Pervasive gaps in sensory information are completed in perception. Interestingly, humans are unaware of that perceptual completion in cases of proximal gaps, which are caused by properties of their own sensory system, and report high confidence for the inferred information in those gaps. Here, we investigated whether such overconfidence is also observed in perceptual completion of visual information in distal gaps (i.e., those caused by the properties of the stimulus). In three experiments, we asked participants to perform a perceptual (type 1) task and report their confidence (type 2 task) us

How is the perceptual representation of a spatially extended object translated into a discrete saccade vector? A wealth of evidence suggests that the object center of area (COA) is computed as a default index. However, saccades are also sensitive to the location of task-relevant information, which does not always appear at the COA. In addition, task-relevant object regions often correspond to discrete object parts. Here, we manipulated part-structure cues and participant goals to examine their potential interaction in controlling within-object landing position. In Experiment 1, participants ex

In previous psychophysical work we found that luminance contrast is integrated over retinal area subject to contrast gain control. If different mechanisms perform this operation for a range of superimposed retinal regions of different sizes, this could provide the basis for size-coding. To test this idea we included two novel features in a standard adaptation paradigm to discount more pedestrian accounts of repulsive size-aftereffects. First, we used spatially jittering luminance-contrast adaptors to avoid simple contour displacement aftereffects. Second, we decoupled adaptor and target spatia

Three studies examined young infants' ability to distinguish between expected and unexpected motion of objects based on their shape. Using a preferential-looking paradigm, 8- and 12-month-old infants' looking time towards expected and unexpected motion displays of familiar, everyday objects (e.g., balls and cubes) was examined. Experiment 1 demonstrated that two factors drive infants' preferential fixations of object motion displays. Both 8- and 12-month-olds displayed a tendency to look at rotating information over non-rotating, stationary visual information. In contrast, only 12-month-olds s

The focus of expansion (FoE) specifies the heading direction of an observer during self-motion, and experiments show that humans can accurately perceive their heading from optic flow. However, when the environment contains an independently moving object, heading judgments may be biased. When objects approach the observer in depth, the heading bias may be due to discrepant optic flow within the contours of the object that radiates from a secondary FoE (object-based discrepancy) or by motion contrast at the borders of the object (border-based discrepancy). In Experiments 1 and 2, we manipulated

Contour integration (CI) refers to the process that represents spatially separated elements as a unified edge or closed shape. Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, inappropriate affect, and social withdrawal. Persons with schizophrenia are impaired at CI, but the specific mechanisms underlying the deficit are still not clear. Here, we explored the hypothesis that poor patient performance owes to reduced feedback or impaired longer-range lateral connectivity within early visual cortex--functionally similar to

This study was concerned with what stimulus information observers use to judge the shape of simple objects. We used a string of four Gabor patches to define a contour. A fifth, center patch served as a test pattern. The observers' task was to judge the location of the test pattern relative to the contour. The contour was either a straight line, or an arc with positive or negative curvature (the radius of curvature was either 2 or 6 deg). We asked whether phase shifts in the inner or outer pairs of patches distributed along the contour influence the perceived shape. That is, we measured the pha

Form and motion coherence was tested in children with dyspraxia and matched controls to assess their global spatial and global motion processing abilities. Thresholds for detecting form coherence patterns were significantly higher in the dyspraxic group than in the control group. No corresponding difference was found on the motion coherence task. We tested eight children with dyspraxic disorder (mean age 8.2 years) and 50 verbal-mental-age matched controls (mean age 8.4 years) to test for a neural basis to the perceptual abnormalities observed in dyspraxia. The results provide evidence that ch

This research concerned the use of mental rotation in recognizing rotated objects. Instead of the classic Shepard's paradigm in which subjects were still while observing rotated objects, here subjects had to move (or imagine moving) around stationary three-dimensional objects put in the middle of the trajectory. Thus, depending on the viewing positions, such objects were seen under six different perspectives (from 30 degrees to 180 degrees). The latter task has been thought to be closer to everyday life in which we obtain information regarding objects from their spatial properties. The results

It has previously been shown that when a moving and a stationary display are superimposed, illusory self-rotation (circular vection) is induced only when the moving display appears as the background. Three experiments are reported on the extent to which illusory forward self-motion (forward vection) induced by a looming display is inhibited by a superimposed stationary display as a function of the size and location of the stationary display and of the depth between the stationary and looming displays. Results showed that forward vection was controlled by the display that was perceived as the b

