Brucellae through the food chain: the role of sheep, goats and springbok (Antidorcus marsupialis) as sources of human infections in Namibia.

A confirmed case of human brucellosis motivated an investigation into the potential source of infection in Namibia. Since domestic animals are principal sources of Brucella infection in humans, 1692 serum samples were screened from sheep, goats and cattle from 4 presumably at-risk farms and 900 springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) serum samples from 29 mixed farming units for Brucella antibodies by the Rose-Bengal test (RBT) and positive cases confirmed by complement fixation test (CFT). To assess the prevalence of human brucellosis, 137 abattoir employees were tested for Brucella antibodies usi

Substrate oxidation and control of food intake in men after a fat-substitute meal compared with meals supplemented with an isoenergetic load of carbohydrate, long-chain triacylglycerols, or medium-chain triacylglycerols.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that hunger may be delayed and food intake reduced under metabolic conditions that spare carbohydrate oxidation. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine the role of glucose metabolism in the control of food intake in men by using medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCTs) to spare carbohydrate oxidation. DESIGN: In 10 male volunteers, isolated and deprived of any time cues, we studied the effects of 4 lunches on hunger ratings, the duration of satiety, the amount of food ingested at dinner, energy expenditure, substrate oxidation, and plasma variables until the ti

Associations of Fecal Short Chain Fatty Acids With Colonic Transit, Fecal Bile Acid, and Food Intake in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) correlate with colonic transit time (CTT) and may influence irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) pathophysiology. However, the clinical significance of fecal SCFAs, relationships between SCFAs and other metabolites (bile acids [BAs]), and real-time diet effects on SCFAs in IBS are uncertain. The aim was to evaluate fecal SCFA associations with IBS phenotype and mechanisms and explore effects of real-time diet. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of fecal SCFA, BAs, and CTT in healthy controls (HCs) and participants with IBS. We compa

Preliminary Validation of a Food Frequency Questionnaire to Assess Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intake in Eye Care Practice.

Clinical recommendations relating to dietary omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) should consider an individual's baseline intake. The time, cost, and practicality constraints of current techniques for quantifying omega-3 levels limit the feasibility of applying these methods in some settings, such as eye care practice. This preliminary validation study, involving 40 adults, sought to assess the validity of a novel questionnaire, the Clinical Omega-3 Dietary Survey (CODS), for rapidly assessing long-chain omega-3 intake. Estimated dietary intakes of long-chain omega-3s from CODS correlated wit

A β-diketone main-chain polymer fluorescence sensor for rapid screening and quantitative fluorescent detection of aluminum in food products.

Aluminum additives in flour-based foods pose safety concerns and require rapid monitoring. This study presents a high-performance β-diketone main-chain polymer fluorescence sensor synthesized via Friedel-Crafts acylation for specific aluminum detection. This preparation method yielded a polymer with superior sponge-like porosity and extended π-conjugation. Upon Al3+ coordination, the probe exhibits a distinct fluorescence transition from dim green to brilliant deep blue, enabling visual identification. The response follows a positive cooperative logistic model, achieving a limit of detection o

Gut microbiota and metabolic disruption induced by food chain-transferred nanoplastics: A mediating role of CYP26A1 in retinoic acid toxicity.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) pollution has emerged as critical environmental and public health concerns due to their potential for bioaccumulation and systemic toxicity. While our previous work demonstrated the trophic transfer of micro- and nanoplastics from insect yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) to mammals, the biological consequences remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the impact of food chain-transferred PS-NPs (FCT-NPs) on the gut-liver axis in a mouse model. We demonstrate that FCT-NPs induce gut microbiota dysbiosis, disrupt metabolic homeostasis, and alte

Closing the micronutrient loop: recovering and redirecting trace elements from food supply chains for a circular and nutrition-secure future.

