Lemierre's syndrome (necrobacillosis).

Lemierre's syndrome or postanginal septicaemia (necrobacillosis) is caused by an acute oropharyngeal infection with secondary septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and frequent metastatic infections. Fusobacterium necrophorum is the most common pathogen isolated from the patients. The interval between the oropharyngeal infection and the onset of the septicaemia is usually short. The most common sites of septic embolisms are the lungs and joints, and other locations can be affected. A high degree of clinical suspicion is needed to diagnose the syndrome. Computed tomography of the

The role of adhesins of Fusobacterium nucleatum in colorectal cancer - a structural perspective.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is frequently found in the colon microbiome of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The bacterium is not only a passive bystander of CRC, but is actively involved in disease progression through mediating tumor growth stimulation, metastasis, and immune evasion. These outcomes are achieved through the action of several adhesins that are located on the outer membrane surface of F. nucleatum, which bind to different receptors on tumor or immune cells. Adhesin-receptor interaction as the initial step of host-pathogen interaction then triggers signal transduction pathways respo

Fusobacterium nucleatum and Gastric Cancer: An Emerging Connection.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a Gram-negative anaerobe traditionally associated with periodontal disease, has recently emerged as a putative contributor to gastric carcinoma (GC) pathogenesis. Beyond its detection in gastric tissues, particularly in patients negative for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or in advanced GC cases, F. nucleatum exerts diverse oncogenic effects. It promotes GC progression by modulating the tumor microenvironment through IL-17/NF-κB signaling, inducing tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs), upregulating PD-L1 expression, and enhancing immune evasion. Moreover

Fabrication of hyaluronic acid-inulin coated Enterococcus faecium for colon-targeted delivery to fight Fusobacterium nucleatum.

The abundance of Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is highly associated with the development and poor prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC), which is regarded as a promising target for CRC. However, until now, the novel strategy to clear F. nucleatum in the colon and CRC has not been well proposed. Herein, a probiotic strain Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium, EF47) is verified to secrete various organic acids and bacteriocins to exert superior antimicrobial activity towards F. nucleatum. However, the oral delivery of EF47 is affected by the complex digestive tract environment, so we design

Associations Between Findings of Fusobacterium necrophorum or β-Hemolytic Streptococci and Complications in Pharyngotonsillitis-A Registry-Based Study in Southern Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Most pharyngotonsillitis guidelines focus on the identification of group A streptococci (GAS), guided by clinical scores determining whom to test with a rapid antigen detection test. Nevertheless, many patients testing negative with this test are evaluated for group C/G streptococci (GCS/GGS) and Fusobacterium necrophorum, yet their importance remains debated. Our primary aim was to evaluate associations between complications and findings of F. necrophorum, GAS, or GCS/GGS in pharyngotonsillitis. METHODS: This was a retrospective, registry-based study of pharyngotonsillitis cases

Lemierre's Syndrome Due to the Zoonotic Anaerobe Bacteroides pyogenes: Case Report and Literature Review.

Although Fusobacterium necrophorum is well described as an emerging pathogen of acute mastoiditis in young children, infection with other anaerobes can lead to similar severe sequelae including intracranial and extracranial suppurative thrombophlebitis and sepsis. We describe a patient whose unremarkable exposure history assumed increased significance upon obtaining the results of 16S next generation sequencing from a surgical specimen. The novel pathogen Bacteroides pyogenes is reviewed herein.

Diagnosis and management of pyothorax in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

OBJECTIVE: To describe the diagnosis, management, and outcome of pyothorax in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo). CASE SUMMARY: A domestic ferret was evaluated for a history of lethargy, anorexia, and pyrexia. Pleural effusion was detected with radiography and ultrasonography, and a diagnosis of pyothorax was made following cytologic evaluation of pleural fluid. Bilateral thoracostomy tubes were placed for thoracic drainage and lavage, and the ferret was treated with intravenous crystalloid fluids, antimicrobials, and analgesics. Bacterial culture of the pleural fluid yielded Fusobacte

[Non-spore-forming anaerobes in suppurative-inflammatory diseases of the ORL organs].

Nonspore-forming anaerobic microorganisms were isolated in 83.3% of patients with suppurative-inflammatory diseases (SID) of ENT organs. It was found that so-called sterile inoculations of the pus from the inflammation focus were produced by obligate anaerobes and primarily by bacteroids and gram-positive anaerobic cocci present. The application of anaerobic bacteriological procedures for examining the pathological samples from these patients enlarged significantly the spectrum of isolated microorganisms at the expense of obligate anaerobes. They formed predominant microorganisms of the suppur

Nonsurgical management of Fusobacterium necrophorum sternoclavicular septic arthritis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To date, the gold-standard treatment for sternoclavicular septic arthritis has been surgery due to the high failure and complication rates of medical treatment. In particular, presentation of Fusobacterium sternoclavicular septic arthritis has been rarely reported and very sparsely investigated, and only one other case report of septic arthritis caused by this pathogen exists in literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an otherwise healthy 38-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with sternoclavicular septic arthritis as a complication of Fusobacterium necrophorum media

[Sepsis due to fusobacteria in a young adult].

Fusobacteria belong to the normal population of the pharyngeal mucosa as well as the mucosa of the upper airways and the gastrointestinal tract. Infections are comparatively rare. The most common causative organism is Fusobacterium necrophorum. A well-known infection caused by this germ is Lemierre's syndrome. In the presented case, a 19-year-old man (123 kg body weight, 186 cm body length) was found dead in his bed in the morning after having complained of muscular fatigue and vomiting the previous day. Autopsy was carried out only two days after death. At that time, the body showed marked pu

The contribution of metagenomic next-generation sequencing to a diagnosis of gas-producing Fusobacterium-induced septic hip arthritis: A case report.

Pyogenic arthritis with gas gangrene triggered by intra-articular steroid injections can occasionally result in fatal complications. Clostridium perfringens is typically the causative pathogen, with infections caused by Fusobacterium species being relatively rare. Fusobacterium species are known to cause pyogenic infections, but due to their extreme sensitivity to oxygen, they can be difficult to detect with traditional culture methods. Recently, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has gained attention as an alternative diagnostic tool to traditional culture, enabling rapid identific
