Previous electrophysiological studies implicate both alpha (8-12 Hz) and gamma (>30 Hz) neural oscillations in the mechanisms of selective attention. Here, participants preformed two separate visual attention tasks, one endogenous and one exogenous, while transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), at 10 Hz, 40 Hz, or sham, was applied to the right parietal lobe. Our results provide new evidence for the roles of gamma and alpha oscillations in voluntary versus involuntary shifts of attention. Gamma (40 Hz) stimulation resulted in improved disengagement from invalidly cued targets in t

Neural control differs between position- and force-control tasks as evident from divergent effects of fatigue and pain. Unlike force-control tasks, position-control tasks focus on a postural goal to maintain a joint angle. Cortical involvement is suggested to be less during postural control, but whether this differs between position- and force-control paradigms remains unclear. Coherence estimates the functional communication between spatially distinct active regions within the cortex (cortico-cortical coherence; CCC) and between the cortex and muscles (corticomuscular coherence; CMC). We inve

The observation of Trypanosomes in patients affected by sleeping sickness has been reported in 1903 by Aldo Castellani. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of this discovery, we here present the findings recently obtained in and experimental model of African trypanosomiasis in the rat. The molecular and cellular mechanisms of the interplay between the parasite and the host have been largely clarified: a bidirectional signalling occurs between trypanosomes and CD8+ T cells of the host animal. This new pathogenetic mechanism of infection involves a lymphocyte triggering factor released by th

Since 1972, 102 patients with malignant tumours of low radiosensibility were treated with a combined local hyperthermia-gamma-rays irradiation. Most of the tumours grew superficially and half deeply. Results were analysed with regard to tumour regression, local recurrence and frequency of metastases after treatment. Surprisingly good tumour regression, a low local recurrence rate (11%) and no enhancement of distant metastases were found. Treatment rhythms hat not to be altered. Tissue reactions were extremely low. The combined hyperthermia-radiation treatment has its advantages especially, whe

The correlations between the indicators of cerebral hemodynamics and electrical activity in children with impaired motor skills of central origin (children with cerebral palsy) were investigated. There is established a high number of links between indicators of rheoencephalogram (REG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) in the left cerebral hemisphere than in the right. In frontomastoidal allocation 19 correlations and in occipitomastoidal - 59 links. We suppose that poor circulation in vertebroplasty-basilar system leads to the defeat of the brain stem, which, with afferent pathways of the reticul

We spend approximately one-third of our lives asleep. This behavioral state plays a pivotal role in protecting physical and mental health. A lack of sleep has negative consequences on the brain and behavior. Electrophysiological studies have shown that gamma oscillations are involved in sleep-wake processes. However, gamma peak frequency and power characteristics remain unclear during a night of sleep deprivation. Forty-four (44) healthy young adults were enrolled in this EEG study. Participants were randomly assigned to a rested control group (RC: n = 22, 13 female) or a night of sleep depriv

Nonpharmaceutical approaches based on gamma entrainment using sensory stimuli (GENUS) have shown promise in reducing Alzheimer's disease pathology in mouse models. While human studies remain limited, GENUS has been shown to alleviate aspects of neurodegeneration in patients with Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we analyze intracranial EEG data from 490 contacts across eleven patients with refractory epilepsy in response to three visual stimulation conditions. We find that 40 Hz visual stimulation successfully entrains neural activity beyond early visual areas, including the hippocampus and

Gamma oscillations (30-100 Hz), generated by the synchronized firing of neurons, play a crucial role in memory storage and retrieval. Non-invasive 40 Hz flickering light stimulation (FLS) has been shown to induce gamma oscillations, leading to beneficial effects including microglial activation, increased vascularization, and enhanced glymphatic clearance. These effects correlate with reduced amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, recent studies in mouse models report contradictory findings, challenging the efficacy of 40 Hz FLS in generating widespread

Expectancy theory of hypnosis posits that any procedure can serve as a hypnotic induction provided it is labeled as "hypnosis". The present study explored this hypothesis by contrasting the effects of two conventional and two unconventional (placebo) hypnotic inductions on hypnotic experiences and electrophysiological correlates. In a 2 × 2 balanced placebo design, all participants were exposed to four conditions: conventional induction labeled as "hypnosis", conventional induction labeled as "control", unconventional induction labeled as "hypnosis", and unconventional induction labeled as "co

