Impacts of COVID-19 on global poverty, food security, and diets: Insights from global model scenario analysis.

This study assesses the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on poverty, food insecurity, and diets, accounting for the complex links between the crisis and the incomes and living costs of vulnerable households. Key elements are impacts on labor supply, effects of social distancing, shifts in demand from services involving close contact, increases in the cost of logistics in food and other supply chains, and reductions in savings and investment. These are examined using IFPRI's global general equilibrium model linked to epidemiological and household models. The simulations suggest tha

A review of historical and recent locust outbreaks: Links to global warming, food security and mitigation strategies.

Locusts differ from ordinary grasshoppers in their ability to swarm over long distances and are among the oldest migratory pests. The ecology and biology of locusts make them among the most devastating pests worldwide and hence the calls for actions to prevent the next outbreaks. The most destructive of all locust species is the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria). Here, we review the current locust epidemic 2020 outbreak and its causes and prevention including the green technologies that may provide a reference for future directions of locust control and food security. Massive locust outbre

Barriers and Facilitators to Food Security among Adult Burundian and Congolese Refugee Females Resettled in the US.

Sub-Saharan African refugees in the US have reported food security rates seven times below the national average. Dietary acculturation issues may be a contributing factor. Criterion-specific sample (n = 18) was recruited using network then snowball sampling methods. Semi-structured interviews were facilitated with the aid of a culturally and linguistically appropriate interpreter. An iterative, two cycle coding analytic process was completed within NVivo 11 by two coders who sought inter-rater reliability. Codes were organized into hierarchical maps and coding matrices for direct content analy

Navigating the syndemic: a socio-psychological approach to food security and responsible consumption in low-income populations.

Global food security is currently a priority, especially amid a "grim regression" that is undermining efforts to eradicate malnutrition by 2030. This perspective argues that the current crisis is not merely a supply chain disruption but a syndemic convergence where biological threats and economic instability interact to erode consumer agency. We posit that vulnerable populations are forced into a "lethal calculation," prioritizing immediate caloric survival over food security and long-term health, thereby becoming trapped in cycles of ultra-processed food consumption. To address this, we chall

Assessing food security and environmental quality under policy stringency and geopolitics using counterfactual and machine learning approaches.

The provision of food security promotes sustainable economic growth by fostering healthier and more productive populations. However, achieving food security can impose environmental costs, as production and distribution processes contribute to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource depletion. Environmental policy stringency plays a critical role in mitigating these impacts by regulating industrial practices and promoting sustainable technologies. This study examines the relationship between food security and environmental policy stringency in shaping greenhouse gas emissions and

Perceptions of Food and Nutrition Security Among Adults With chronic kidney disease, Nondialysis: A Mixed Method Study.

OBJECTIVE: Food and nutrition insecurity may contribute to the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Current metrics to measure food and nutrition security (FANS) status may not capture the nuances associated with these concepts. The purpose of this mixed method study was to examine perceptions of FANS of adults with CKD, nondialysis. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-method study was conducted from March to August 2024. Participants (n = 60) completed a survey that focused on the dimensions of FANS and diet quality. A sub-section of participants (n = 23) completed an interview t

Are infectious reproductive pathogens of large ruminants a threat to improving food security? An investigation from Cambodia.

In Cambodia, information on common pathogens causing reproductive losses in cattle and buffalo are lacking, despite there being a need to address livestock health to enhance food security. We analysed stored buffalo (n = 29) and cattle (n = 471) serum samples collected in 2016 using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Antibodies to Neospora caninum, bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo and Brucella abortus were detected in buffalo samples at 79.3% (95% CI 64.6-94.0), 3.4% (95% CI 0-10.0), 0% and 0%, respectively, and in cattle at

Salinity negatively correlates with the production and immunity of chicken: A molecular insight for food security and safety issues.

Salinity intrusion into the freshwater system due to climate change and anthropogenic activities is a growing global concern, which has made humans and domesticated animals more susceptible to diseases, resulting in less productivity. However, the effects of salinity on domesticated and wild birds, especially in terms of production and immunity, have not been fully elucidated yet. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the effects of salinity on the production and immunity of birds and the mechanisms by which immunity is compromised. Broiler chicks were subjected to different concentrat

Compound impact of COVID-19, economy and climate on the spatial distribution of global agriculture and food security.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold around the world, the per unit area yield of the world's three major crops (i.e. maize, rice and wheat) decreased simultaneously for the first time in 20 years, and nearly 2.37 billion people faced food insecurity in 2020. Around 119-124 million people were pushed back into extreme poverty. Drought is one of the natural hazards that mostly affect agricultural production, and 2020 is one of the three warmest years on record. When the pandemic, economic recession and extreme climate change occur simultaneously, food crisis will often be exacerbated. D

Associations between frailty severity and dietary quality and food security among older Korean adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty in older adults is a multidimensional condition that extends beyond physical decline to include emotional and psychological vulnerability. However, evidence on how food security and overall diet quality vary according to frailty severity among older Korean adults is limited. This study aimed to systematically examine the associations between food security and diet quality, and frailty severity in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2020. Among the 62,686 par

Research neglect of root system architecture in root and tuber crops important for Sub-Saharan African Food Security.

BACKGROUND: Root and tuber crops (RTCs) provide 354 kcal/capita/day across sub-Saharan Africa (17.7% of dietary energy from major crop categories), and several countries derive over 40% of crop calories from cassava, yam, sweet potato, taro, and cocoyam. Despite this, research on the root systems that give rise to their harvested storage organs remains limited and concentrated in regions where RTCs contribute little to food security. METHODS: We combined food supply data for 46 sub-Saharan African countries (2018-2022) with a systematic bibliometric analysis of 893 RTC publications (1939-2025

Rural-urban disparities in child nutrition in Tabora, Tanzania: a socioeconomic decomposition and implications for food security policy.

Child malnutrition remains a major barrier to human capital development in sub-Saharan Africa, yet the drivers of rural-urban inequalities remain insufficiently understood. This study examines socioeconomic disparities in child health between rural and urban households in Tabora, Tanzania, using cross-sectional data from 490 households across seven districts. Employing Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition, instrumental variable (IV) estimation, and structural equation modeling (SEM), the study finds a pronounced rural-urban gap in child nutrition, with a Height-for-Age Z-score difference of -0.685, in

Bovine Leukemia Virus as a One Health Challenge in Nutrition, Food Security, and Public Health: A Narrative Review.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is among the most prevalent infectious diseases of dairy cattle, with herd-level infection rates exceeding 80% in many regions worldwide. Although only a minority of infected animals develop clinical enzootic bovine leukosis, subclinical effects are widespread and extend beyond animal health. This narrative review examines BLV through a One Health lens, emphasizing its nutritional, food security, and public health dimensions. Relevant literature was identified through targeted searches of major scientific databases using terms related to BLV, milk composition, nutri
