Effects of active forest management on host-seeking tick density and infection prevalence: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hard-bodied ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) pose a major public health threat, transmitting multiple pathogens among humans and wildlife worldwide. Research has investigated how anthropogenic land use change impacts tick density and infection prevalence in temperate forests, including the effects of active forest management practices like prescribed burning, invasive vegetation removal and timber harvesting. However, studies' results are inconsistent and seemingly context-dependent, making it difficult for land managers, landowners and policy makers to identify whether management addresses the public

Beneath the Bark: Molecular Determinants of Adaptation and Infection in Bacterial Pathogens of Woody Hosts.

Bacterial pathogens of woody plants represent a pervasive yet underexplored threat to global agriculture and forestry, causing devastating diseases in fruit trees, shrubs, forest trees and ornamental species. Unlike pathogens of herbaceous plants, the molecular strategies enabling bacteria to colonise and damage woody tissues remain poorly understood, owing to the experimental challenges associated with woody host systems and the distinctive biology of these plants. Moreover, persistence within long-lived woody tissues requires prolonged modulation of host immune signalling, enabling pathogens

Hydrology Predominates Over Harvest History and Landscape Variation to Control Water Quality and Disinfection Byproduct Formation Potentials in Forested Pacific Coast Watersheds.

Despite the global importance of forested watersheds as sources of drinking water, few studies have examined the effects of forestry on drinking water treatability. Relatively little is known about how the interaction between landscape variation and flow impacts source water quality and what this interaction means for drinking water treatability. To address this knowledge gap, we examined variability in sediments, dissolved organic matter, and disinfection byproduct formation potentials (DBP-FPs) across a range of flow conditions in four small watersheds with contrasting forest harvest histori

Epidemiology of tick-borne encephalitis in China, 2007- 2018.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is endemic to Europe and some Asian countries and is prevalent in northeast China. We analyzed the epidemiology of TBE in China from 2007 to 2018. A total of 3,364 TBE cases were reported in mainland China from 2007 to 2018, for an annual incidence of 0.09 to 0.44/100,000. Among the TBE cases, 89.92% were reported in forest areas (41.94% in DaXingAnLing, 8.70% in XiaoXingAnLing, and 39.21% in ChangBaiShan) in northeast China. The TBE cases were primarily male with a proportion of 67.15% (2,259/3,364 cases) and in 40-49-year age group with a proportion of 31.89% (1

Seroprevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in occupationally exposed persons in the Belgrade area, Serbia.

Lyme disease (LD) is a natural focal zoonotic disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, which is mainly transmitted through infected Ixodes ricinus tick bites. The presence and abundance of ticks in various habitats, the infectivity rate, as well as prolonged human exposure to ticks are factors that may affect the infection risk as well as the incidence of LD. In recent years, 20% to 25% of ticks infected with different borrelial species, as well as about 5,300 citizens with LD, have been registered in the Belgrade area. Many of the patients reported tick bites in city's grassy areas. The aim of

Serological survey of Toscana virus infections in a high-risk population in Italy.

Toscana virus is the most important agent responsible for meningitis in central Italy. We report a serosurveillance study, using an immunoenzymatic assay, of 360 serum samples harvested from a high-risk population occupationally exposed to Toscana virus in two regions of Italy, Tuscany and Piedmont. The results indicates a seroprevalence of Toscana virus of 77.2% in the forestry workers, particularly in the Tuscany region. This fact is strictly correlated with the ecological niches specific for the survival of Toscana virus arthropod vector.

Preliminary studies on the relationship between Ixodes ricinus activity and tick-borne infection among occupationally-exposed inhabitants of eastern Poland.

Relative density (activity) of the tick Ixodes ricinus was determined in five districts of the Lublin region (eastern Poland) by vegetation flagging. Tick activity values were compared to the determined by ELISA tests seroprevalence to tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and Borrelia burgdorferi in forestry workers and farmers from the same areas. A significant correlation between tick activity and seroprevalence to both TBEV and B. burgdorferi antigen was found in farmers and in the total examined population.

Disturbance Mosaics Shape Multiple Pollinator Taxa Across Spatial and Temporal Scales in Fire-Managed Forests.

Because forests are critical to a large fraction of global pollinator diversity, there is great interest in better understanding how changes in forest cover, structure, and composition affect these essential organisms. Fire is one of the key drivers of such changes worldwide, yet the effects of variation in fire regimes on pollinator communities remain poorly understood. We tested how fire history, roads, and tree composition jointly influence the richness, abundance, assemblage composition, and trait structure of bees, butterflies, and hover flies in a fire-managed forest landscape in the sou

Rubber intercropping with arboreal and herbaceous species alleviated the global warming potential through the reduction of soil greenhouse gas emissions.

Agroforestry systems are known to enhance soil health and climate resilience, but their impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rubber-based agroforestry systems across diverse configurations is not fully understood. Here, six representative rubber-based agroforestry systems (encompassing rubber trees intercropped with arboreal, shrub, and herbaceous species) were selected based on a preliminary investigation, including Hevea brasiliensis intercropping with Alpinia oxyphylla (AOM), Alpinia katsumadai (AKH), Coffea arabica (CAA), Theobroma cacao (TCA), Cinnamomum cassia (CCA), and Pandanus

Bark and Ambrosia Beetle (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Diversity Found in Agricultural and Fragmented Forests in Piracicaba-SP, Brazil.

Land use changes and forest fragmentation result in biodiversity loss and displacement, with insects among the most affected groups. Among these, bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) occupy a prominent position due to their close ties to food resources, i.e., trees, and importance as primary decomposers in forest ecosystems. Therefore, our study aimed to document scolytine biodiversity associated with landscape components that vary based on their physical or botanical composition. Bark beetle diversity was sampled monthly for 12 mo in an Atlantic forest remnant and five adjacent vegetation

Effects of Eucalyptus plantations on detritus, decomposers, and detritivores in streams.

Vast areas of the Iberian Peninsula are covered by monocultures of the exotic tree Eucalyptus globulus. Given that (1) leaf litter produced in the riparian areas is the main energy source for small streams, and (2) trees differ in their nutrient content, chemical defenses, and physical attributes, eucalypt plantations have the potential to affect the biology of streams. Research teams from the University of Coimbra and the University of the Basque Country have been addressing the potential effects of eucalypt plantations at several levels of study. Here we review the main conclusions of these
