Purpose: Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people experience high rates of poverty, joblessness, and homelessness, which drive risk for food insecurity. TGNC people also face discrimination due to transphobia and cissexism, which may contribute to these drivers. Minimal empirical evidence describes experiences with food insecurity among TGNC people. This project investigated food insecurity among TGNC people and how these experiences relate to their physical and mental health. Methods: Semistructured telephone interviews were conducted with 20 TGNC people residing in the Southeast Un

Food security among adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and households that include a person with IDD is an understudied area. We conducted in-depth interviews with 22 low-income food insecure adults with IDD and family members of children with IDD who resided in the U.S. during late 2024 and early 2025 to develop a thorough understanding of their household food security context The four members of the research team used a rapid deductive approach to code the interview transcripts. Coding agreement was assured by having all four members code a small set of initial int

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most common chronic diseases and leading causes of death among United States (U.S.) adults. Social public policies in the U.S. (including public assistance programs) have the potential to address the social determinants of CVDs and may indirectly contribute to a decline in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This review sought to examine associations between social public policies and CVDs among U.S. adults.
METHODS: Using PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase, a systematic search of full-text articles published between January, 1990 and J

Focus groups (n=65) were conducted with Hmong adults in St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN to determine how environmental factors, acculturation, and food insecurity influence dietary behavior, body mass index (BMI), and health. Acculturation was assessed by examining linguistic, social, and eating behavior, length of time in the US, and BMI for B-TL(1) (born in Thailand/Laos and in US < or =5 years), B-TL(2) (in Thailand/Laos through adolescence, had food memories, and in US >5 years), and B-US (born in US or in Thailand/Laos less than 8 years and no food memories from there). Acculturation was associa

Background/Objectives: Access to healthy and affordable food remains a challenge for under-resourced communities due to uneven food distribution and the need for reliable transportation. This study developed and evaluated an interactive Geographic Information System (GIS)-based food asset map for a low-income community in Windham, Connecticut to improve awareness of food resources and expand opportunities for fresh food access. Methods: Using the human-centered design (HCD) framework and the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) model, the map integrates food locations, transportation route

BACKGROUND: Examination of maternal experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and depression as risk factors for food insecurity can provide a more nuanced understanding of the role that the family environment and women's health plays in the lives of families with young children that experience food insecurity. We investigated the longitudinal association between mothers' experiences of IPV and household food insecurity, and whether maternal depression mediated the relationship.
METHODS: IPV, depression, and food insecurity were assessed among 1,690 socioeconomically disadvantaged mother

Current knowledge about food insecurity in North America is largely based on research with low-income households. Much less is known about the food experiences of homeless people, a group who are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity. This study explored the food experiences of street youth, one of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population in Canada. To gain an in-depth understanding of food insecurity within the context of daily life, ethnographic research was undertaken with street youth at one inner-city drop-in centre in Toronto, Canada. Results of this study reveal that

The aim of this study was to describe the types and extent of eating difficulties, the need for assistance when eating, the nutritional status and pressure ulcers in consecutive patients (n = 162) admitted for stroke rehabilitation over a period of 1 year. Structured observations and assessments of eating, nutritional status (subjective global assessment of nutritional status), pressure ulcers and activities in daily living (Katz ADL-index) were performed by a nurse who also trained the staff to perform these assessments. Difficulties in eating were found in 80%, and 52.5% were unable to eat w

BACKGROUND: Individual food insecurity, defined as having limited or uncertain access to food of sufficient quality and quantity, is associated with increased sexual risk behavior and diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection (STI), even after accounting for measures of socioeconomic status. Little is known about how food stress at the community level may exacerbate sexual and social vulnerabilities, or its potential association to a higher rate of STIs at the county level.
METHODS: We conducted an ecological analysis of the association between county-level reported rates of chlamydia, go

US Military Veterans experience higher rates of food insecurity compared to civilians, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Veterans is unclear. We conducted a nationwide survey of injured post-9/11 Veterans' food security, Coronavirus exposure, and nutrition habits. Of 193 Veterans, 63 (32.6%) were food insecure. Food insecurity was associated with Hispanic ethnicity (p = 0.02), prior homelessness (p = 0.003), combat service (p < 0.0001), and food-related worries (p = 0.003). Food insecure Veterans were more likely to report anxiety about stigma related to COVID-19 infection (p = 0.007)

BACKGROUND: Childhood food insecurity increased considerably during the COVID-19 pandemic and is associated with compromised health. Health care systems are increasingly prioritizing food insecurity interventions to improve health, but it is unclear how health systems collaborate with other sectors that are addressing food insecurity. In this study, we aimed to evaluate existing collaborations and explore opportunities for further cross-sector engagement.
METHODS: From December 2020 to March 2021, we conducted semi-structured interviews (N = 34) with informants involved in increasing child fo

BACKGROUND: The Thai government's initial response to the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) led to confusion and food insecurity in quarantined low-income communities. Although free food programs were initiated, no official assessment of their impact exists. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of these food programs by surveying the food requirements, food needs, and health behaviors of quarantined, densely populated communities in Bangkok.
METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 410 urban dwellers from quarantined communities who rece

OBJECTIVES: Eating difficulties are common for patients in hospitals (82% have one or more). Eating difficulties predict undernourishment, need for assistance when eating, length of hospital stay and level of care after hospital stay. Eating difficulties have through factor analysis (FA) been found to belong to three dimensions (ingestion, deglutition and energy). The present study investigates inter-observer reliability. Other questions at issue are if the findings from the previous FA can be confirmed, if adjustments need to be done and if the Minimal Eating Form (MEOF) can serve as an asses

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is high among infants younger than two years old, especially in disadvantaged populations.
OBJECTIVE: To study certain social and biological determinants associated with IDA in children aged 12 to 23.9 months old in Northeast Argentina in the 2004-2005 period.
METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional design. Explanatory outcome measures were organized in three levels: distal (food assistance, unmet basic needs, and head of household with medical coverage), intermediate (breastfeeding, iron supplementation, and iron intake), and proximal (nutri

Low-income elderly consumers, often overlooked in studies of public financial assistance programs, may face challenges in managing resources to maintain dietary health. This study examines how the payment frequency of an unconditional cash transfer program impacts dietary behaviors among low-income elderly populations in Colombia. Using nationally representative data from a federal financial assistance program, we implement a Multivalued Treatment Model with Propensity Score Matching and Augmented Inverse Probability Weighting to assess the effects of monthly versus bi-monthly payments on food

Background/Objectives: Policies to promote healthy eating often work through local food systems, which link food supply chains and food environments to individuals. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in national and global supply chains and emphasized the importance of local food systems in meeting community and individual needs. Unfortunately, we know too little about how to shape local food systems. This case study reports the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the New Orleans food system and the subsequent response from the community and local government to strengthen it through

In 2025, the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) eliminated Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility for refugees and other humanitarian entrants in the United States. This policy change occurs within a broader restrictive immigration environment and affects a population that experiences disproportionately high rates of food insecurity, compounded by structural, economic, and social barriers during resettlement. The policy may also affect immigrants who remain eligible for SNAP, as fears surrounding the immigration consequences of public benefit use may exacerbate 'chilling effec

BACKGROUND: The most recent statistics indicate that the prevalence of food insecurity in the United States is double that in Canada, but the extent to which the nutrition implications of this problem differ between the countries is not known.
OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to compare adequacy of nutrient intakes in relation to household food insecurity among youth and adults in Canada and the United States.
METHODS: Data from comparable nationally representative surveys, the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey and the 2003-2006 NHANES, were used to estimate prevalences of inadequate
