BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), the cholinergic system has been implicated in cognitive and gait decline. The nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM), within the substantia innominata (SI), is the main cholinergic nucleus projecting to the cortex. In this study, the relationship between atrophy of the SI on cognitive phenotypes and quantitative gait performance was evaluated in relation to gray matter (GM) volume.
METHODS: Ninety-nine participants - 20 control, 42 PD with normal cognition (PD-NC), 19 PD with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and 18 PD de

BACKGROUND: Joint damage in patients with haemophilia (PwH) is commonly assessed by imaging, but few reports have described how structural changes in joints, for example, haemophilic arthropathy (HA)-affect gait ability.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated gait function among PwH with HA, PwH without HA, and people without haemophilia (non-PwH) using a Zebris FDM-T treadmill (FDM-T), an easy-to-use gait assessment instrument with a force sensor matrix.
METHODS: The following gait parameters were collected: centre of pressure trajectory intersection (COPi) anterior/posterior variability, COPi lateral va

Rapidly aging society faces with increases in neurological disorders including stroke. Hemiplegia, which is one of the common sequelae due to stroke, causes difficulties in activities of daily living. As the number of stroke patients grows, demands for gait training increases, where robotic gait training systems are necessary. A robotic gait training system, called "COWALK-I," is designed to provide pelvic motion on the transverse plane as well as leg motions in the sagittal plane during gait training sessions. The pelvic motion allows weight-shifting as well as more natural gait patterns duri

The objective of this study was to assess the gait variability of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients and to evaluate its postoperative progression. The hypothesis was that LSS patients' preoperative gait variability in the frequency domain was higher than the corresponding postoperative. A tri-axial accelerometer sensor was used for the gait measurement and a spectral differential entropy algorithm was used to measure the gait variability. Twelve subjects with LSS were measured before and after surgery. Preoperative measurements were performed 2 days before surgery. Postoperative measuremen

Despite improved definition of the problem and better understanding of its phenomenology, freezing of gait (FoG) remains a therapeutic enigma for clinicians and neuroscientists alike. Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) or other neurological disorders experiencing FoG are similarly frustrated, despite the benefits that levodopa and other medications provide for control of PD's primary motor features. For those burdened by episodes of FoG, current therapeutic options are quite limited. Some patients achieve improvements from pharmacotherapy-for example, by adjunctive use of an oral dopaminergi

Freezing of Gait (FOG) research is entering a rapidly evolving phase. Published in early 2026, the International Consortium for FOG (ICFOG) released updated clinical and technical definitions of FOG and introduced a consensus-based standardized testing protocol, the Giladi protocol (GP-FOG), which is currently still under evaluation in an ongoing study. Complementing these advances, two new outcome measures, the clinician-reported outcome (ClinRO) and the patient-reported outcome (PRO), are highlighted in this review. Recent technological developments in both detection and potential prevention

Stroke is the 2nd leading cause of death globally after ischaemic heart disease and is expected to rise more by 2030. The estimated incidence of stroke in Pakistan is about 250/100,000 individuals. Difficulty in walking is present in approximately 80% of stroke survivors. About a quarter of stroke survivors, even after receiving rehabilitation have residual gait impairments requiring assistance in activities of daily life. Almost half of stroke patients after being discharged will have episodes of fall, with majority of these falls occurring in activities like "turning". Gait is one of the key

The arrangement of a series of repetitive motions on the time axis should be planned while constructing continuous movement. To understand the mechanism for planning continuous movement and its neural basis, mice were trained to perform complicated continuous step running. The repeated foot movements and neural activities of the animals were recorded. The scaffolding peg arrangement was complex; however, the steps turned out to be more rhythmic, indicating that the mice adjusted to repeat their movements periodically rather than fitting their foot timing with the peg arrangement. In addition,

The assessment of patients presenting with disorders of gait can be a daunting task for neurologists given the broad potential localization and differential diagnosis. However, gait disorders are extremely common in outpatient neurology, and all neurologists should be comfortable with the assessment, triage, and management of patients presenting with difficulty walking. Here, we aim to present a manageable framework for neurologists to approach the assessment of patients presenting with gait dysfunction. We suggest a chief complaint-based phenomenological characterization of gait, using compon

This thesis is based on ten published articles. The experimental work was carried out at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The aim was to investigate and describe a number of basic mechanical and physiological mechanisms behind human walking. The methodologies used were biomechanical movement analysis and electrophysiology. The walking experiments were carried out in a gait lab, where the subjects were video recorded while they walked across two force platforms, which measured the ground reaction forces. Net joint moments about the hip-, knee- and ankle joint were calcu

Gait analysis utilizing foot switches and electromyography of antigravity muscles was performed on 31 patients with vertigo. Twenty-one cases had peripheral vestibular lesions (such as vestibular neuronitis, Menière's disease, traumatic labyrinthitis, small acoustic neuroma), and 10 cases had central lesions (such as spinocerebellar degeneration, pontine glioma, cerebellar tumor and giant acoustic neuroma). Parameters employed for analysis included time from heel strike to forefoot strike (HA-I), time from heel off to forefoot off (HA-II) as well as durations of stance, swing and (initial) dou

The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the gait of 20 patients with hemiplegia secondary to cerebrovascular accident (CVA) before and after a treatment regimen of resisted pelvic motions. Ten women and 10 men were studied, with a mean age of 48 years and a mean duration post-CVA of two months. Nine subjects (45%) were right hemiplegic, and 11 subjects (55%) were left hemiplegic. Treatment consisted of four sets of five repetitions each of manually resisted pelvic anterior-elevation and posterior-depression movements on the involved side. An insole footswitch system, knee electro
