Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone) is a synthetic cathinone designer drug that alters pre-synaptic dopamine (DA) activity like many psychostimulants. However, little is known about the post-synaptic dopaminergic impacts of mephedrone. The neuropeptide neurotensin (NT) provides inhibitory feedback for basal ganglia and limbic DA pathways, and post-synaptic D1 -like and D2 -like receptor activity affects NT tissue levels. This study evaluated how mephedrone alters basal ganglia and limbic system NT content and the role of NT receptor activation in drug consumption behavior. Four 25 mg/kg injecti

Functional changes in basal ganglia circuitry are responsible for the major clinical features of Parkinson's disease (PD). Current models of basal ganglia circuitry can only partially explain the cardinal symptoms in PD. We used functional MRI to investigate the causal connectivity of basal ganglia networks from the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) in PD in the movement and resting state. In controls, SNc activity predicted increased activity in the supplementary motor area, the default mode network, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, but, in patients, activity predicted decreases in the

Nestin labels neuroepithelial stem cells and endothelial cells in newly formed blood vessels. The aim of the study was to investigate the immunolocalization of nestin in human adult trigeminal ganglia. Autopsy samples from eight human adult cadavers were paraffin embedded, and immunostained with anti-nestin antibody. Satellite glial cells (SGCs) and intraganglionic microvessels were positively labeled with nestin, which is usually expressed in endothelial cells of newly formed blood vessels. Nestin-positive SGCs have been previously reported in rat trigeminal ganglia. Our study is the first to

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChR) are ligand-gated cation channels that are present throughout the nervous system. The ganglionic (alpha3-type) neuronal AChR mediates fast synaptic transmission in sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric autonomic ganglia. Autonomic ganglia are an important site of neural integration and regulation of autonomic reflexes. Impaired cholinergic ganglionic synaptic transmission is one important cause of autonomic failure. Ganglionic AChR antibodies are found in many patients with autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy (AAG). These antibodies recognize the alph

A patient with a bilateral striatal lesion secondary to anoxia presented reflex blepharospasm associated with parkinsonism and dystonia in the limbs. The blink reflex excitability curve was enhanced and the R-2 response prolonged as in patients with essential blepharospasm. The findings in this patient support the notion that blepharospasm may be secondary to basal ganglia dysfunction through abnormal facilitation of reticular formation neurons controlling facial nucleus motoneuron excitability.

Idiopathic basal ganglia calcification is a syndrome consisting of bilateral basal ganglia calcifications, neuropsychiatric abnormalities, disturbances of movement, and normal calcium and phosphorus metabolism. The best described neuropsychiatric alterations are dementia and an organic psychosis. Organic mood disorder has been reported less often, and mania secondary to idiopathic basal ganglia calcification has not been noted previously. The authors describe five patients with idiopathic basal ganglia calcification and organic mood changes, including one patient with secondary mania. Symptoms

Surgical disruption of the small (approximately 0.7 x 1.0 cm) epicardial fat pad situated at the junction of the inferior vena cava (IVC) and inferior surface of the left atrium (ILA) interrupts both right and left vagal input to the atrioventricular nodal (AVN) region of the canine heart. This intervention eliminates AV block during supramaximal stimulation of both cervical vagi, without interfering with sinus bradycardia normally associated with sinoatrial nodal (SAN) suppression. Independent modulation of SAN and AVN activities by the parasympathetic system is thereby revealed. Histology of

Four cases of basal ganglia infarction demonstrated by radionuclide brain imaging are presented. Bilateral basal ganglia infarctions in two patients were probably related to methanol intoxication and meningoencephalitis, and unilateral basal ganglia infarctions in two other patients were presumably due to cerebral atherosclerosis and/or hypertension. Various causes and mechanisms of basal ganglia infarction as well as positive findings of radionuclide brain imaging are briefly reviewed.

