Identification of genes responding to nematode infection in red grouse.

The identification of genes involved in a host's response to parasite infection provides both a means for understanding the pathways involved in immune defence and a target for examining host-parasite co-evolution. Most studies rely on a candidate gene approach derived from model systems to identify gene targets of interest, and there have been a dearth of studies geared towards providing a holistic overview of immune response from natural populations. We carried out an experiment in a natural population of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) to manipulate levels of Trichostrongylus tenuis p

Immunohistochemistry of the cytoskeleton in the excurrent ducts of the testis in birds of the Galloanserae monophyly.

The presence, location and degree of immunoexpression of various microfilament (MF) and intermediate filament (IF) systems (actin, cytokeratins, desmin, vimentin) were studied in the excurrent ducts of the testis in sexually mature and active galliform (Japanese quail, domestic fowl, turkey) and anseriform (duck) birds. These proteins were variably expressed between the epithelia and periductal tissue (periductal smooth muscle cell layer and interductal connective tissue) types and between species. Variable heterogeneous co-expression of filament systems was also found in the various duct epit

Semen characterization and sperm storage in Cabot's Tragopan.

The semen quality of Cabot's Tragopan, the dependence of sperm yields on frequency of semen collection, and the duration of sperm storage in females were investigated. The results are as follows: 1) The average duration of the period in which Cabot's Tragopan can produce an ejaculate was about 70 d. The ejaculate volume ranged from 15 to 100 microL. The average concentration of the ejaculate was 2.31 x 10(9) mL(-1). There were 11.69 (+/- 0.77)% abnormal spermatozoa per ejaculate. Three of 11 males yielded more than 50 microL of semen per collection most of the time. 2) The ejaculate volumes, t

Recombination and Incomplete Lineage Sorting Resolve the Enigma of Lysozyme Evolution.

Lysozyme has long been a model for understanding enzyme structure, function, and evolution. Early studies revealed a conflict between organismal phylogeny and the distribution of three functionally important amino acid residues in galliform birds. Lysozymes differing at all three amino acids appear functionally equivalent, but intermediates exhibit reduced thermostability and have not been observed in nature. However, the phylogeny suggests two independent occurrences of the three mutations, requiring two separate transitions through putatively low fitness intermediates. We reexamined this app

Multi-Locus Sequence Analysis Indicates Potential Cryptic Speciation in the Chigger Mite Neoschoengastia gallinarum (Hatori, 1920) Parasitising Birds in Asia.

Neoschoengastia gallinarum is widely distributed in Asia, preferentially parasitising birds, and heavy infestations have clinical impacts on domestic fowl. In common with other trombiculid mites, the genetic diversity and potential variation in host preferences or pathology induced by N. gallinarum are poorly understood. This study aimed to unravel the geographical variation and population structure of N. gallinarum collected from galliform birds in Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand by inference from concatenated mitochondrial-encoded cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), and nuclear-encoded in

Cryptic species within the Tetratrichomonas gallinarum species complex revealed by molecular polymorphism.

Tetratrichomonas gallinarum is a widespread intestinal parasite of galliform and anseriform birds. The pathogenicity of this species is controversial, presenting an unsettled problem as yet. We analysed the polymorphism and genetic relationship among 29 isolates of T. gallinarum obtained from eight bird species and five T. gallinarum-like isolates from the oral cavity and lower respiratory tract of human patients. Two methods were used for the analyses: RAPD and sequencing of 16S rRNA, 5.8S rRNA, ITS1 and ITS2 genes, both producing consistent and well-supported results. The isolates were divid

Annual variation in the concentrations of circulating hormones in capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus).

Seasonal variation in the levels of immunoreactive lutropin (LH), follitropin (FSH), prolactin (PRL), corticosterone (B), thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3) was measured in the plasma of male and female capercaillies (Tetrao urogallus, Galliformes) in captivity (latitude N 67 degrees). In male capercaillies there was an increase in the concentrations of LH and FSH beginning in March and reaching their maxima in May, which correlated with the nesting period. The concentration of plasma PRL increased from the end of April and reached its highest level simultaneously with the rapid fall of

Unraveling the host range of Plasmodium huffi: morphological, histopathological and molecular characterization in red-legged seriemas from Brazil.

Avian Plasmodium parasites can be pathogenic to their vertebrate hosts. Although cases of anaemia are frequently reported in parasitized birds, the potential damage caused by the parasite during the exoerythrocytic reproduction phase remains poorly investigated. Here, we report 2 individuals of red-legged seriemas (Cariama cristata) infected with 2 different lineages of Plasmodium huffi, one of them exhibiting potential malarial-compatible tissue lesions in the spleen, liver, brain and lungs, alongside molecular confirmation of parasite presence in the spleen. Previously classified as specific

Assessment of poultry egg liking scores using sighted and blind people.

