Using a resin-ionomer in guided tissue regenerative procedures: technique and application--case reports.

The purpose of these case reports is to introduce a potential use for a resin-ionomer in guided tissue regeneration. The resin-ionomer is used in a two-fold manner (1) to lute an e-PTFE membrane in place in furcation defects and (2) to act as a barrier itself in furcation and infrabony defects. Clinical observations made in this report indicate that a resin-ionomer barrier may be placed subgingivally without sutures. In addition, the resin-ionomer, given its ability to release fluoride, may serve as a delivery system for local antimicrobial therapy during the initial stages of wound healing. F

Bone morphogenetic proteins, cementogenesis, myoblastic stem cells and the induction of periodontal tissue regeneration.

'Bone: Formation by autoinduction', initiates by invocation of soluble molecular signals which, when combined to insoluble signals or substrata trigger the ripple-like cascade of bone differentiation by induction. The osteogenic proteins of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily, the bone morphogenetic/osteogenic proteins (BMPs/OPs), and uniquely in the non-human primate Papio ursinus also the three mammalian TGF-beta isoforms, induce endochondral bone formation as recapitulation of embryonic development. The pleiotropic activities of the BMPs/OPs are vast and include the i

Orthodontic treatment of periodontal defects. Part II: A systematic review on human and animal studies.

Several studies have been published focusing on the possibility to treat patients affected by periodontal defects by means of orthodontic treatment. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the efficacy of the orthodontic treatment applied to the therapy of infraosseous defects, gingival recessions, and furcation lesions. An electronic and a manual search were performed based on a PICO assessment worksheet. Both human and animal studies were selected for this review. The electronic search (from January 1966 to December 2009) and the hand search (from January 1988 to December 2009) were

Transplantation of human tooth with proliferating periodontal tissue--long-term clinical follow-up study--.

A case report is presented on transplantation of a left third molar to replace a right second molar lost due to large furcation perforation. Two weeks after surgery, a reentry surgical procedure was performed on the furcation defect of the second molar to remove membrane and retrieve proliferating periodontal tissue. The left third molar and proliferating periodontal tissue were then transplanted into the bone defect of the right second molar. Radiographically, the transplanted tooth showed no root resorption over a 3-year period. The results indicate that teeth replanted with proliferating pe

Cervical enamel projections and associated pouch-like opening in mandibular furcations.

BACKGROUND: Cervical enamel projections (CEPs) have been listed among the tooth-associated risk factors that could lead to isolated furcation defects around molar teeth. This is more likely when Grade III CEPs are present. However, the histologic aspects of the CEP interface with regard to the presence or absence of cementum over the enamel projection within the furcation have not been well described. This study was initially undertaken to evaluate this relationship. METHODS: Thirty-five mandibular molars with Grade III CEPs were selected from a collection of extracted teeth and evaluated for

Guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of infrabony defects on maxillary premolars. A pilot study.

The present study evaluated clinically and radiographically the short-term results of the healing of infrabony defects at maxillary premolars treated according to guided tissue regeneration (GTR). 9 patients with bilateral presence of infrabony defects with or without furcation involvements at maxillary premolars were selected. At baseline assessments of plaque and gingival indices, bleeding, probing pocket depth and attachment level, and furcation measurements were recorded. Conventional radiographs were obtained in a way that assured a reproducible projection geometry. One premolar was rando

Histologic and histometric responses to polymeric composite grafts.

The present study was designed to determine whether a polymeric composite promotes new attachment in artificially-induced bony defects in the dog model. HTR, hard tissue replacement, is a non-resorbable calcium-layered polymer of polymethyl-methacrylate and hydroxyethyl-methacrylate. It has been reported to be clinically non-inflammatory, osteophilic, and osteoconductive. For the study, 4 beagle dogs, 4 to 6 years old with no periodontal disease were used. Mucoperiosteal flaps were raised including the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th maxillary premolars. Buccal Class II furcation defects were created on the

30 Years of Enamel Matrix Derivative (EMD): Biological Foundations and Systematic Review With Meta-Analyses Across Multiple Clinical Indications.

AIM: Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has been utilized in periodontology for over 30 years to promote periodontal tissue regeneration by mimicking key biological processes of root development. Preclinical studies confirmed that EMD induces the formation of new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, especially when applied to dry, conditioned root surfaces with minimal/no blood contamination. After reviewing the biological foundations for the functioning of EMD, this systematic review analyzed the efficacy of EMD across multiple clinical indications. METHODS: Randomized clinical tri
