Prevalence and risk factors of foodborne disease among Iranian pilgrims during the Arbaeen mass gathering in Karbala, Iraq.

Foodborne diseases are a significant public health concern during mass gatherings, including the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Karbala, Iraq. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors for foodborne disease among Iranian pilgrims attending the Arbaeen ceremony. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,030 pilgrims via structured questionnaires. The questionnaire included sections on demographic information, potential risk factors, KAP scores (knowledge, attitudes, and practices) related to food safety, and symptoms and severity of foodborne disease. Logistic regre

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Foodborne Disease Healthcare-Seeking Behavior and Diagnoses at a Large Academic Medical System.

The objective of this study was to examine changes in healthcare-seeking behaviors and diagnostic practices around foodborne illness during the COVID-19 pandemic in a large university-based health system. A retrospective cohort study of individuals diagnosed with pathogens commonly transmitted through food between 2015 and 2020 was undertaken using electronic medical record data. Regression models were used to compare measured incidence rates of various foodborne pathogens as well as associated healthcare-seeking behaviors during the pandemic year of 2020 to previous years. Incidence of campyl

Estimates of the 2015 global and regional disease burden from four foodborne metals - arsenic, cadmium, lead and methylmercury.

The impact of foodborne metals on the burden of disease has been largely overlooked, in comparison to the attention on acute diseases associated with infectious foodborne agents. Four articles in this special section describe in detail the burden of disease from foodborne lead, methylmercury, arsenic, and cadmium. Ingested lead and methylmercury are causally associated with lifelong intellectual disability. Long term ingestion of arsenic is causally associated with an increased risk of cancer. Long term ingestion of cadmium is causally associated with an increased risk of late stage chronic ki

WHO estimates of the global, regional, and national disease burden of nine foodborne chemicals, 2000-21: an updated data synthesis.

BACKGROUND: We updated WHO estimates of the global, regional, and national foodborne disease burden caused by chemical hazards. We estimated incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of aflatoxins B1 and M1, inorganic arsenic, lead, methylmercury, cadmium, dioxin, peanut allergy, and cassava cyanide for 2000-21. METHODS: We used data from systematic reviews, established dose-response relationships, the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, and, where applicable, a structured expert judgment study. We used disease-specific models and a hierarchical meta-regression model w

Foodborne Disease Outbreak Associated with Consumption of Asaana; a Local Maize Beverage in Ningo-Prampram, Ghana: A Case-Control Study.

On 14 April 2025, a cluster of acute illness was reported among students in Ningo-Prampram Municipality, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. We investigated the outbreak to determine its magnitude, identify the source, and implement control measures. We conducted an unmatched 1:2 case-control study. A case was defined as any person in Olowe who developed at least one of the following symptoms on 14 April 2025: abdominal pain, dizziness, diarrhoea, nausea, fever, headache, or profuse sweating. Food and beverage exposures were compared using crude odds ratios, 95% confidence intervals, and Fisher's exa

Comparison of 3-day and 7-day recall periods for food consumption reference values in foodborne disease outbreak investigations.

Investigations into an outbreak of foodborne disease attempt to identify the source of illness as quickly as possible. Population-based reference values for food consumption can assist in investigation by providing comparison data for hypothesis generation and also strengthening the evidence associated with a food product through hypothesis testing. In 2014-2015 a national phone survey was conducted in Canada to collect data on food consumption patterns using a 3- or 7-day recall period. The resulting food consumption values over the two recall periods were compared. The majority of food produ

[The infectious disease epidemiology research network--a bridge between science and public health service. The example of the network for foodborne infections].

In order to respond to emerging food borne diseases, a new data-driven approach guided by epidemiologic and microbiologic data has been developed in Germany. An interdisciplinary network of scientists at the national, regional and local levels conducted surveillance and epidemiologic research of foodborne pathogens (Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Salmonella and Campylobacter). The objectives of the network include (1) determining incidence and distribution of STEC and Salmonella, (2) assessing the importance of typing systems for Campylobacter, (3) determining risk factors for

Quinolone nonsusceptibility among enteric pathogens isolated from international travelers - Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) and National Antimicrobial Monitoring System (NARMS), 10 United States sites, 2004 - 2014.

