Fusobacterium Necrophorum Septicemia Secondary to an Ovarian Abscess: A Case Report.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is part of the normal oropharyngeal flora and can result in a life-threatening systemic infection known as Lemierre's syndrome. A rare presentation of F. necrophorum infection is seen in the female genital tract and is typically due to obstetric infections. Here we present a unique case of F. necrophorum without traditional features of Lemierre's syndrome with the female genital tract as a primary site. A 50-year-old female presents with a two-month history of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and weight loss. She ultimately developed bilateral lower extremity necroti

A case report of severe Fusobacterium nucleatum sepsis secondary to nephrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is a resident anaerobic bacterium, which in rare cases may invade blood from the head and neck or the digestive tract to cause bacteremia and induce venous thrombosis. F. nucleatum is closely related to abdominal tumors, but it has not been reported in relation to renal tumors. We report herein a possible case. CASE PRESENTATION: This patient had kidney cancer with thrombosis in the right renal vein but had no sign of infection. After radical nephrectomy, thrombi formed in his left renal vein, and when removed, severe sepsis occurred. He did

Primary fusobacterium osteomyelitis and pyomyositis of the thigh in an immunocompetent young adult.

An unusual case of an immunocompetent young adult with osteomyelitis and pyomyositis of his right thigh is presented. Despite the absence of typical clinical signs, a high index of suspicion and 16S RNA PCR led to an early diagnosis of Fusobacterium infection and subsequent successful multidisciplinary treatment.

Prevalence of Fusobacterium necrophorum in tonsils from patients with chronic tonsillitis.

CONCLUSION: There was a high prevalence of Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) in patients with chronic tonsillitis in the age group 15-23 years. This indicates that FN might play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic tonsillitis in this age group, which is also the age group in which chronic or recurrent tonsillitis is most common. OBJECTIVES: The role of FN in patients with acute and chronic tonsillitis is unclear. Thus, this study investigated the occurrence of FN in tonsils of patients with chronic tonsillitis. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of FN in patients t

The aetiology of pharyngotonsillitis in adolescents and adults - Fusobacterium necrophorum is commonly found.

Sore throat is common in primary healthcare. Aetiological studies have focused on the presence of a limited number of pathogens. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of a wide range of bacteria and viruses, including Fusobacterium necrophorum, in patients with pharyngotonsillitis and in asymptomatic controls. A prospective case control study was performed in primary healthcare in Kronoberg County, Sweden. Patients (n=220) aged 15 to 45 years with a suspected acute pharyngotonsillitis, and controls (n=128), were included. Nasopharyngeal and throat swabs were analysed for

Gradenigo's syndrome: is fusobacterium different? Two cases and review of the literature.

Gradenigo's syndrome is a rare but life threatening complication of acute otitis media (AOM), which includes a classic triad of otitis media, deep facial pain and ipsilateral abducens nerve paralysis. The incidence of Fusobacterium necrophorum infections has increased in recent years. We describe two cases of Gradenigo's syndrome caused by F. necrophorum. Additional four cases were identified in a review of the literature. Gradenigo's syndrome as well as other neurologic complications should be considered in cases of complicated acute otitis media. F. necrophorum should be empirically treated

[Fusobacterium necrophorum--cause of a mastoiditis with skull- and mandibular joint osteomyelitis].

BACKGROUND: The typical clinical manifestation of an infection with the obligate anaerobic, gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria Fusobacterium necrophorum is the Lemierre syndrome. As the cause of osteomyelitis and mastoiditis factors of the normal bacteria flora are more likely to be found than Fusobacterium necrophorum. Nevertheless, Necrobacillosis is an important differential diagnosis of complicated courses of mastoiditis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Because the clinical courses of mastoiditis with osteomyelitis may differ a lot, making the appropriate diagnosis more difficult, consistently and

Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremic tonsillitis: 2 Cases and a review of the literature.

Fusobacterium necrophorum can cause endemic pharyngitis and the Lemierre syndrome. Four previous case reports and one epidemiologic study have documented that some F. necrophorum pharyngitis patients develop bacteremia without developing the complete Lemierre syndrome. We report two more patients who have bacteremic F. necrophorum pharyngitis. We summarize the clinical presentation of these six patients. All received early diagnosis and excellent response to antibiotics. We speculate that prompt antibiotic treatment may have prevented the more serious Lemierre syndrome. Adolescents and young a

Human infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum (Necrobacillosis), with a focus on Lemierre's syndrome.

Human infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum usually involves F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme rather than F. necrophorum subsp. necrophorum, which is a common pathogen in animals. Lemierre's syndrome, or postanginal sepsis, is the most common life-threatening manifestation. Tonsillitis is followed by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and then a septicemia with septic emboli in lungs and other sites. Recent evidence suggests that F. necrophorum can be limited to the throat and cause persistent or recurrent tonsillitis. F. necrophorum is unique among non-spore-forming ana

Cloning and characterization of the L-cysteine desulfhydrase gene of Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan are the two major compounds associated with oral malodor. These compounds are highly toxic, and are thought to play an important role in periodontal disease. Fusobacterium nucleatum, an oral bacterium, produces large amounts of hydrogen sulfide from L-cysteine by the enzymatic action of L-cysteine desulfhydrase. We cloned and sequenced the cdl gene encoding L-cysteine desulfhydrase from F. nucleatum ATCC 10953, and revealed that the structural cdl gene consists of 921 bp and encodes a 33.4-kDa protein. The cloned gene was inserted into an expression vector

Further observations on enhancement of the infectivity of Fusobacterium necrophorum by other bacteria.

