Oral iron preparations for iron deficiency anemia have major side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, which are gastrointestinal symptoms widely known to occur with gastrointestinal motility disorders. However, it is unclear whether these symptoms are associated with gastrointestinal motility. This study aimed to explore the correlation between oral iron preparations that cause nausea and vomiting with gastrointestinal motility. Sodium ferrous citrate (SFC), a common ingredient in iron preparations, was used in this study. Gastrointestinal motility in mice was measured using the 13C-octanoic

In Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice, gastrointestinal transit was measured in vivo and the neuromuscular function of longitudinal muscle strips of inflamed ileum and noninflamed gastric fundus was assessed in vitro. Eight weeks after infection, the ileal wall was acutely inflamed, as shown by a mucosal inflammatory infiltrate, leading to an increase in mucosal thickness, in myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and in interleukin (IL)-1beta production. At that time, both gastrointestinal transit and in vitro ileal contractility were normal. Twelve weeks after infection, chronic granulomatous inflam

Gastrointestinal motility and plasma PYY levels were investigated under chronic progressive large bowel obstruction in dogs. The obstruction device was applied around the descending colon at a laparotomy and gastrointestinal motility was recorded with strain gauge force transducers in the conscious state. Complete obstruction occurred at 26 days (21-33 days). The duration of postprandial interruption of motor complex (DIMC) in the antrum and duodenum were prolonged progressively, at partial obstruction (17.7 +/- 2.7 hr; p less than 0.05) and complete obstruction (23.0 +/- 4.0 hr; p less than 0

Wang et al provide preclinical evidence that specific traditional herbal formulas, like Pyeongwi-san, can improve gastrointestinal (GI) motility under stress. Pyeongwi-san enhances GI transit, boosts serotonin levels, restores short-chain fatty acid balance, and reduces inflammation. The clinical significance of this research is its potential for standardized herbal remedies for GI disorders, such as dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome. At the same time, using only male mice, a single dose regimen, and relatively small cohorts highlights the need for further validation, including sex-specif

BACKGROUND: Diabetic gastroenteropathy can cause significant diagnostic challenges. Still, it remains unknown if measures of extraintestinal autonomic function reflect diabetic gastroenteropathy. We aimed to assess the associations between (1) gastrointestinal symptoms and motility measures and (2) gastrointestinal symptoms/motility measures and extraintestinal autonomic markers.
METHODS: We included 81 persons with type 1 or type 2 diabetes (65% female, mean age 54) with gastrointestinal symptoms and autonomic neuropathy. The Gastroparesis Cardinal Symptom Index (GCSI) and the Gastrointestin

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are pacemaker cells of gastrointestinal motility that generate and transmit electrical slow waves to smooth muscle cells in the gut wall, thus inducing phasic contractions and coordinated peristalsis. Traditionally, tyrosine-protein kinase Kit (c-kit), also known as CD117 or mast/stem cell growth factor receptor, has been used as the primary marker of ICCs in pathology specimens. More recently, the Ca2+-activated chloride channel, anoctamin-1, has been introduced as a more specific marker of ICCs. Over the years, various gastrointestinal motility disorders ha

OBJECTIVE: Orthostatic intolerance (OI) and autonomic dysfunction (AD) are common in adolescents and young adults. Patients experience multisystem symptoms including gastrointestinal (GI), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), orthostatic hypotension (OH), or only symptoms of OI (SOI) without significant findings on 70-degree head-up tilt testing (HUT). We hypothesize that patients with POTS, OH, and SOI show differences in GI symptoms and motility test and that heart rate (HR) changes on HUT predict severity of GI dysmotility.
STUDY DESIGN: From medical records of patients (<18 y

Electroacupuncture (EA) or acupoint catgut embedding (ACE) plays a therapeutic role in functional dyspepsia (FD). Herein, we aimed to elucidate the influences of EA combined with ACE on gastrointestinal motility and gastrointestinal hormones in rats with FD. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into the control group, model group, EA group, ACE group, and EA + ACE group (n = 10). Except for the control group, the rats in all groups were modeled by combining neonatal iodoacetamide gastrogavage and modified tail-clamping stimulation. The rats were treated with different treatments according to th

