Approximately 1.3 billion metric tons of agricultural and food waste is produced annually, highlighting the need for appropriate processing and management strategies. This paper provides an exhaustive overview of the utilization of agri-food waste as a biosorbents for the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from gaseous streams. The review paper underscores the critical role of waste management in the context of a circular economy, wherein waste is not viewed as a final product, but rather as a valuable resource for innovative processes. This perspective is consistent with the pri

BACKGROUND: Zambia was a pioneer when it started fortifying sugar with vitamin A in 1998. Micronutrient deficiencies-especially among young children-have changed little over the past decade. In 2008 an initiative to introduce fortified flours was halted when last-hour questions about the program could not be answered.
OBJECTIVE: To provide information about the need, coverage, and impact of alternative fortification portfolio options to help Zambia overcome its fortification impasse.
METHODS: Using household data from the 2006 Living Conditions Monitoring Survey, apparent micronutrient intak

Cronobacter sakazakii and Enterobacter cloacae exhibit the ability to form biofilms, making them resistant to drying, antibiotics, and changes in pH. These biofilms can adhere to different surfaces, including tissues, catheters, enteral feeding tubes, and work surfaces, potentially leading to cross-infection risks in both the food and medical sectors. The objective of this study was to develop a predictive model of biofilm formation over time by C. sakazakii and E. cloacae on medical polyvinyl chloride (PVC) at 37 °C and stainless steel (SS), polypropylene (PP) surfaces at 4 °C and different m

Taste is a crucial organoleptic characteristic that determines whether a substance will be accepted for delivery through the mouth. However, the vast majority of medications have an unpleasant taste. Drugs with a bitter taste are often depicted using a variety of flavouring compounds to increase patient acceptance and compliance. Human panellists are the principal means of assessing the flavour of medication ingredients and formulations. Due to the toxicity of medications and subjectivity of taste panellists, as well as issues with hiring taste panellists and panel upkeep when working with unp

Bacterial contamination of meat products during its preparation at the enterprise is an important problem for the global food industry. Cutting boards are one of the main sources of infection. In order to solve this problem, the creation of mechanically stable coatings with antibacterial activity is one of the most promising strategies. For such a coating, we developed a composite material based on "liquid" Teflon and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). The nanoparticles obtained with laser ablation had a rod-like morphology, an average size of ~60 nm, and a ζ-potential of +30 mV. The polymer

BACKGROUND: The microorganisms that inhabit food processing environments (FPE) can strongly influence the associated food quality and safety. In particular, the possibility that FPE may act as a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, and a hotspot for the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is a concern in meat processing plants. Here, we monitor microbial succession and resistome dynamics relating to FPE through a detailed analysis of a newly opened pork cutting plant over 1.5 years of activity.
RESULTS: We identified a relatively restricted principal microbiota dom

High-throughput food sorting requires rapid, non-destructive detection of external defects, foreign materials, and internal quality attributes in heterogeneous food matrices. Conventional scanning hyperspectral imaging may suffer from motion-induced spatial-spectral mismatches, whereas snapshot hyperspectral imaging (S-HSI) captures spectral images within a single integration time. However, its advantage is limited by trade-offs in resolution, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), reconstruction uncertainty, and calibration stability, which are further amplified by variable tissue structure, surface re

In this work there was investigated the synergistic effect of the nanomaterials-the Montmorillonite (MMT) and the vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) on the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/starch composite. The composite films were prepared by the solvent casting method. The characterization of the composites showed that the addition of the MMT and the V2O5 to PVA/starch composite decreased the water solubility and water absorption capacity of the film. Both of the reinforcement materials enriched values of thermal conductivity and thermal stability of the composite. The TG/DTA and universal testing machine (UT

Onion is one of the most consumed and produced vegetables globally, recognized for its widespread health benefits and nutraceutical properties attributed to its rich composition of bioactive compounds with diverse biological activities. The postharvest, consumption, and industrial processing of onions generate substantial amounts of by-products, posing significant environmental and socioeconomic challenges. Given that these by-products are also abundant in bioactive compounds, a potential strategy for their valorization and mitigation of their adverse impacts involves extracting these compound

BACKGROUND: Corporations use a range of strategies to dispute their role in causing public health harms and to limit the scope of effective public health interventions. This is well documented in relation to the activities of the tobacco industry, but research on other industries is less well developed. We therefore analysed public statements and documents from four unhealthy commodity industries to investigate whether and how they used arguments about complexity in this way.
METHODS: We analysed alcohol, food, soda and gambling industry documents and websites and minutes of reports of releva

Global hazelnut production generates significant quantities of skin, an underutilized coproduct currently restricted to low-value applications despite its rich bioactives, dietary polyphenols, and dietary fibres. Valorising this residue aligns with circular economy principles by transforming agro-industrial waste into high-value resources. Hazelnut skin is identified as an exceptional source of dietary fibre (∼70%), vitamin E, and dietary polyphenols, exhibiting antioxidant activity significantly superior to hazelnut kernel. Its unique fibre composition, particularly specific pectin and xylogl