High Gamma Band (HGB) and Slow Wave Oscillations (SWOs) have been identified as significant features in movement neurophysiology. HGB reflects local neuronal activity, while SWOs inform on the temporal characteristics of movement, especially during repetitive tasks. However, to date, they have mostly been studied separately, leaving details on their interaction largely unknown. Here, we looked at Phase Amplitude Coupling (PAC) to assess interactions between SWO phase and HGB power. We use a publicly-available electrocorticography (ECoG) dataset recorded during repetitive motor execution (ME) a

The last decades have witnessed huge efforts devoted to deciphering the pathological mechanisms underlying Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and to testing new drugs, with the recent FDA approval of two anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies for AD treatment. Beyond these drug-based experimentations, a number of pre-clinical and clinical trials are exploring the benefits of alternative treatments, such as non-invasive stimulation techniques on AD neuropathology and symptoms. Among the different non-invasive brain stimulation approaches, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is gaining particu

The pursuit of a physiological indicator of noxious stimulation is desirable as it has the potential to provide mechanistic information regarding acute pain and may ultimately improve pain management strategies. Currently, there are no specific neurophysiological markers of pain to evaluate treatments. Recent attempts to identify neural correlates of pain have focused on different neuroimaging modalities. The purpose of this review is to discuss common neuroimaging techniques and findings thus far.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) dynamically adjusts stimulation parameters according to patient needs. We recently showed that chronic aDBS utilizing invasive neural signals for feedback control is superior to conventional DBS (cDBS) during normal daily life in a 2-month trial. The stability of aDBS over longer periods remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of aDBS on motor symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in one individual with Parkinson's disease over 8 months.
METHODS: We used stimulation-entrained cortical gamma oscillations as a control signal for aDBS i

Temporal attention is the concentration of perceptual resources at a specific point in time, which can help individuals get prepared to improve their behavioral performance, whereas the neural mechanism of temporal attention is yet to be well understood. In this study, behavioral measurement, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and electroencephalography (EEG) were combined to explore the effects of task performance and whole-brain functional connectivities (FCs) during temporal attention with different time intervals after applying anodal and sham tDCS over the right posterior par

The cerebellum plays an important role in maintaining balance, posture control, muscle tone, and lower limb coordination in healthy individuals and stroke patients. At the same time, the relationship between cerebellum and motor learning has been widely concerned in recent years. Due to the relatively intact structure preservation and high plasticity after supratentorial stroke, non-invasive neuromodulation targeting the cerebellum is increasingly used to treat abnormal gait in stroke patients. The gamma frequency of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is commonly used to impro

BACKGROUND: It is known that proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis are significantly reduced by 40 Hz entrainment in mice. If this were to translate to humans, verifying that such a light stimulus can induce a 40 Hz entrainment response in humans and harnessing insights from these case studies could be one step in the development of a multisensory device to prevent and treat AD.
OBJECTIVE: Verify the inducement of a 40 Hz response in the human brain by a 40 Hz light stimulus and obtain insights that could potentially aid in the development of a multisensory device for

Whereas the neurophysiology of respiration has traditionally focused on automatic brain stem processes, higher brain mechanisms underlying the cognitive aspects of breathing are gaining increasing interest. Therapeutic techniques have used conscious control and awareness of breathing for millennia with little understanding of the mechanisms underlying their efficacy. Using direct intracranial recordings in humans, we correlated cortical and limbic neuronal activity as measured by the intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) with the breathing cycle. We show this to be the direct result of neur

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is pathologically characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation, which induces Aβ-dependent neuronal dysfunctions. We focused on the early-stage disease progression and examined the neuronal network functioning in the 5xFAD mice. The simultaneous intracranial recordings were obtained from the hippocampal perforant path (PP) and the dentate gyrus (DG). Concomitant to Aβ accumulation, theta power was strongly attenuated in the PP and DG regions of 5xFAD mice compared to those in nontransgenic littermates. For either theta rhythm or gamma oscillation, the phase synchroniza

Episodic autobiographical memory (EAM) is a complex cognitive function that emerges from the coordination of specific and distant brain regions. Specific brain rhythms, namely theta and gamma oscillations and their synchronization, are thought of as putative mechanisms enabling EAM. Yet, the mechanisms of inter-regional interaction in the EAM network remain unclear in humans at the whole brain level. To investigate this, we analyzed EEG recordings of participants instructed to retrieve autobiographical episodes. EEG recordings were projected in the source space, and time-courses of atlas-based