The prokinetic cisapride, an important therapeutic option in functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, was withdrawn from the market 15 years ago due to rare severe side effects. Likewise in 2014, the use of metoclopramide (MCP) and domperidone in functional GI disorders (FGID) was restricted, consequently leaving a therapeutic gap in clinical practice. A systematic review revealed that the herbal medicinal product (HMP) STW 5 presents a therapeutic option equivalent to MCP and cisapride. STW 5 is the only HMP for which efficacy has been shown in randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs)

BACKGROUND: During the peak of the COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, care for patients with gastrointestinal motility and functional disorders was largely suspended. In the recovery phases of the pandemic, non-urgent medical care is resumed, but there is a lack of guidance for restarting and safely conducting motility and function testing. Breath tests and insertion of manometry and pH-monitoring probes carry a risk of SARS-CoV-2 spread through droplet formation.
METHODS: A panel of experts from the European Society for Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) evaluated emerging

BACKGROUND: To investigate the changes and predictive factors of gastrointestinal (GI) motility in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).
METHODS: A total of 118 patients with severe TBI were enrolled, and their GI motility index was monitored daily using ultrasound starting from the initiation of enteral nutrition. Monitoring was performed every 6 h for 5 consecutive days. A latent class growth model was applied to analyze and fit the trajectory of GI motility changes, and multiple logistic regression was used to identify predictive factors associated with different trajectories.

The misuse of anabolic androgenic steroid associated or not with physical workouts disrupts gastrointestinal (GI) function homeostasis. Our goal was to investigate the effects of nandrolone decanoate (ND) and moderate swimming on the GI transit of solid meals, GI motor contractility, and intestinal histology in rats. Male Wistar rats were allocated to four groups that received intramuscular injections of ND (5.0 mg/kg) or vehicle (60.0 µL) and were submitted or not to swimming sessions (60 min, 5% body weight overload) for 4 weeks. Gastric emptying, intestinal transit, in vitro GI contractilit

Symptoms related to abnormal gastrointestinal motility and function are common. Oropharyngeal and oesophageal dysphagia, heartburn, bloating, abdominal pain and alterations in bowel habits are among the most frequent reasons for seeking medical attention from internists or general practitioners and are also common reasons for referral to gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons. However, the nonspecific nature of gastrointestinal symptoms, the absence of a definitive diagnosis on routine investigations (such as endoscopy, radiology or blood tests) and the lack of specific treatments make di

The biology of H2 S is a still developing area of research and several biological functions have been recently attributed to this gaseous molecule in many physiological systems, including the cardiovascular, urogenital, respiratory, digestive and central nervous system (CNS). H2 S exerts anti-inflammatory effects and can be considered an endogenous mediator with potential effects on gastrointestinal motility. During the last few years, we have investigated the role of H2 S as a regulator of gastrointestinal motility using both animal and human tissues. The aim of the present work is to review

Gastroesophageal reflux and intestinal distension have been described in survivors of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Deficient enteric innervation demonstrated in experimental models is a likely explanation for these symptoms. This study aimed at further characterizing these anomalies and examining esophageal and intestinal motility in this condition. Pregnant rats received either nitrofen or vehicle on E9.5. Sections of E15, E18, and E21 esophagus and small bowel were stained for protein gene product 9.5, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) diaphorase (NADPHd), and ace

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response representing the leading cause of death in critically ill patients, mostly due to multiple organ failure. The gastrointestinal tract plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of sepsis-induced multiple organ failure through intestinal barrier dysfunction, bacterial translocation and ileus. In this review we address the role of the gastrointestinal tract, the mediators, cell types and transduction pathways involved, based on experimental data obtained from models of inflammation-induced ileus and (preliminary) clinical data. The complex interplay within