Visual information reaches the cortex via multiple pathways, most notably the magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) streams. How their inputs are integrated remains unclear. We previously documented the case of Davida, a young woman who perceives high-contrast, sharply bounded 2D shapes as rotated or mirror-reversed, while he perception normalizes when stimuli are blurred, low in contrast, or brief. Here, we first review previous findings and propose that her disorder may reflect abnormally strong P-on-M inhibition. We then present three studies supporting this account: two demonstrate abnor

Images of an object can vary considerably due to changes in illumination direction and material. Despite this, the human visual system often recovers stable estimates of shape, suggesting the presence of invariant image structure. Prior research shows that perceived shape can be affected by the direction of illumination, but the general conditions that lead to failures of shape constancy remain unknown. Here, we show that certain shape-illumination configurations can generically cause failures of shape constancy. Aligning the illuminant with anisotropic shape features' axis of elongation (e.g.

Humans and neural networks use shape and texture information differently. While humans weigh shape heavily in their ultimate classification decision, neural networks are more biased towards texture cues. Many tests of shape vs. texture bias have focused on shape recognition from an object's external contour. However, shape information is also conveyed through internal contours, shading, and attached shadows, especially when an object is viewed from noncanonical perspectives. Using models from ShapeNet, we created datasets of 120,000 texture-substituted images of objects from many viewpoints wi

PURPOSE: Patients with low vision are generally recommended to use the same fonts as individuals with normal vision. However, we are yet to fully understand whether stroke width and serifs (small ornamentations at stroke endings) can increase readability. This study's purpose was to characterize the interaction between two factors (end-of-stroke and stroke width) in a well-defined and homogenous group of patients with low vision.
METHODS: Font legibility was assessed by measuring word identification performance of 19 patients with low vision (autosomal dominant optic atrophy [ADOA] with a bes

Neuroimaging evidence suggests that areas of the higher-order visual cortex, including the lateral occipital complex (LOC), are engaged in the perception of illusory contours; however, these findings remain unsubstantiated by human lesion data. Therefore, we assessed the presentation time necessary to perceive two types of illusory contours formed by Kanizsa figures or aligned line ends in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, we used 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) to measure regional cerebral glucose metabolism in PD patients. Although there were

We summarize five studies of our large-scale research program, in which we examined aspects of contour-based object identification and segmentation, and we report on the stimuli we used, the norms and data we collected, and the software tools we developed. The stimuli were outlines derived from the standard set of line drawings of everyday objects by Snodgrass and Vanderwart (1980). We used contour curvature as a major variable in all the studies. The total number of 1,500 participants produced very solid, normative identification rates of silhouettes and contours, straight-line versions, and

We report a 63-year-old right-handed man with the associative visual agnosia and bilateral altitudinal hemianopia. Neurological examination revealed fair visual acuity and normal ocular movement. Other cranial-nerve, motor, sensory, and autonomic functions were normal. The brain MRI showed multiple infarction involving the right fusiform and lingual gyri extending to the adjacent white matter of the occipito-temporal lobes and posterior part of the parahippocampus, the left fusiform and lingual gyri, and multiple lacunae in bilateral basal ganglia. Cerebral angiography demonstrated occlusion a

Anurans have independent systems for detecting moving stimuli and stationary opaque objects. We have discovered that leopard frogs will also orient to, and spontaneously and accurately jump through, circular apertures in overhead transparent covers. When given a choice between one large aperture of 3.8 cm diameter, and three apertures of smaller but equal diameter (2.5 cm diameter, 1.9 cm diameter, or 1.3 cm diameter) they choose the larger diameter aperture at a frequency (64, 87 and 97%, respectively) that is statistically greater than chance. In only 1 of 255 attempts was there a jump to th

Three experiments were conducted to explore the role of colour and other surface properties in object recognition. The effects of manipulating the availability of surface-based information on object naming in a patient with visual form agnosia and in two age-matched control subjects were examined in experiment 1. The objects were presented under seven different viewing conditions ranging from a full view of the actual objects to line drawings of those same objects. The presence of colour and other surface properties aided the recognition of natural objects such as fruits and vegetables in both