It had already been shown with a single virulent strain (A42) of Fusobacterium necrophorum that suspension of the fusobacteria in sub-lethal doses of broth cultures of other bacteria reduced the minimum infective dose (greater than 10(6) organisms) for mice by subcutaneous inoculation, sometimes to less than 10 organisms. The present study extended the known range of bacteria with strong infectivity-enhancing properties to include Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella oxytoca and Staphylococcus aureus; and those with weaker effect to include Bacillus subtilis, 'Bacteroides melaninogenicus', Clostridium

Fusobacterium periodonticum promotes colorectal tumorigenesis via decanoic acid-driven neutrophil chemotaxis.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis and immune dysregulation are closely associated with the development of colorectal cancer. Identifying the mechanistic links among specific microbial species, metabolites, and immune responses is crucial for uncovering novel insights into its pathogenesis. Here we show, through metagenomic and metabolomic analyses of clinical cohorts, that Fusobacterium periodonticum is significantly enriched in colorectal cancer patients and strongly correlated with elevated decanoic acid levels. Single-cell transcriptomic results further reveal tissue-specific neutrophil enrichment i

Microbe-driven immune suppression in colorectal cancer: the Fusobacterium nucleatum playbook.

Fusobacterium nucleatum, a key oral-pathobiont in colorectal cancer (CRC), has evolved from a presumed "passenger" to an active "co-conspirator" in tumorigenesis. This review systematically delineates its core role as an "architect of the immune microenvironment," whereby it remodels T-cell immune responses through precise mechanisms to establish an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Specifically, F. nucleatum employs virulence factors such as Fap2 and FadA for specific colonization, and achieves immune evasion by inhibiting NK and T-cell function and recruiting myeloid-derived suppress

2'-Fucosyllactose Attenuates Fusobacterium nucleatum Virulence and Modulates the Oral Microbiota.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is a key periodontal pathobiont associated with oral inflammation. This bacterium forms biofilms and expresses adhesins that facilitate its adhesion to and invasion of gingival epithelial cells. These processes disrupt the epithelial barrier and trigger oral inflammation, and in some cases, systemic inflammation. Conventional antimicrobial strategies predominantly depend on the utilization of antibiotics. Nevertheless, this can result in the proliferation of drug-resistant strains and the disruption of the oral microbiome equilibrium. As the predominant h

Unveiling Fusobacterium nucleatum's role in colorectal cancer: the inflammatory microenvironment connection.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), a gram-negative oral bacterium, has been implicated in promoting colorectal cancer (CRC) progression by modulating the inflammatory microenvironment. Recent studies have shown that gut microbiota imbalance plays a crucial role in CRC development, and Fn, specifically, has been found to exist in the intestine and exert pro-tumorigenic effects. However, the precise mechanisms underlying Fn-induced CRC progression remain elusive. METHODS: A systematic experimental strategy was adopted to explore the function of Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) in colorectal

Fusobacterium nucleatum infection leading to rare hepatorenal abscess: a case report.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a gram-negative anaerobic bacterium commonly associated with periodontal disease. However, its role in extraoral infections, particularly in immunocompetent individuals, is increasingly recognized. We report a rare case of hepatorenal abscess caused by F. nucleatum in a previously healthy woman, initially suspected to have a malignant tumor based on PET-CT findings. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of abscess aspirate confirmed the pathogen. The patient responded well to targeted antibiotic therapy. This case highlights the importance of considering anaerobic pathoge

An Orbital Abscess Caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum Mimicking Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome.

Fusobacterium species, particularly Fusobacterium nucleatum, are anaerobic gram-negative bacteria found in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. Infections caused by these organisms exhibit diverse clinical manifestations. Here we report a rare case of orbital abscess caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum, which was initially misdiagnosed as Tolosa-Hunt syndrome. The patient was controlled conservatively, and surgical intervention was withheld due to poor prognosis, diabetes, and logistical limitations. This case report highlights the need to consider infection even when imaging and laborato

Characterization of Three New Outer Membrane Adhesion Proteins in Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Fusobacterium necrophorum, an anaerobic Gram-negative pathogen, causes necrotic cattle infections, impacting livestock health and the US feedlot industry. Antibiotic administration is the mainstay for treating F. necrophorum infections, although resistance hampers their effectiveness. Vaccination, especially targeting outer membrane proteins (OMPs) due to their antigenic properties and host specificity, offers an alternative to antibiotics. This study identified high-binding-affinity adhesion proteins from F. necrophorum using binding and pull-down assays with bovine adrenal gland endothelial
