In the early 1980s the Japanese scientific academy defined a functional food as a food having a tertiary or physiologically active function. The current Japanese "Food with Health Claims" include 2 categories. For the first category, "Food with Nutrient Function Claims," the label may be freely used if a product satisfies the standard for the minimum and maximum levels per daily portion usually consumed. The second category is defined as "Food for Specified Health Uses" (FOSHU). FOSHU foods are those that contain dietary ingredients that have beneficial effects on the physiological functions o

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath changed numerous social and economic environments. Food insecurity rates rose with potential negative ramifications for infant feeding methods. The relationship between food insecurity and infant feeding practices since the onset of the pandemic is not yet fully understood. We examined these relationships in a cohort of infants born during the onset and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of infants enrolled from birth into the COVID-19 Mother-Baby Outcomes (COMBO) study and bo

Objective: Despite alarming rates of students' food insecurity in the US (41%), estimates may not be fully capturing experiences in university settings. Understanding students' food insecurity is a knowledge gap flagged amidst outstanding progress on food security measurement in household settings. This study investigated the domains shaping the experiences around food with implications for food insecurity among students. Participants and Methods: Of 178 students aged 18 years or older who reported worrying about food running out, eating insufficient amounts of food, and lacking balanced meals

INTRODUCTION: Poor diets are a remediable risk factor for non-communicable diseases. Sickness absence rates for national health service (NHS) staff are substantially higher than the public sector average (5.6% vs. 3.6%). Hospital inpatients are often being treated for the downstream consequences of poor diets. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses support national health recommendations for plant-based diets that emphasise consumption of varied whole plant-source foods with minimal consumption of animal products. These diets are increasingly recognised as compatible with planetary health and ar

The COVID-19 pandemic forced adult day services (ADS) to close and abruptly end in-person services to clients. To understand the effect of the pandemic on ADS, a 20-item survey was used to examine services provided, staffing, finances, and plans to reopen. Data came from 22 sites participating in the Adult Day Service Plus a national randomized controlled trial. Of the 22 ADS sites responding to the survey, most (86.4%, n = 19) closed due to COVID-19 with nearly half closing due to a state mandate (52.6%, n = 10). Most sites reported the need to furlough or terminate staff (63.6%, n = 14). Ser

Drop-in centers offer a range of services to assist unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness, but little is known about their perceptions of drop-in centers or use of different services. A random sample of 273 youth experiencing homelessness in the Los Angeles area who had ever used a drop-in center was surveyed. Most youth heard about local drop-in centers from peers (65.1%). They generally reported positive perceptions of the drop-in center environment, staff, and clients; overall, 57.8% were "very" or "extremely" satisfied with the services they had received. Nearly all youth cited bas

It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that children and adolescents should have access to safe and healthy foods that promote physical, cognitive, and social growth and development. Federally funded nutrition assistance programs, such as food assistance, meal service, and nutrition education, play a vital role in ensuring that children and adolescents have access to the foods they need and in improving the overall nutrition and health environments of communities. Federally funded nutrition assistance programs help to ensure that children and adolescents receive safe, hea

The Psychosocial and Economic Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Mathare slums were adverse which necessitated mitigation strategies to be employed to cushion the most vulnerable and help them cope with the new 'state of affairs'. The pandemic was characterized by a surge in the respiratory infections, unemployment, households going hungry, gender-based violence in families, child abuse cases and increased rates of teenage pregnancy. Retrospective case study design was employed; secondary data from hospital departments were extracted for analysis from March 2020 to December 2021. Interventions in

BACKGROUND: Insufficiencies in complementary feeding put infants and young children at increased risk of undernutrition. Till now, most Indian studies have looked at the individual level determinants of complementary feeding practices. We aimed to evaluate the association of frontline worker (FLW) provided nutritional counselling services, with change in community level indicators of complementary feeding practices among 9-11 month old children over time.

Food insecurity has been linked to poor physical and mental health as well as HIV risk behaviors. While prior research has shown that drug users are prone to food insecurity it is unclear if drug use exacerbates the physical and psychosocial consequences. A sample of women who used drugs (DU) (specifically heroin and cocaine) and women who did not use drugs (NDU) were examined to determine if the relationship between food insecurity and depression varied by drug use status. Approximately 29% (n=128) of the total sample experienced food insecurity. DU women were more likely to be food insecure.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate positive serious psychological distress and suicide-risk screening prevalence across identity-by-food-security groups.
PARTICIPANTS: 215,330 US college students from four ACHA-NCHA IIIb administrations (Fall 2023 to Spring 2025).
METHODS: Prevalence was estimated across three identity groups and four food-security levels, and binary logistic models estimated mutually adjusted associations and tested identity-by-food-security interaction.
RESULTS: Serious distress ranged from 8.7% (cisgender heterosexual, high food security) to 55.9% (gender diverse, very low food secu

INTRODUCTION: Maternal undernutrition remains a major public health concern globally, particularly in Somalia, where conflict, poverty, and food insecurity exacerbate nutritional deficiencies. Undernutrition during pregnancy poses serious risks to both maternal and fetal health, including increased maternal mortality, low birth weight, and adverse developmental outcomes. Despite its critical implications, there is limited evidence on the burden and associated factors of maternal undernutrition in Somalia. This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of undernutrition among pregnan

This review covers the organisation of veterinary public health (VPH) activities in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, with reference to zoonoses and hazards to man from foods of animal origin. A study of the region shows that no separate VPH units exist within the national Veterinary Services. Although these Services are gradually being upgraded and strengthened, most of their resources are spent in controlling serious contagious animal diseases such as foot and mouth disease, rinderpest and Newcastle disease. Rabies, present in almost every country of the region, is a zoonosis wh

The aim of this study was to determine if (1) participation in Home-Delivered Meals (HDM) results in improved dietary patterns and nutrient intake, lower food insecurity, and reduced loss of weight; (2) subgroups of older persons are more likely to benefit; and (3) nutritional indicators of impact other than nutrient intake may be useful. The design used was quasi-experimental, with longitudinal assessment of individuals on HDM at baseline (before receipt of services), 6, and 12 months, and comparison to non-randomized group receiving other services. Outcomes included measured weight and heigh

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency is associated with poor health outcomes related to reproduction, growth, vision, and immunity. Biofortification of staple crops is a novel strategy for combating vitamin A deficiency in high-risk populations where staple food intakes are high. African populations are proposed beneficiaries of maize (Zea mays) biofortified with provitamin A carotenoids, often called "orange maize" because of its distinctive deep yellow-orange kernels. The color facilitates ready recognition but presents a cultural challenge to maize-consuming populations, including those in much

The concern over obesity today has evolved beyond an issue of personal vanity to a serious national health issue affecting millions of Americans. Obesity in children is especially alarming. Overweight children and adolescents are at risk for health problems throughout their lives. While under-nutrition or diet insufficiencies were once major obstacles in the development of healthy infants and children, the epidemic of childhood obesity marks the start of the 21st century with equally menacing health consequences. Childhood obesity creates an increased burden of disease on our economy with incr

BACKGROUND: Sufficient healthcare services utilization among the Syrian refugee population is one of the most important human rights. Vulnerable populations, such as refugees, are often deprived of sufficient access to healthcare services. Even when healthcare services are accessible, refugees vary in their level of utilization of these services and their health-seeking behavior.
PURPOSE: This study aims to examine the status and indicators of healthcare service access and utilization among adult Syrian refugees with non-communicable diseases residing in two refugee camps.
METHODS: The cross
