Primary and old-growth forests are globally valued for their biodiversity, ecosystem services, and cultural significance. The EU biodiversity strategy and EU forest strategy for 2030 require strict protection of remaining primary and old-growth forests, yet they cover only about 3% of EU forest area and remain highly threatened. The European Commission's guidelines define old-growth forests using three main indicators-native tree species, deadwood, and large/old trees-supported by four complementary indicators. Implementing these indicators for boreal and hemiboreal old-growth forests in Europ

Woody debris decomposition is a key process in forest ecosystem material cycles, with invertebrate communities playing a vital role. Distinct physicochemical properties of woody debris types lead to varying effects on these communities. Taking woody debris in Saihanba's Larix principis-rupprechtii plantations, Betula platyphylla natural secondary forests, and larch-birch mixed forests (northern China) as objects, we collected woody debris-inhabiting invertebrates via hand-sorting. We studied how tree species (larch/birch), forest types (pure/mixed), and decay stages (I-V) collectively regulate

Progressive intensification of drought regimes worldwide threatens wood decomposition - a critical biogeochemical process in forest carbon cycling. However, the interactions between microbial strategies, wood traits and microclimate in regulating wood decomposition remain poorly understood under drought conditions. In a throughfall exclusion experiment (control 35% and 70% rainfall reduction) across 12 tree species, we found that drought-induced reductions in wood CO2 efflux rates were primarily driven by wood traits (density and carbon reduction) and shifts in fungal K/r-strategies. In Europe, Puumala virus (PUUV) transmitted by the bank vole (Myodes glareolus) is the causative agent of nephropathia epidemica (NE), a mild form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. In France, very little is known about the spatial and temporal variability of the virus circulating within bank vole populations. The present study involved monitoring of bank vole population dynamics and PUUV microdiversity over a ten-year period (2000-2009) in two forests of the Ardennes region: Elan and Croix-Scaille. Ardennes region is characterised by different environmental conditions associated with

Projected changes in temperature and drought regime are likely to reduce carbon (C) storage in forests, thereby amplifying rates of climate change. While such reductions are often presumed to be greatest in semi-arid forests that experience widespread tree mortality, the consequences of drought may also be important in temperate mesic forests of Eastern North America (ENA) if tree growth is significantly curtailed by drought. Investigations of the environmental conditions that determine drought sensitivity are critically needed to accurately predict ecosystem feedbacks to climate change. We ma

Recent large and severe outbreaks of native bark beetles have raised concern among the general public and land managers about potential for amplified fire activity in western North America. To date, the majority of studies examining bark beetle outbreaks and subsequent fire severity in the U.S. Rocky Mountains have focused on outbreaks of mountain pine beetle (MPB; Dendroctonus ponderosae) in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests, but few studies, particularly field studies, have addressed the effects of the severity of spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby) infestation on subsequent

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a serious neurodegenerative disorder and its cause remains largely elusive. In past years, genome-wide association (GWA) studies have provided an effective means for AD research. However, the univariate method that is commonly used in GWA studies cannot effectively detect the biological mechanisms associated with this disease. In this study, we propose a new strategy for the GWA analysis of AD that combines random forests with enrichment analysis. First, backward feature selection using random forests was performed on a GWA dataset of AD patients carrying the apolip

Dryland forests are among the most threatened forest types worldwide, making their accurate detection essential for monitoring, conservation, and land-use planning. However, their open and discontinuous structure challenges remote sensing, as individual pixels often contain mixed land cover components. This study evaluates the performance of pixel-based and object-based classification methods for detecting open xeric forests using Sentinel-2 imagery. Four sites in the Monte region (Mendoza, Argentina), representing contrasting forest structures, were analyzed using the Random Forest classifica

