Gallic acid affects intestinal-epithelial-cell integrity and selected amino-acid uptake in porcine in vitro and ex vivo permeability models.

Gallic acid (GA) is widely used as a dietary supplement due to several health-promoting effects, although its effects on intestinal-epithelial-cell integrity and transport remain mostly unknown. The present study aims to clarify the effects of GA on tight junctions and intestinal nutrient uptake through in vitro and ex vivo models. Both intestinal porcine enterocyte cell line-J2 cells and porcine middle-jejunum segments were treated with 5 (T5), 25 (T25) and 50 (T50) µm GA and mounted in Ussing chambers to determine transepithelial resistance (TEER), claudin-1 (CLDN1), occludin (OCLN), zonula

Neuroprotective effects of gallic acid in an MPP⁺-induced SH-sy5y cell model of parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) represents the second most prevalent neurodegenerative condition which leads to the progressive destruction of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra through oxidative stress mechanisms. The research evaluated Gallic Acid (GA) as a natural polyphenol with proven antioxidant properties for its ability to protect cells from 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP⁺)-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y dopaminergic cell models. METHODS: The research used SH-SY5Y cells which received 1 mM MPP⁺ treatment alongside different GA concentrations (25, 50 and 100 µM) for

Protective roles of gallic acid and lycopene against 4-nonylphenol induced testicular damage in SD rats.

4-Nonylphenol (4-NP), an endocrine disruptor, is known to induce mutagenic, toxic, or carcinogenic effects, including testicular toxicity via inducing oxidative stress and apoptosis. The objective of this work was to determine the capacity of lycopene (LC) and gallic acid (GA) to protect testicular histological structure, biochemical responses, and semen parameters in rats exposed to 4-NP. In this 28-day dietary trial, six groups (n= 6 per group) received treatment via oral gavage: a control (corn oil, 2 mL/kg/day), LC (10 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day), GA (50 mg/kg BW/day), 4-NP (125 mg/kg BW/d

RVG-functionalized microglial membrane-coated cerium-gallic acid metal-organic frameworks for multi-target Alzheimer's therapy.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder characterized by aberrant β-amyloid (Aβ) aggregation, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and disrupted metal ion homeostasis, which limit the efficacy of conventional single-target therapies. To address these intertwined pathological processes, we developed a multifunctional nanotherapeutic platform based on a cerium-gallic acid bio-metal-organic framework (CeGA-MOF). Reversible Ce3+/Ce4+ redox cycling enables efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, while gallic acid serves as both an organic ligand and metal

Orally administered gallic acid nanoparticles adhere to intestine via in-situ gelation for enhanced UC treatment.

The increasing incidence of intractable ulcerative colitis (UC) necessitates the development of targeted therapeutics. Herein, we developed a gallic acid (GA)-based nanoparticle that forms a hydrogel with GA-functionalized pectin (PG) in situ within the intestine for targeted cohesion and enhanced local drug delivery. The nanoparticle is composed of bioactive berberine (BBR) and GA. In the presence of intestinal enzymes, the GA nanoparticle covalently crosslinks with PG to form a hydrogel in the intestine after oral administration. This bioactive, mucoadhesive drug delivery system is engineere

Enzyme-Induced Photothermal and Thermally Shape-Adaptive Gelatin-Gallic Acid Hydrogel for Infected Skin Wound Management.

Effective coverage and antibacterial treatment of irregular wounds remain challenging due to complex geometries, bacterial growth, and elevated levels of reactive oxygen species, which cause prolonged inflammation and impaired healing. In this study, a gelatin-gallic acid (GGA) hydrogel was enzymatically cross-linked using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). At high concentrations (10 wt % GGA and 0.04 wt % H2O2), the oxidized gallic acid moieties formed oligomeric structures with intrinsic photothermal activity, eliminating the need for exogenous photothermal agents. Antibacterial and Osteogenesis Promotion of Bionic Extracellular Matrix Implant Coating Based on Gallic Acid Self-Assembly.

Oral health problems, particularly tooth defects, can significantly affect people's quality of life and overall well-being. The development of titanium (Ti) dental implants has largely replaced natural tooth roots to prevent periodontal and gastrointestinal diseases. However, challenges such as postoperative bacterial infections and poor osseointegration continue to hinder progress in dental implant technology. To tackle these issues, we used hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and gallic acid-modified gelatin (GAG) to create extracellular matrix (ECM) coatings on titanium

Short-term exposure to the simple polyphenolic compound gallic acid induces neuronal hyperactivity in zebrafish larvae.

A growing body of evidence suggests that the biological effects of polyphenols are not restricted to antioxidant activity, but they exert a wide range of modulatory effects on metabolic pathways, cellular signaling and gene expression. In this study, we tested the minimum safe concentration of gallic acid (GA) in 72 hpf zebrafish larvae in order to evaluate the effects on the central nervous system and the behavioral response. We showed that a short exposure (30 min) induces the depletion of the two main excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, Glu and GABA, respectively, in the larval ner

Gallic Acid Alleviates Gouty Arthritis by Inhibiting NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation and Pyroptosis Through Enhancing Nrf2 Signaling.

Gallic acid is an active phenolic acid widely distributed in plants, and there is compelling evidence to prove its anti-inflammatory effects. NLRP3 inflammasome dysregulation is closely linked to many inflammatory diseases. However, how gallic acid affects the NLRP3 inflammasome remains unclear. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the effects of gallic acid on the NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptosis, as well as its effect on gouty arthritis in mice. The results showed that gallic acid inhibited lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and pyroptosis in lipopolys

Immobilization studies of Candida Antarctica lipase B on gallic acid resin-grafted magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles.

Purpose: Here, we present the successful preparation of a highly efficient gallic acid resin grafted with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and containing a branched brush polymeric shell. Methods: Using a convenient co-precipitation method, we prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles stabilized by citric acid. These nanoparticles underwent further silica modification and amino functionalization followed by gallic acid functionalization on their surface. Under alkaline conditions, we used a condensation reaction that combined formaldehyde and gallic, to graft the gallic acid-formaldehyde resin on the surface.

Antiviral Effects of Black Raspberry (Rubus coreanus) Seed and Its Gallic Acid against Influenza Virus Infection.

Influenza is a serious public health concern worldwide, as it causes significant morbidity and mortality. The emergence of drug-resistant viral strains requires new approaches for the treatment of influenza. In this study, Rubus coreanus seed (RCS) that is left over from the production of wine or juice was found to show antiviral activities against influenza type A and B viruses. Using the time-of-addition plaque assay, viral replication was almost completely abolished by simultaneous treatment with the RCS fraction of less than a 1-kDa molecular weight (RCSF1). One of the polyphenols derived

Gallic acid ameliorates hyperglycemia and improves hepatic carbohydrate metabolism in rats fed a high-fructose diet.

Herein, we investigated the hypoglycemic effect of plant gallic acid (GA) on glucose uptake in an insulin-resistant cell culture model and on hepatic carbohydrate metabolism in rats with a high-fructose diet (HFD)-induced diabetes. Our hypothesis is that GA ameliorates hyperglycemia via alleviating hepatic insulin resistance by suppressing hepatic inflammation and improves abnormal hepatic carbohydrate metabolism by suppressing hepatic gluconeogenesis and enhancing the hepatic glycogenesis and glycolysis pathways in HFD-induced diabetic rats. Gallic acid increased glucose uptake activity by 19
