Progress in gut hormone research has considerably increased our knowledge in gastrointestinal physiology. However, this knowledge has not yet helped the understanding of common gastrointestinal diseases. A pathophysiological role of gut hormones has been established only for rare conditions This is because the clinical significance of the gut hormones is difficult to evaluate. Morphological and biochemical methods used in classical endocrinology can rarely be applied to gastrointestinal endocrinology because of the special design of the gut hormone system. Also gut hormones and autonomous nerv

Since the discovery of the first gastrointestinal hormones it has been intriguing to think that these defined chemical messengers may also influence the growth of tumors. Today, treatment with sex-hormones is well documented--and used in clinical practice--in prostatic (1,2), breast (3), endometrial, and ovarian carcinoma (4). Hormonal therapy (progesterone) has also been tried with some success in renal carcinoma (5,6). Nevertheless, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract--colorectal, liver, stomach, and pancreatic, carcinoma, which constitute 25 percent of all malignancies in Scandinavia--are

The somatotropic axis regulates growth of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In addition, colostrum feeding and glucocorticoids affect maturation of the GIT around birth in mammals. We have measured mRNA levels of members of the somatotropic axis to test the hypothesis that colostrum intake and dexamethasone treatment affect respective gene expression in the GIT. Calves were fed either colostrum or an isoenergetic milk-based formula, and in each feeding group, half of the calves were treated with dexamethasone (DEXA; 30 microg/kg body weight per day). Individual parameters of the somatotropic a

The gastrointestinal tract has a crucial role in the control of energy homeostasis through its role in the digestion, absorption, and assimilation of ingested nutrients. Furthermore, signals from the gastrointestinal tract are important regulators of gut motility and satiety, both of which have implications for the long-term control of body weight. Among the specialized cell types in the gastrointestinal mucosa, enteroendocrine cells have important roles in regulating energy intake and glucose homeostasis through their actions on peripheral target organs, including the endocrine pancreas. This

It is now well established that communication among the enteric nerves, hormones, and neuropeptides plays a role in the pathogenesis of infectious gastrointestinal conditions. The results of several studies suggest that enteric nerves and hormones modulate important gastrointestinal functions such as intestinal motility and transport, intestinal permeability, fluid secretion, and inflammation in response to infectious agents. During the past year several gut-brain peptides, including substance P, neurotensin, and galanin, emerged as important mediators in the development and progress of intest

Twenty years of research established amylin as an important control of energy homeostasis. Amylin controls nutrient and energy fluxes by reducing energy intake, by modulating nutrient utilization via an inhibition of postprandial glucagon secretion and by increasing energy disposal via a prevention of compensatory decreases of energy expenditure in weight reduced individuals. Like many other gastrointestinal hormones, amylin is secreted in response to meals and it reduces eating by promoting meal-ending satiation. Not surprisingly, amylin interacts with many of these hormones to control eating

BACKGROUND: Spleen deficiency syndrome (SDS) is associated with elevated inflammatory factors and dysregulation of gastrointestinal motility hormones and intestinal microbiota. Qushi decoction (QD), a traditional formula, has not been reported using modern scientific research methods for changes in its probiotic fermented QD (FQD) composition and its potential mechanisms to alleviate SDS. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the splenic protection of FQD in SDS rats by modulating gastrointestinal motility hormones and intestinal microbiota.
RESULTS: The results showed that FQD

Postprandial increases in gastrointestinal hormones are associated with reduced energy intake, partially through direct effects on the brain. However, it remains unknown whether the fasting levels of gastrointestinal hormones are associated with altered brain activity in response to visual food stimuli. We therefore performed a whole-brain regression cross-sectional analysis to assess the association between fasting brain activations according to functional magnetic resonance imaging, performed during viewing of highly desirable versus less desirable food images, with fasting levels of five ga

It is known that gastrointestinal microbiota, probiotics and heat-killed microbes can regulate intestinal immunity; however, their effect on the secretion of gastrointestinal hormones is unclear. The secretion of gastrointestinal hormones can be mediated by the elevation of intracellular Ca2+ concentration, suggesting that these hormones may act through common mechanisms. We have previously shown that heat-killed Lactobacillus brevis SBC8803 (hk-SBC8803) induced the secretion of serotonin and elevated intracellular Ca2+ concentration in serotonin-producing RIN-14B cells, suggesting that hk-SBC

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The gastrointestinal tract acts as an endocrine organ, releasing hormones that regulate glucose homeostasis, appetite, energy expenditure, and gastrointestinal motility. In type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obesity, this finely tuned hormonal system is disrupted, contributing to metabolic dysfunction. This review summarizes current evidence on fasting and postprandial responses to mixed-meal tests (MMT) and oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) of proglucagon-derived peptides (PGDPs), orexigenic and anorexigenic hormones, and less frequently studied gastrointestinal peptides in indiv

