from exposure to contaminated soil or fomites. A diagnosis usually can be made with a focused history, physical examination, and potassium hydroxide microscopy. Occasionally, Wood's lamp examination, fungal culture, or histologic tissue examination is required. Most tinea infections can be managed wi

Coccidioidomycosis in non-endemic areas: a case series.

Coccidioidomycosis is a systemic infection caused by the soil fungus Coccidioides immitis, which is endemic to the south-western United States. Manifestations range from flu-like illness to pneumonia and septic shock. Diagnosis may be delayed or missed in non-endemic areas because of the low index of suspicion. We describe a series of 23 patients with coccidioidomycosis at one institution in a non-endemic area. Diagnosis was often delayed. In two patients, the route of exposure could not be determined, but 20 patients had a history of residence or travel to endemic areas, and the remaining pat

Mpox emergence and new vaccines: a story of susceptibility.

Mpox is a smallpox-like disease caused by the monkeypox virus. In 2022, a global outbreak of mpox resulted in more than 113 000 cases. Just a year later, a different strain of mpox caused the largest ever outbreak in Africa, with over 46 000 cases. Previous mpox epidemics were small, primarily occurred in Africa, had a case-fatality rate of 1-10%, and spread readily through contact with lesions and fomites. The new outbreaks had features never seen before with mpox - milder presentations and sexual transmission - that, together, fueled much wider dissemination of the disease. In this review, w

Environmental Persistence and Disinfection of Lassa Virus.

Lassa fever, caused by Lassa virus (LASV), is endemic to West Africa, where ≈300,000 illnesses and ≈5,000 deaths occur annually. LASV is primarily spread by infected multimammate rats via urine and fomites, highlighting the need to understand the environmental fate of LASV. We evaluated persistence of LASV Josiah and Sauerwald strains on surfaces, in aqueous solutions, and with sodium hypochlorite disinfection. Tested strains were more stable in deionized water (first-order rate constant [k] for Josiah, 0.23 days; for Sauerwald, k = 0.34 days) than primary influent wastewater (Josiah, k = 1.3

Prevention and Treatment of Monkeypox.

Human monkeypox is a zoonotic orthopoxvirus with presentation similar to smallpox. Monkeypox is transmitted incidentally to humans when they encounter infected animals. Reports have shown that the virus can also be transmitted through direct contact (sexual or skin-to-skin), respiratory droplets, and via fomites such as towels and bedding. Multiple medical countermeasures are stockpiled for orthopoxviruses such as monkeypox. Two vaccines are currently available, JYNNEOSTM (live, replication incompetent vaccinia virus) and ACAM2000® (live, replication competent vaccinia virus). While most cases

The Disease Ecology, Epidemiology, Clinical Manifestations, Management, Prevention, and Control of Increasing Human Infections with Animal Orthopoxviruses.

Zoonotic orthopoxvirus outbreaks have occurred repeatedly worldwide, including monkeypox in Africa and the United States, cowpox in Europe, camelpox in the Middle East and India, buffalopox in India, vaccinia in South America, and novel emerging orthopoxvirus infections in the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. Waning smallpox immunity may increase the potential for animal-to-human transmission followed by further community transmission person-to-person (as demonstrated by monkeypox and buffalopox outbreaks) and by contact with fomites (as demonstrated by camelpox, cowpox, and, po

Investigation of a swimming pool-associated cryptosporidiosis outbreak in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Cryptosporidiosis is a gastroenteric disease caused by the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium, which manifests primarily as watery diarrhoea. Transmitted via the faecal-oral route, infection with the parasite can occur through ingestion of water, food or other fomites contaminated with its infective oocyst stage. In the months of November and December 2012, there were 18 notified cases of cryptosporidiosis from Broome, Western Australia. The 5-year average for the Kimberley region for this period is <1 case. Interviews conducted by Broome local government staff on the notified cases revealed t

Management of scabies.

Scabies is a common contagious parasitic dermatosis. Transmission of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis generally occurs by skin-to-skin contact, but with crusted scabies it may also occur through fomites, such as infected clothing or bedding. Diagnosis is usually clinical. A 2010 updated Cochrane review concluded that management of scabies is based on topical scabicides, mainly 5% permethrin. However, oral ivermectin, although not licensed in many countries, may be useful, particularly for patients who cannot tolerate or comply with topical therapy and in institutional scabies epidemics.

Chlamydophila felis in cats--are the stray cats dangerous source of infection?

Chlamydophila felis is a causative agent of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, and pneumonia in cats. Natural transmission mostly occurs consequently to close contact with other infected cats, their aerosol and fomites. We have examined 93 cats with symptoms of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, from Košice region in Slovakia, during the period of 2 years. Conjunctival samples were obtained from 55 domestic cats (59.14%) and 38 stray cats (40.86%). Of the total number of 93 examined animals, 42 cats were positive, which represents 45.16% overall positivity. Out of the 42 positive cats, 25 cats wer
