Use of Functional Foods and Oral Supplements as Adjuvants in Cancer Treatment.

In cancer patients treated with radiotherapy to the abdominopelvic region, dietary modifications and the use of functional foods (fortified food with added ingredients to provide specific health improving benefits, such as antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and glutamine), may contribute to the improvement of the toxic effects of treatment, including nausea, diarrhea, and constipation, among others. With the aim of analyzing which coadjuvant foods benefit these patients, scientific evidence was gathered by a group of experts. For these patients, the authors recommend a diet that includes suffi

The multiple functions of the endocannabinoid system: a focus on the regulation of food intake.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis sativa (also known as marijuana) has been cultivated by man for more than 5,000 years. However, there was a rise in its use in the 20th century for recreational, religious or spiritual, and medicinal purposes. The main psychoactive constituent of cannabis, whose structure was identified in the 1960's, is Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol. On the other hand, the discovery of cannabinoid receptors and their endogenous agonists took place only very recently. In fact, the first cannabinoid receptor (CB1) was cloned in 1990, followed 3 years later by the characterization of a second

[Characteristics of the evacuatory function of the stomach when fat is added to the food].

In dogs with fistulas in fundal and antral parts of the stomach and in the duodenum, the influence of adding fat (margarine) to carbohydrate food (bread) on the stomach evacuation was studied. Progressive increase of fat (25, 50 and 75%) in the food stimuli delayed the stomach evacuation, the delay assuring no stability of caloric transport to the duodenum. Destroying of pyloric sphincter led to an acceleration of the stomach evacuation. The latter finding suggests that the pyloric sphincter plays a major role in the regulation of stomach emptying from the fat food.

Comparative binding and functional behavior of three benzaldehyde-based food flavorants with pepsin: a combined computational, multi-spectroscopic, and functional study.

Vanillin (Van), ethylvanillin (Eva), and veratraldehyde (Ver) are three widely used food flavorants that belong to the benzaldehyde family of compounds. In this study, their interaction mechanisms with pepsin (PEP) was systematically investigated using computational simulations and multi-spectroscopic techniques, along with enzymatic activity and antioxidant capacity assays. Molecular docking revealed that all three ligands occupied the catalytic cleft near Asp32 and Asp215 with comparable binding energies, although Eva exhibited a slightly more favorable interaction. Molecular dynamics simula

Food addiction severity is associated with decreased functional connectivity and responses to palatable food pictures in brain areas involved in emotion and cognitive control.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with obesity frequently report impulsivity or loss control of food intake, reflecting the dysfunction of brain regions involved in reward and cognitive control processing related to food addiction (FA). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) may help to identify the cognitive processes underlying FA. In patients with obesity, we aimed at identifying (i) fMRI specific responses in brain regions involved in hedonic and motivational processes (striatum), and cognitive control (e.g. prefrontal cortex) according to FA severity; (ii) whether FA severity is related t

A Method for Assessing the Prevalence of Food Insecurity in Older Adults Based on Resource Constraints and Food-Related Physical Functioning Limitations.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with food-related physical functioning limitations often face food insecurity because of challenges that go beyond resource constraints. Difficulties with food acquisition at retailers, and food preparation and consumption are not captured by the United States Department of Agriculture's food security measure. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop a method to assess the overall prevalence of food insecurity regardless of underlying cause using validated measures that capture both food-related physical functioning limitations and resource-constraint fo

Encapsulation in Food Systems: From Technique-Driven Approaches to Functional, Scalable, and Sustainable Industrial Applications.

Encapsulation is an essential technology for the stabilization and controlled delivery of bioactive compounds in contemporary foods, but studies are mostly technique-based and seem not to be associated with the actual performance in the world. This review considers micro- and nanoencapsulation based on real-world performance bioavailability, food-matrix compatibility, industrial scalability, and regulatory feasibility, as well as long-term environmental sustainability as opposed to encapsulation efficiencies in the laboratory. We demonstrate that high encapsulation efficacy is not necessarily

Cysteine-Rich Peptides in Food Systems: Structure, Sources, Functional Properties, Potential Applications, and Future Perspectives.

Cysteine-rich peptides (CRPs) are structurally diverse bioactive peptides in which cysteine residues form disulfide bonds or, in some lanthipeptides, cysteine-derived thioether bridges. These constraints can improve resistance to thermal, chemical, and enzymatic stress, although stability and activity remain peptide- and matrix-dependent. CRPs have attracted interest as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory agents in food preservation, functional foods, and active packaging. Nisin provides the clearest regulatory and commercial precedent: this lanthipeptide is used in selected food