In adult coeliac sprue patients, intraduodenal instillation of a hypertonic glucose-citric acid solution may release gastrointestinal hormones of the proximal (secretin, gastric inhibitory polypeptide, motilin) and distal (enteroglucagon, neurotensin) small intestine and, indirectly, of the pancreas (glucagon, insulin, pancreatic polypeptide). Characteristic plasma hormone profiles can be measured radioimmunologically. The reduced secretin response reflects most sensitively the impaired function of the small intestine. Exposure of the distal small bowel to greater nutrient loads leads to marke

Both glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid hormones are known to be involved in the physiology and pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal tract. Studies on the mechanism of action of steroid hormones indicate an initial obligatory step of binding to stereospecific receptor proteins in the cytoplasm of target tissue cells. Mucosal cells from the gastrointestinal tract of adrenalectomized, gonadectomized rats contain cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors which bind tritiated dexamethasone with an affinity (Kdiss4C) of approximately 10(-8)M. The concentration of glucocorticoid receptors per unit c

Therapy with thyroid hormones normally is restricted to substitution therapy of patients with primary or secondary hypothyroidism. Typically, thyroid hormones are given orally. There are few indications for intravenous use of thyroid hormones. Indications for parenteral application are insufficient resorption of oral medications due to alterations of the gastrointestinal tract, partial or total loss of consciousness, sedation in the intensive care unit or shock. In almost all cases, levothyroxine is the therapy of choice including congenital hypothyroidism. In preterm infants with an altered t

Both the stomach and small intestine play important roles in sensing the arrival of a meal, and its physico-chemical characteristics, in the gastrointestinal lumen. The presence of a meal in the stomach provides a distension stimulus, and, as the meal empties into the small intestine, nutrients interact with small intestinal receptors, initiating the release of gut hormones, associated with feedback regulation of gastrointestinal functions, including gut motility, and signaling to the central nervous system, modulating eating behaviours, including energy intake. Lipid appears to have particula

The effects of hormones on human adipose tissue are reviewed with respect to the pathogenesis, prevention and therapy of obesity. Insulin. The insulin-resistance in the obese is associated with a decrease of the number of insulin receptor sites, which is likely to be secondary to increased insulin levels. Catecholamines. Human adipose tissue contains alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. Alterations in the relation of alpha- and beta-adrenergic responsiveness may be important in the pathogenesis of regional forms of obesity. Gastrointestinal hormones. As opposed to adipose tissue of other spec

This is a review of current information concerning the role of hormones and the autonomic nervous system in the control of exocrine secretions of the pancreas. A greater emphasis has been placed on the role of hormones because of information accumulated during the last several years. With the development of radioimmunoassay techniques, it is now possible to correlate circulating hormone concentrations with biological function. The role of hormones has been discussed with the framework of the secretin-glucagon family, the cholecystokinin-gastrin family, and other proposed gastrointestinal hormo

BACKGROUND: Patients with psoriasis have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The gastrointestinal system plays a major role in normal glucose metabolism, and in healthy individuals, postprandial insulin secretion is largely mediated by the gut incretin hormones. This potentiation is termed the incretin effect and is reduced in type 2 diabetes. The impact of psoriasis on gastrointestinal factors involved in glucose metabolism has not previously been examined.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the incretin effect, gastrointestinal-mediated glucose disposal (GIGD) and/or secretion of glucagon

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a food-borne pathogen associated with serious pregnancy complications, including miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, neonatal sepsis, and meningitis. Although Lm infection within the gastrointestinal tract is well studied, little is known about the influence sex hormones may have on listeriosis. Estradiol-17beta and progesterone not only have receptors within the gastrointestinal tract but are significantly increased during pregnancy. The presence of these hormones may play a role in susceptibility to listeriosis during pregnancy. Caco-2 cell monolayers were

Probiotics are live organisms that are primarily used to improve gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, lactose intolerance, and to inhibit the excessive proliferation of pathogenic intestinal bacteria. However, recent studies have suggested that probiotics could have beneficial effects beyond gastrointestinal health, as they were found to improve certain metabolic disorders such as hypertension. Hypertension is caused by various factors and the predominant causes include an increase in cholesterol levels, incidence of diabetes, inconsistent modula

Dumping syndrome is a common and debilitating complication of upper gastrointestinal surgery. Accelerated gastric emptying and dysregulated secretion of gastrointestinal (GI) hormones are involved in its pathophysiology. Pasireotide, a novel somatostatin analogue, improved dumping in a phase-2 study. Preliminary data suggest that the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue liraglutide can also improve dumping. Short bowel syndrome is the most common cause of intestinal failure and involves not only a loss of mucosal absorptive area but also hypersecretion and accelerated transit. GLP-2 is the