Micronutrient deficiencies remain a major issue in the lives of billions of people worldwide. Meanwhile, significant losses occur along the food chain for many important micronutrient trace elements, which further compounds this global nutrition problem. The micronutrient stream of iron, zinc, selenium, copper and others are lost in agriculture residues, food processing by-products, retail waste, wastewater and post-consumer organic wastes. These deficiencies do not only lower nutritional efficiency, but also lead to environmental degradation and resource depletion. In response, approaches to

Synchronous changes in mercury stable isotopes and compound-specific amino acid nitrogen isotopes in organisms through food chains.

The relationship between stable isotope of mercury (Hg, Δ199Hg and δ202Hg) and compound-specific nitrogen isotope of amino acids (CSIA-AA, δ15NGlu and δ15NPhe) remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated bird species and their prey in an abandoned Hg mining area, southern China to elucidate these correlations for a better understanding of Hg sources, biological transfer, accumulation and amplification through food chains. Our findings revealed distinct isotopic patterns: Δ199Hg showed a positive correlation with δ15NGlu, indicating trophic transfer processes, while a negative cor

Quantity and quality of food losses along the Swiss potato supply chain: Stepwise investigation and the influence of quality standards on losses.

This paper presents the results of a stepwise investigation of the quantity and quality of food losses along the Swiss potato supply chain. Quantitative data were collected from field trials, from structured interviews with wholesalers, processors and retailers, and from consumer surveys in combination with a 30-day diary study. The "Swiss trade customs for potatoes" pose the basis for the qualitative evaluation of losses. The influences of technological, institutional (business and economy; legislation and policy), and social drivers on the generation of fresh potato and processed potato prod

Lead and Cadmium Induced Toxicity Under Prolonged Low-Dose Exposure: Food Chain Driven Source, Molecular Mechanisms, Signaling Cascade, and Health Implications.

Exposure of humans to heavy metals such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) has been significantly increased due to the industrial activities of the past century and causes global health concerns. Pb and Cd can encounter humans through both dietary and environmental pathways. Despite extensive research on individual metals, the integrated mechanisms of mixed Pb-Cd exposure remain poorly understood, especially under chronic low-dose conditions representative of a real-world scenario. Hence, the present review focuses on the acute effects of Pb and Cd on human disease, intracellular dynamics, their di

The role of Campylobacter group II phages in mitigating Campylobacter contamination across the poultry food chain: Current applications and future prospects.

Campylobacteriosis is a major foodborne diseases, with an estimated 96 million cases worldwide annually. Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Campylobacter coli (C. coli) are major causes of human gastroenteritis, and poultry products are the main transmission source. An increasing incidence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Campylobacter strains further complicates the control of these pathogens in the food chain. Although various approaches have been explored, phage biocontrol, particularly with Campylobacter group II phages, has shown promise in controlled preharvest and postharvest s

Overcoming Multidrug Resistance in Salmonella spp. Isolates Obtained From the Swine Food Chain by Using Essential Oils: An in vitro Study.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global concern, and new approaches are needed to circumvent animal and food-borne resistant pathogens. Among the new strategies, the combination of antibiotics with natural compounds such as essential oils (EOs) could be an alternative to challenge bacterial resistance. The present study evaluates the phenotypic and genotypic antibiotic resistance of 36 Salmonella enterica (16 S. Typhimurium, 3 monophasic variant S. Typhimurium, 8 S. Enteritidis, 6 S. Rissen, 1 S. Typhi, and 2 S. Derby) strains, isolated from the swine production chain. The isolates displaye

Lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria deliberately introduced into the agro-food chain do not significantly increase the antimicrobial resistance gene pool.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and bifidobacteria may serve as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance, but the risk posed by strains intentionally introduced into the agro-food chain has not yet been thoroughly investigated. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether probiotics, starter and protective cultures, and feed additives represent a risk to human health. In addition to commercial strains of LAB and bifidobacteria, isolates from human milk or colostrum, intestinal mucosa or feces, and fermented products were analyzed. Phenotypic susceptibility data of 474 strains showed that antimicrobia
