How are vegetable gardens used, managed and resourced in Australian primary schools? A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: School gardens are an effective strategy to increase food literacy and to promote healthy eating and environmental health. However, barriers such as inadequate funding, time and training mean that many schools are not able to implement or properly utilise a school garden program. The aim of this study was to examine how school gardens are used, managed, and resourced in Australian primary schools. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was used, with 111 Australian primary school staff completing an online survey and 13 Victorian primary school teachers participating in a one-on-one int

Avian Influenza Screening in Captive Wild Birds and Biosecurity Appraisal of Zoological Gardens in Southwestern Nigeria.

Avian influenza (AI) is a severe respiratory disease affecting wild and domestic birds globally. There is currently no approved vaccine for AI control in Nigeria. Therefore, biosecurity measures remain the primary preventive strategy. However, there is limited information on the AI carrier status of captive wild birds and the implementation of biosecurity programs (BPs) in zoological gardens across the country. This study aimed to screen captive wild birds for AI and evaluate the BPs in selected zoological gardens in southwestern Nigeria. Using a cross-sectional approach, cloacal swabs and fre

CTX-M-1 and CTX-M-15-producing Escherichia coli in dog faeces from public gardens.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli are increasingly reported in dogs. The objective of this study was to provide data on the prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in dog faecal deposits in public gardens. RESULTS: A total of 209 faecal deposits collected in nine public gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark were screened by selective enrichment followed by plating on MacConkey agar supplemented with cefotaxime. Presumptive ESBL-producing E. coli were confirmed by MALDI-TOF MS and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of common cefotaxime resistance d

Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in captive non-human primates of twenty-four zoological gardens in China.

Captive primates are susceptible to gastrointestinal (GIT) parasitic infections, which are often zoonotic and can contribute to morbidity and mortality. Fecal samples were examined by the means of direct smear, fecal flotation, fecal sedimentation, and fecal cultures. Of 26.51% (317/1196) of the captive primates were diagnosed gastrointestinal parasitic infections. Trichuris spp. were the most predominant in the primates, while Entamoeba spp. were the most prevalent in Old World monkeys (P < 0.05). These preliminary data will improve the management of captive primates and the safety of animal

Diversity and Plasticity of Hydraulic Traits Across a Relative Moisture Supply Gradient: Results From Multiple Common Gardens.

Maintaining cellular hydration is essential for plant metabolic activity and carbon gain. Plants typically maintain hydration through efficiency of water transport networks, the ability to avoid network disruption, and retention of water via accumulation of osmotica. Given their global domain and their enduring presence across geological eras, plants have evolved with large variations in moisture supply across geographic and temporal space, notably via trait adaptation and plasticity. We quantified plastic and genetically fixed variation in 6 key hydraulic traits across 10 Eucalyptus species i

Local and Landscape Drivers of Carabid Activity, Species Richness, and Traits in Urban Gardens in Coastal California.

Urban ecosystems, as mosaics of residential, industrial, commercial, and agricultural land, present challenges for species survival due to impervious surface, degradation, fragmentation, and modification of natural habitat, pollution, and introduced species. Some urban habitats, such as community gardens, support biodiversity and promote ecosystem services. In gardens, local factors (e.g., vegetation, groundcover) and landscape surroundings (e.g., agriculture, built or impervious cover) may influence species abundance, richness, and functional traits that are present. We examined which local a

[Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in bromeliads grown in the Bauru Municipal Botanical Gardens, São Paulo, Brazil].

The aim of this study was to observe the occurrence of mosquito larvae, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, in the tanks and axillae of bromeliads at the Bauru Municipal Botanical Gardens, São Paulo, Brazil, highlighting the epidemiological implications for the use of these plants. The majority of the larvae belonged to mosquitos from genus Culex, with only occasional findings of A. aegypti and A. albopictus. The use of screens for protection of the plants, exposure to sunlight, and larger amounts of water in the tanks may have influenced the occurrence and grouping of larvae.

A Case of Solar Maculopathy Secondary to Reflected Sunlight During Garden Tiling.

Here, we present a rare case of solar maculopathy associated with repeated exposure to reflected sunlight without sunglasses during garden tiling. A 64-year-old woman presented with visual field defects during a comprehensive medical checkup and was referred to our hospital three years ago. She noticed mildly blurred vision and photophobia in both eyes. Fundus autofluorescence revealed ring-shaped hyperfluorescent lesions surrounding the fovea, and optical coherence tomography revealed disruption of the ellipsoid zones in the corresponding areas. Electroretinography showed no abnormalities, an

Evidence-Based Gardening: Using Palliative Approaches to Cure Complex Wounds.

Complex wounds are commonly thought to require aggressive surgical intervention to achieve healing. However, optimal healing results can often be achieved when greater emphasis is placed on optimizing patient factors prior to any surgical intervention. A retrospective review was performed of pressure ulcers and complex wound cases treated over 5 years at the Yale New Haven Wound Center. Optimal healing including clinical resolution of osteomyelitis and improved scarring was achieved when patient factors, such as glucose control and nutrition, were optimized. Surgical intervention can be more e