Gastrointestinal illnesses are the most frequently diagnosed conditions among returning U.S. travelers. Although most episodes of travelers' diarrhea do not require antibiotic therapy, fluoroquinolones (a type of quinolone antibiotic) are recommended for treatment of moderate and severe travelers' diarrhea as well as many other types of severe infection. To assess associations between quinolone susceptibility and international travel, we linked data about isolate susceptibility in NARMS to cases of enteric infections reported to FoodNet. We categorized isolates as quinolone-nonsusceptible (QNS

Reported Incidence of Infections Caused by Pathogens Transmitted Commonly Through Food: Impact of Increased Use of Culture-Independent Diagnostic Tests - Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, 1996-2023.

Reducing foodborne disease incidence is a public health priority. This report summarizes preliminary 2023 Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) data and highlights efforts to increase the representativeness of FoodNet. During 2023, incidences of domestically acquired campylobacteriosis, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection, yersiniosis, vibriosis, and cyclosporiasis increased, whereas those of listeriosis, salmonellosis, and shigellosis remained stable compared with incidences during 2016-2018, the baseline used for tracking progress towards federal disease reduc

Intensive investigation of bacterial foodborne disease outbreaks: proposed guidelines and tools for the collection of dose-response data by local health departments.

Local health departments that investigate foodborne disease outbreaks do not have adequate guidelines for collecting data that could be used to estimate dose-response relationships, a key component of hazard characterization in quantitative microbial risk assessment. To meet this need, criteria and a questionnaire template for the collection of appropriate dose-response data in the context of outbreaks were developed and applied in the investigation of a point-source outbreak linked to Salmonella serotype Enteritidis in a salmon entrée in February 2000. In this outbreak, the attack rate and ri

A Foodborne Disease Outbreak Caused by Salmonella enterica Serovar Braenderup (ST311) - Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, China, July 2025.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen, and eggs are established vehicles for common serotypes such as Enteritidis. However, rare serotypes like Braenderup are infrequently identified in outbreaks, partly due to limited routine surveillance and the low resolution of conventional typing methods. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This report documents a point-source outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup ST311 involving 130 cases (attack rate 19.2%, median incubation 17 hours). Sandwich consumption was strongly associated [corrected odds ratio=1,626.7 (Haldane

Is a syndromic approach well suited to foodborne disease surveillance? Implication for salmonellosis surveillance and prevention in France from a "One Health" perspective.

In response to the increasing emergence of zoonotic pathogens, flexible, multisectoral surveillance systems capable of generating alerts thanks to rapid, nonspecific detection, are crucial before pathogens reach human populations. Syndromic surveillance has proven to be a breakthrough for near real-time disease surveillance in the public health sector. It relies on existing nonspecific data, usually collected for other purposes. Salmonella is one of the leading causes of foodborne illness. Data from animal and human sectors can be used to help monitor it across the food chain and thus quickly

Outbreak of Foodborne Botulism in an Immigrant Community: Overcoming Delayed Disease Recognition, Ambiguous Epidemiologic Links, and Cultural Barriers to Identify the Cause.

We describe a botulism outbreak involving 4 Middle Eastern men complicated by delayed diagnosis, ambiguous epidemiologic links among patients, and illness onset dates inconsistent with a point-source exposure. Homemade turshi, a fermented vegetable dish, was the likely cause. Patients ate turshi at 2 locations on different days over 1 month.

World Health Organization Estimates of the Relative Contributions of Food to the Burden of Disease Due to Selected Foodborne Hazards: A Structured Expert Elicitation.

BACKGROUND: The Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) was established in 2007 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to estimate the global burden of foodborne diseases (FBDs). This estimation is complicated because most of the hazards causing FBD are not transmitted solely by food; most have several potential exposure routes consisting of transmission from animals, by humans, and via environmental routes including water. This paper describes an expert elicitation study conducted by the FERG Source Attribution Task Force to estimate the relative contribution of food to t

Outbreaks where food workers have been implicated in the spread of foodborne disease. Part 4. Infective doses and pathogen carriage.

In this article, the fourth in a series reviewing the role of food workers in foodborne outbreaks, background information on the presence of enteric pathogens in the community, the numbers of organisms required to initiate an infection, and the length of carriage are presented. Although workers have been implicated in outbreaks, they were not always aware of their infections, either because they were in the prodromic phase before symptoms began or because they were asymptomatic carriers. Pathogens of fecal, nose or throat, and skin origin are most likely to be transmitted by the hands, highlig
