BACKGROUND: The radiological and surgical anatomy of the frontal sinus should be well-known in all age groups to successfully manage frontal sinus diseases and reduce the risk of complications in sinus surgery.
PURPOSE: To define frontal sinus and frontal cells according to the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC) criteria in pediatrics and adults.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 320 frontal recess regions of 160 individuals (80 pediatric, 80 adults) who underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan of the paranasal sinus (PNS) were included in the study. Agger nasi cells,

The osteoplastic approach is indicated for frontal sinus surgery if optimal exposure of the entire frontal sinus is required for possibly complete removal of the mucous membrane and sinus obliteration. In a retrospective study we evaluated 75 patients whose osteoplastic frontal sinus operations were performed in Fulda between 1979 and 1992 and examined indications for surgery, complications and outcome. All patients were examined clinically and subjective complaints were recorded. Indications for surgery were trauma (43), acute and chronic infections (19), tumors (11) and sinus pneumatoceles (

INTRODUCTION: The surgical management of chronic frontal sinus disorders remains a challenge for rhinologists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the result of Draf III in a series of patients who underwent this procedure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients were included in this study. Demographic data, history of prior surgery, asthma, aspirin sensitivity and Lund-Mackay score were recorded. A visual analog scale was used for frontal-related symptoms. Patients were followed for a mean duration of 17.5 months and the patency of the frontal sinus ostium was closely monitored.
RESULTS:

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to report an overview of fracture patterns and surgical approaches for 15 patients who were treated in our Indhira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, Pondicherry, India from 2010 to 2015.
METHOD AND MATERIAL: Fifteen people were included in the study, which were diagnosed with anterior table fracture of the frontal sinus and were randomly admitted in our institution. All patients were evaluated preoperatively with axial and coronal computed tomography scans before operating. The parameters used to classify the patients were age, mode of injury, a

Frontal recess dissection proposes many challenges to the surgeon. These challenges stem from its highly variable nature, small caliber, difficult visualization, and proximity to vital structures such as the skull base and orbit. As such, delicate mucosal-sparing dissection of the frontal recess with proper instrumentation is paramount to minimize scar formation and ensure patency. Here, the article explores key instrumentation in frontal recess surgery with an emphasis on hand instruments and adjunctive technologies.

The traditional treatment of frontal sinus fractures is undergoing a review by many clinicians. This review will undoubtedly contribute to the existing controversy surrounding the management of patients with this condition. This article seeks to further the review and suggest the authors' perspective on a more appropriate approach to the care of patients with frontal sinus injuries.

Frontal sinus fracture represents 5 to 12% of all maxillofacial fractures. Because of the anatomic position of the frontal sinus and the enormous amount of force required to create a fracture in this area, these injuries are often devastating and associated with other trauma. Associated injuries include skull base, intracranial, ophthalmologic, and maxillofacial. Complications should be categorized to address these four areas as well as the skin-soft tissue envelope, muscle, and bone. Other variables that should be examined are age of the patient, gender, mechanism of injury, fracture pattern,

Frontal sinus fractures are relatively uncommon maxillofacial injuries, making up only 5 to 12 percent of all facial fractures. Associated intracranial, ophthalmologic, and other maxillofacial injuries are very common because of the force of injury required to fracture the frontal bone. High-resolution computed tomography of the frontal region in multiple planes is essential for predicting the degree of frontal injury, associated injuries, and the type of procedure indicated. Exploration of the frontal sinus with reduction alone is reserved for a small minority of very simple fractures. Most f

Management of frontal sinus fractures (FSF) has been the subject of great debate for more than six decades. Multiple treatment options and algorithms have been proposed by multiple specialties throughout the years; however, the optimal method of frontal sinus repair has yet to be elucidated. Because of the location of the frontal sinus and its proximity to numerous intracranial structures, inadequate treatment may lead to life-threatening intracranial infectious complications. Meningitis, encephalitis, and brain abscess are the most common intracranial complications. Other complications includ

The analysis of urgent treatment of frontal sinus inflammation from 1985 to 1999 and 6 months of 2000 made in ENT clinic of Izhevsk shows advantages of conservative therapy (trepanation puncture and frontal sinus probing) in diagnosis and treatment of frontal sinus inflammation. Literature data on safety of such manipulations is confirmed.

Frontal sinus osteomas are 57% of all paranasal sinus osteomas, with an incidence of 00.1 to 3%. Surgical removal of the frontal sinus osteomas is done in symptomatic patients. Asymptomatic patients can be managed conservatively or submitted to surgery in spite of its location or extension. Five patients having the diagnosis of frontal sinus osteoma were operated on between 1995 and 1999. Medium age was 38.4 years (from 12 to 55 years), 3 male and 2 female. Symptoms occurred from 6 months to 3 years, average of 10.5 months. Four patients had previous headache and one had epistaxis. All patient

Frontal sinusitis following functional endoscopic sinus surgery may represent persistent, recurrent, or iatrogenic disease. The narrow frontal recess is unforgiving of technical errors, and surgery within its confines requires ample training, skill, and patience. Revision surgery in this area, compromised by scarring and long-standing mucosal disease, demands even more of the endoscopic sinus surgeon. While successful treatment of this condition is a formidable task, strict attention to principles of proper medical and surgical therapy can increase the chances of a favorable outcome.

Although intranasal frontal sinusotomy can now be performed for most cases of chronic frontal sinusitis, the osteoplastic frontal sinus procedure with obliteration, unfortunately, still is considered by many to be the standard for chronic frontal sinusitis against that which other frontal sinus procedures are judged. Unobliterating the previously obliterated sinus is indicated for patients with evidence of frontal sinus pathology on CT or MR images and for patients with chronic symptoms with equivocal radiologic results. The reopened frontal sinus can be reventilated and remucosalized, or reob

Surgery for frontal sinusitis in children is unusual. When required, surgery for ostiomeatal disease or, in certain circumstances, frontal sinus trephination is usually all that is required. Nevertheless, for a few children, surgery of the nasofrontal recess and frontal sinus is required and can be very beneficial. A variety of surgical approaches to the frontal sinus are discussed. Functional endoscopic surgery based upon physiologic principles and the concept of reversible disease is emphasized.