BACKGROUND: Of the 18 043 bird species, the eggs of only hen and quail are generally available to consumers. Thus people are deprived of the opportunity to benefit from the huge diversity of eggs offered by nature. Poultry eggs can vary in their color of albumen and yolk, smell, taste and texture. In this study, sighted and blind people were employed for sensory evaluation with the aim of determining the preferences of consumers toward hard-boiled and scrambled eggs of different species of birds, and whether the appearance of these eggs has an effect on the perception of other sensory impressi

Renal trematode infection in wild birds: histopathological, morphological, and molecular aspects.

Paratanaisia are eucotylidae digeneans that affect the upper urinary tract of birds. This genus contains three species (Paratanaisia bragai, P. robusta, and P. confusa) with similar morphological features. Macroscopic and microscopic damage caused by these parasites ranges from the irrelevant to significant lesions. This study aimed to describe the histological, morphological, and molecular features of the renal tissues and parasite specimens obtained from naturally infected free-ranging and captive wild birds in Brazil. Histopathological evaluations were performed on 103 slides containing kid

Artificial insemination with liquid-stored and fresh semen in grey partridge (Perdix perdix L.).

European populations of the grey partridge (Perdix perdix L.) have declined rapidly, necessitating captive breeding programs to supplement wild populations. Artificial insemination could optimize these reproductive efforts, yet specific protocols are lacking. This study evaluated the effects of short-term liquid storage (24 h at 5 °C in EK and Lake extenders) on selected semen quality parameters and determined how extender type and sperm dose affects fertility level. Semen was collected from 15 males, pooled, diluted 1:2 and evaluated in vitro at 0 h and after 24 h of storage. Sperm motility a

Dietary inclusion of Hermetia illucens larvae meal modifies caecal microbiota diversity and composition in barbary partridges (Alectoris barbara).

In the present study, we examined the influence of the dietary inclusion of black soldier fly (BSF) larvae meal on the diversity and composition of the bacterial community in the caecum of Barbary partridges (Alectoris barbara). A total of 54 partridges were divided equally into three treatment groups. The control group (C) received a diet containing corn-soybean meals and the two experimental groups received diets in which soybean meal protein was partially substituted with BSF larvae meal at proportions of 25% (H25) and 50% (H50). The bacterial community of the caecal samples was analysed in

The Release of Non-Native Gamebirds Is Associated With Amplified Zoonotic Disease Risk.

Spillback-where non-native species increase native pathogen prevalence-is potentially an important mechanism by which non-natives contribute to zoonotic disease emergence. However, spillback has not yet been directly demonstrated because it is difficult to disentangle from confounding factors which correlate with non-native species abundance and native pathogen prevalence. Here, we capitalise on replicated, quasi-experimental releases of non-native pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) to compare vector abundance and native pathogen prevalence between sites with similar local conditions but differen

WEST NILE VIRUS EXPOSURE AND INFECTION AMONG HUNTER-HARVESTED RUFFED GROUSE (BONASA UMBELLUS) COHORTS IN A STABLE POPULATION.

West Nile virus (WNV) was introduced to North America two decades ago, but for many species, including Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus), the effects of WNV on individuals and populations remain poorly understood. Recent studies suggest the effect of WNV on Ruffed Grouse might vary among geographic regions, depending on habitat conditions. We studied WNV in Minnesota, US, during 2018-19, in a region known to have abundant Ruffed Grouse habitat and a population cycling around a stable long-term average. We worked with cooperating hunters to collect hearts, feathers, and blood on filter strips fro

An Uncommon Case of Trueperella pyogenes Infection in an Adult Backyard Rooster and a Retrospective Study; 2000-20.

Trueperella pyogenes is an opportunistic Gram-positive bacterium that induces purulent lesions and abscesses in cattle, small ruminants, and swine. In birds, T. pyogenes infections have been linked to lameness and osteomyelitis in turkeys (Phasianidae) and hepatic fibriscess in turkeys and pigeons (Columbidae). An 18-mo-old backyard rooster with a history of progressive emaciation was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory system. At necropsy, unusual numerous miliary granulomas were identified, primarily in the spleen, but granulomas were also observed in

Molecular characterization and pathogenicity of a fowl adenovirus serotype 4 isolated from peacocks associated with hydropericardium hepatitis syndrome.

In September 2019, a highly prevalent infectious disease caused severe hydropericardium hepatitis syndrome (HHS) in a peacock farm in Central China. The disease showed high mortality of 78.6% in 28-42 day-old peacocks. In this study, one strain of highly pathogenic fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) was isolated from peacocks and designated as HN19. Molecular characterization of amino acid revealed that HN19 contains the same deletions as the dominate strains in chickens in China recently. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that HN19 showed higher homology with other FAdV-4 strains isolated from
