Frontal sinus repair with free autologous bone grafts and fibrin glue.

BACKGROUND: The authors describe a technique for repairing the frontal sinus with autologous bone grafts removed during craniotomy and fibrin glue. METHODS: This technique was used in 12 patients who underwent craniotomy for aneurysms (n = 9), brain tumors (n = 2), and acute epidural hematoma (n = 1). RESULTS: The repair was successful in all cases. There were no instances of postoperative infection or leakage of cerebrospinal fluid. No complications from the repair have occurred over a mean follow-up of 51 months. CONCLUSION: This technique is simpler than others used to seal a frontal sin

New Surgical Devices for Closed Reduction of Frontal Sinus Bone Fracture.

Traditional surgical interventions for frontal sinus fractures necessitate a cut on the forehead skin, and extant closed reduction techniques aimed at enhancing accessibility continue to grapple with secure tool fixation, stable bone elevation, and screw breakage risk. To address these challenges and augment surgical efficiency, this study introduces novel surgical devices. Design parameters for models with spiral or L-shaped tips are established, considering practical medical requirements and constraints, and subsequently validated through finite element method numerical simulations using com

Managment of frontal sinus fracture: obliteration sinus with cancellous bone graft.

Frontal sinus fractures make up about 2-15% of all facial fractures. This is relatively low frequency of occurrence, but it has a large potential of complication and may involve not only the frontal sinuse but more importantly the brain and the eyes. The management depends of the complexity. If anterior wall is fractured with grossly involved nasofrontal duct (NFD) in the injury it is paramount to occlude NFD. Very often, sinus obliteration is done at the same time. In our expirience autogenous cancellous bone graft is considered to be the best grafting material. It has the less short - or long

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst of frontal sinus.

INTRODUCTION: Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (POF) is a rare, slowly progressive tumor of the extragnathic craniofacial bones, with a tendency toward locally aggressive behavior. CASE REPORT: The pathognomonic histologic feature is the presence of spherical ossicles, which are similar to psammoma bodies. DISCUSSION: Fibro-osseous lesions composed of POF and aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the frontal sinus in a 12-year-old boy is reported, followed by a literature review. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the second case of a fibro-osseous lesion composed of ossifying fibroma with reactiv

Localized eosinophilic granuloma (Langerhans' cell histiocytosis) of the orbital frontal bone.

Four patients (aged 5, 8, 14, and 51 years at initial manifestation) with isolated eosinophilic granulomas of the orbital frontal bone displayed short symptomatic periods (two weeks to three months) and some combination of erythema of the lids, a soft, palpable anterior orbital mass, periorbital pain, and osteolytic bone lesions on roentgenography. The bone lesions roentgenographically exhibited irregular, serrated, and sclerotic margins, distinguishing them from the more oval appearance of dermoid cysts. Electron microscopy performed in one case disclosed the presence of Langerhans' granules

Parallel angulated frontal bone slat cuts for treatment of metopic synostosis and other frontal skull deformities: the "cathedral dome procedure".

PURPOSE: This study aims to describe a new procedure for the treatment of metopic synostosis and other frontal skull deformities. METHOD: The procedure comprises a supraorbital bandeau widened with an interpositional graft and rounded laterally to eliminate the acute angle, and parallel angulated slat cuts in the frontal bones. Greenstick fracturing of the medial bases of these slats along a parasagittal hinge line causes fanning of the slats and expansion of the frontal flap both anteriorly and laterally making the forehead contour wider and more rounded. We performed this procedure on six i

Secondary aneurysmal bone cyst of the frontal bone with fibrous dysplasia showing rapid expansion: a case report.

A 19-year-old woman presented with swelling of the left forehead without pain. She did not have any relevant past or family history. Computed tomography showed destruction of the outer cortex of the frontal bone. A solitary mass lesion with a fluid collection was detected with magnetic resonance imaging. Because the swelling of the left forehead had enlarged rapidly with osteolytic changes, surgical removal of the lesion was performed. The lesion appeared to be enveloped in a fibrous capsule. The soft lesion was removed from the frontal bone. The outer frontal bone was absent, although the inn

Successful Treatment of Full Thickness Frontal Skull Bone Defect With Dermal Fat Grafting and Artificial Bone Grafts.

Rigid reconstruction for frontal bone defects not only improves function, but also approximates more normal appearance. However, in cases involving dural scar contractures, a concave deformation remains when rigid reconstruction is performed without compensating for dead space created by swelling of the brain. This study involved 4 cases in which a 2-stage reconstruction procedure was used to first eliminate dead space by grafting dermal fat, and subsequently carry out rigid reconstruction to achieve a natural forehead configuration. This method is advantageous and considered to be effective i

Severe Graves' disease-associated orbitopathy: A rare case of frontal bone hemangioma.

Graves' orbitopathy might be severe, requiring treatment with high-dose glucocorticoids. A lytic bone lesion, malignant lesions, and diseases resulting from bone remodeling processes (eg, Paget's disease) must be excluded by markers and imagery. Outcomes of high-dose glucocorticoids and thyrotoxicosis must be screened and prevented.

Surgical Correction of Unicoronal Craniosynostosis with Frontal Bone Symmetrization and Staggered Osteotomies.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures that produce abnormal head shape. Plagiocephaly is a general term that describes unilateral flattening of the anterior or posterior quarter of the cranium. Anterior plagiocephaly is almost always due to unilateral coronal synostosis. Early surgical treatment is the best option for these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the surgical correction results of unicoronal craniosynostosis with frontal bone symmetrization and staggered osteotomies. METHODS: All unicoronal craniosynostosis cases treate