Storm Gudrun represents one of the most significant meteorological events in recent Swedish history, causing widespread forest destruction in southern Sweden. Now, 20 years after the storm, it is time to reflect on its impact on the forest sciences. We highlight key research themes that emerged in response to the storm, emphasising the critical role of research and monitoring infrastructure in facilitating the generation of valuable insights. We identified 18 articles focusing on storm Gudrun within forest-related research fields, which were, in turn, cited by over 600 subsequent studies. A ci

The current body of literature points monoterpenes as one of the determinant factors of the interaction between forests and human health. The present study aims at analyzing the monoterpene absorption by humans during a 2 -hs forest exposure in a Mediterranean holm oak forest focusing on the four most abundant monoterpene compounds: alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, alpha-phellandrene and limonene. Participants' blood samples were collected before and after exposure to forest or urban environment (control). We conducted air and blood sampling using cartridges and head space method and determined the

OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we aimed to clarify the psychological effects of shinrin-yoku (taking in the atmosphere of the forest) by conducting field experiments.
METHODS: The experiments were conducted in 19 forested and urban areas in Japan during the 2007-2010 period. Twelve male students participated at each of the 19 areas (a total of 228 persons). Subjective ratings of "comfortable-uncomfortable", "soothing-stimulating", and "natural-artificial" feelings were conducted after each of the participants had viewed the scenery for 15 min in the forested and urban areas. A postviewing

INTRODUCTION: Nature-based interventions aimed at promoting health, enhancing well-being and supporting medical treatment have long been a focus of public health research. In particular, forest therapy and forest bathing are well established in Asia as evidence-informed approaches to stress reduction. In Europe, research on forest therapy is expanding although the field remains comparatively young. Existing studies have mainly focused on the short-term effects of single forest visits while evidence on multiweek interventions and potential medium-term to long-term effects remains limited. The p

BACKGROUND: Malaria incidence in the Greater Mekong Subregion has been on the decline, and most remaining malaria risk in the region is concentrated among hard-to-reach populations, especially those with exposure to forested areas. New vector control tools focused on outdoor protection in forest settings are needed for these populations.
METHODS: The delivery of a 'forest pack' containing a volatile pyrethroid spatial repellent (VPSR), a topical repellent, and pyrethroid treatment of clothing was evaluated in an operational study in Cambodia. Costs were collected using micro-costing approache

BACKGROUND: Rapid elimination of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Cambodia is a goal with both national and international significance. Transmission of malaria in Cambodia is limited to forest environments, and the main population at risk consists of forest-goers who rely on forest products for income or sustenance. The ideal interventions to eliminate malaria from this population are unknown.
METHODS: In two forested regions of Cambodia, forest-goers were trained to become forest malaria workers (FMWs). In one region, FMWs performed mass screening and treatment, focal screening and treatment

Mangrove forest rehabilitation should begin much sooner than at the point of catastrophic loss. We describe the need for "mangrove forest heart attack prevention", and how that might be accomplished in a general sense by embedding plot and remote sensing monitoring within coastal management plans. The major cause of mangrove stress at many sites globally is often linked to reduced tidal flows and exchanges. Blocked water flows can reduce flushing not only from the seaward side, but also result in higher salinity and reduced sediments when flows are blocked landward. Long-term degradation of fu

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium knowlesi is a zoonotic pathogen, transmitted among macaques and to humans by anopheline mosquitoes. Information on P. knowlesi malaria is lacking in most regions so the first step to understand the geographical distribution of disease risk is to define the distributions of the reservoir and vector species.
METHODS: We used macaque and mosquito species presence data, background data that captured sampling bias in the presence data, a boosted regression tree model and environmental datasets, including annual data for land classes, to predict the distributions of each vect

Group size in ungulates is believed to reflect a balance between antipredator strategies and competition for resources. We studied chital (Axis axis) group sizes across habitat types representing variation in food availability and predator cover, along with predator density and chital density, within moist deciduous forests of Kanha National Park, India. Habitat-specific chital density was estimated using distance sampling followed by density surface modeling, while tiger and leopard densities (major predators of chital) were derived from camera-trap-based spatially explicit capture-recapture