A 27-year-old man had limb weakness, short stature, neurosensory hearing loss, seizures, mild peripheral neuropathy, neurogenic bladder, elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein content, primary lactic acidemia, and basal ganglia calcification. Muscle biopsy revealed numerous ragged-red fibers. On electronmicroscopy there were mitochondrial alterations, including many intramitochondrial inclusions. The mother of the patient had Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome, a combination of rare disorders in the same family that has not been previously described.

The term "basal ganglia" refers to a group of interconnected subcortical nuclei engaged in motor planning and movement initiation, executive functions, behaviors, and emotions. Dopamine released from the substantia nigra is the underlying driving force keeping the basal ganglia network under proper equilibrium and, indeed, reduction of dopamine levels triggers basal ganglia dysfunction, setting the groundwork for several movement disorders. The canonical basal ganglia model has been instrumental for most of our current understanding of the normal and pathological functioning of this subcortica

Background: Hypnotizability is a psychophysiological trait measured by standardized scales whose scores indicate the proneness to modify perception, memory, and behavior according to specific suggestions, and to experience the hypnotic state. Hypnotizability exhibits physiological and behavioral correlates in the ordinary state of consciousness and brain morphological peculiarities. Among them, a reduced Grey Matter volume (GMV) of the insula and cerebellar lobules IV-VI has been observed in high hypnotizable individuals (highs) compared to low hypnotizables (lows). Theoretically, these struct

Traumatic Basal Ganglia Hemorrhage has been rarely reported in the pediatric population. This case describes a 22 month old male who suffered a closed head injury following a motor vehicle accident and subsequently developed a basal ganglia hemorrhage. Unilateral basal ganglia hemorrhage with associated diffuse axonal injury in the corpus callosum and the grey white matter interface were visualized in magnetic resonance imaging and series of computed tomography. The patient was managed conservatively and discharged to a rehabilitation facility with minimal deficits. In summary, this case discu

The dorsal root ganglion (DRG) contains all primary sensory neurons, but its functional role in somatosensory and pain processing remains unclear. Recently, MR imaging techniques have been developed for objective in vivo observation of the DRG. In particular, DRG MR imaging endpoints such as DRG volume and DRG T2w signal are emerging as biomarkers with initial evidence of meaningful correlations with biochemical and genetic parameters as well as neuropathic pain as clinically relevant applications. However, the future validation and use of these novel imaging biomarkers critically depends on t

The human brain is a constructive organ. It generates predictions to modulate its functioning and continuously adapts to a dynamic environment. Increasingly, the temporal dimension of motor and non-motor behaviour is recognised as a key component of this predictive bias. Nevertheless, the intricate interplay of the neural mechanisms that encode, decode and evaluate temporal information to give rise to a sense of time and control over sensorimotor timing remains largely elusive. Among several brain systems, the basal ganglia have been consistently linked to interval- and beat-based timing opera

The contralateral interhemispheric approach provides a robust path into the mesial frontal lobe and basal ganglia structures.1 The use of gravity to retract the dominant frontal lobe allows the surgeon to avoid injury caused by exposure of the dominant hemisphere. The transfalcine corridor, however, is long and often not well illuminated, necessitating the use of lighted instruments. Within the path of approach lie the anterior cerebral arteries, which must be carefully dissected and preserved. Upon opening the falx, the entire mesial frontal lobe and deep basal ganglia structures can be readi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Basal ganglia calcifications (BGC), a form of vascular calcification, are a common brain computed tomography (CT) finding. We investigated whether BGC are associated with cognitive function and examined the association between vascular risk factors and BGC.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients who visited a memory clinic of a Dutch general hospital between April 2009 and April 2015 were included. The patients underwent a standard diagnostic work up including cognitive tests (Cambridge Cognitive Examination, including the Mini Mental State Examination) and brain CT. Vascular

A 76-year-old man presented to the hospital with intermittent dizziness, memory impairment and jerky movements. Evaluation revealed them to be faciobrachial dystonic seizures and antibodies to voltage-gated potassium channel complexes were found. He was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone and rituximab, and made a remarkable recovery. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was normal, although positron emission tomography - computed tomography showed striking basal ganglia changes.
