Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association1994eng
A 9-week-old Thoroughbred x Holsteiner colt was referred for evaluation and treatment of lameness of the right hind limb. Radiography of the stifle revealed multiple bony fragments within the lateral portion of the femorotibial joint and a radiolucency of the distolateral portion of the femur in the area of the extensor fossa, which were consistent with avulsion of the origin of the extensor digitorum longus muscle. Arthroscopy of the lateral portion of the femorotibial joint revealed exposed subchondral bone in the area of the extensor fossa, and the origin of the extensor digitorum longus mu

Three cases of an avulsion fracture of the base of the index metacarpal by the tendon of Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus are reported. There are two previous reports of this injury which were both treated operatively. These cases were treated conservatively with satisfactory results. The relevant anatomy, mechanism of injury and incidence are discussed.

An extremely rare isolated avulsion fracture of the lesser tuberosity, not complicated with other proximal humeral fractures or posterior shoulder dislocations, occurred in a 12-year-old girl. The avulsion fracture of the upper part of the lesser tuberosity appears to have been caused by hyperextension and hyperexternal rotation of the shoulder. In this position, the coracohumeral ligament, superior glenohumeral ligament, and subscapularis tendon could have pulled out the upper part of the lesser tuberosity. She gained full recovery of left shoulder function after three months of conservative

OBJECTIVE: Pelvic avulsion fractures are common injuries among adolescent athletes and are often evaluated with imaging modalities involving radiation to the pelvis. Ultrasound is a portable, accessible, inexpensive, radiation-free alternative, but its accuracy for diagnosing pelvic avulsions has not been well established. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound detecting pelvic avulsion fractures in adolescents, including among clinicians without prior ultrasound training and radiologists.
METHODS: Four clinicians with limited or no ultrasound experienc

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Occipital condylar avulsion fractures are considered potentially unstable, associated with craniocervical dissociation spectrum injuries, and thought to carry a relatively high mortality rate based on the current literature. The purpose of this study was to identify patient with acute, occipital condylar avulsion fractures and evaluate for the incidence of concomitant cervical osteoligamentous trauma and craniocervical dissociation spectrum injury on cervical spine CT and MRI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who suffered an inferomedial occipital condylar avulsion frac

Avulsion fractures of the metacarpophalangeal joints are uncommon and there are few reports on their outcome after conservative treatment. We treated seven such patients with fracture fragment sizes between 10% and 25% of the width of the articular surface on the radiograph by early active mobilisation in neighbour strapping. The outcome of treatment was assessed at a mean follow-up of 57 (range 8-94) months. The mean visual analogue pain score was 0.6 (range 0-2) and the mean visual analogue function score was 9 out of 10 (range 6-10). The mean DASH score was 3.1 (range 0-12.5). All but one p

Ten patients, presenting with a 10 degrees to 25 degrees deficit of knee extension after an avulsion fracture of the anterior tibial spine, were arthroscopically treated with debridement and abrasion of the anterior spine. Notchplasty was also performed in five cases where there was a more severe deficit of extension. At follow-up (mean: 39.4 months) eight patients had recovered the full articular range of motion of the knee whereas two had a slight residual deficit of extension of between 3 degrees and 5 degrees. In no case was ligament stability compromised as compared with preoperative asse

The partial articular surface tendon avulsion (PASTA) is a common lesion that involves the supraspinatus tendon in most cases. We present an arthroscopic fixation technique for a previously undescribed lesion that may be considered a variant of the PASTA. The lesion involves a partial avulsion of the greater tuberosity with an intact deep insertion of the supraspinatus tendon into the fractured bone fragment and an intact superficial insertion of the supraspinatus into the unavulsed lateral aspect of the greater tuberosity: a "bony PASTA" lesion. The surgical technique involves the use of a 70

INTRODUCTION: Occipital condyle fractures (OCFs) are rare injuries presenting with neurologic sequelae that may be debilitating or even fatal. Treatment options for unstable OCFs include fusion or halo placement. Fusion of the occipitocervical junction is associated with a significant loss of motion.
CASE REPORT: This study presents a case of bilateral occipital condylar fractures with C1-C2 rotatory subluxation treated with temporary fusionless occipitocervical fixation.
CONCLUSION: This is a rare case of bilateral OCFs with atlantoaxial instability that underwent fusionless instrumentation

PURPOSE: Avulsion fractures of the foot after supination trauma are frequently encountered at the emergency department. Despite their high incidence, the prognosis of these fractures remains largely unknown. Moreover, evidence-based treatment recommendations are lacking and treatment decisions are primarily guided by expert-opinion. Our purpose is to provide an overview of the prognosis for these fractures.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed using the Medline and Embase databases to search for studies that reported on clinical outcome ≥ 6 months after an avulsion fracture of the foot

PURPOSE: The ideal surgical management for tibial eminence avulsion fractures remains controversial with varying approach, methods of fixation and post-operative regimes reported throughout literature. The current systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare between the different approaches, methods of fixation and post-operative regimes for tibial eminence fractures.
METHODS: The systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. A search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE and CINAHL databases. The keywords used were "anterior cruciate ligament", "tibial spine" or "tibia

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal avulsion fractures (CAvFs) at the Achilles tendon insertion are among the more challenging fractures to treat. Although rare, they often require reoperation. The optimal treatment, including nonsurgical procedures and better implants for surgical procedures in the treatment of CAvFs, remains to be established. Therefore, our study aimed to (1) perform a descriptive evaluation of CAvFs, including cases managed nonsurgically, and (2) assess surgical procedures, including the incidence of complications and reoperation for surgically treated CAvFs.
METHODS: In this multicent

AIMS: This study aimed to establish the optimal fixation methods for calcaneal tuberosity avulsion fractures with different fragment thicknesses in a porcine model.
METHODS: A total of 36 porcine calcanea were sawed to create simple avulsion fractures with three different fragment thicknesses (5, 10, and 15 mm). They were randomly fixed with either two suture anchors or one headless screw. Load-to-failure and cyclic loading tension tests were performed for the biomechanical analysis.
RESULTS: This biomechanical study predicts that headless screw fixation is a better option if fragment thickn

BACKGROUND: In patients with multiligament knee injuries, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are often reconstructed. Recent studies have shown good results when the ACL tibial avulsions are repaired. The advantages of ACL tibial avulsion repair are the preservation of the native anatomy, reduction in donor site morbidity, and lower risk of tunnel convergence.
INDICATIONS & TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: We show 2 techniques for repairing ACL tibial avulsion fractures. The first case describes the use of hybrid fixation (screw and suture), with staged repair and reconstruction in a patient with h

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether delay in the diagnosis of pelvic avulsion fractures in young athletes leads to prolonged treatment and prolonged return toward sport activities, whether fractures at certain locations are associated with a greater risk of diagnostic delay, and what reasons may exist for delay in diagnosis.
DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of young patients who presented with pelvic region avulsion fracture to a community-based sports medicine clinic over a 19-year period.
SETTING: Private practice, primary care sports medicine clinic.
PATIENTS: Patients younger than 20 years

An avulsion fracture of the tibial tubercle is an uncommon injury, comprising less than 1% of all physeal injuries. The occurrence of such injuries bilaterally is even rarer. We report a case of bilateral atraumatic tibial tubercle avulsion fractures and its presentation, mechanism of injury, surgical management, post-operative rehabilitation and implications for clinical practice. A 17-year-old healthy male presented to the emergency department with severe pain on the anterior aspect of both knees and was unable to walk, having been brought in by ambulance after hearing a crack whilst jogging
