Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and postprocedural nutritional deficiencies: results from a single center exploratory study.

Nutritional deficiencies following endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) are unknown. We retrospectively studied nutritional deficiencies in 20 patients who underwent ESG at our institution. No subjects had preprocedural anemia, whereas 22.2% (N = 2/9) developed anemia at 12 months. Vitamin D deficiency developed in one subject post-ESG. Vitamin A, E, C and magnesium deficiencies developed in 8.3% (N = 1/12), 18.2% (N = 2/11), 14.3% (N = 1/7) and 10% (N = 1/10) of subjects, respectively, at 12 months. Vitamin B12 and B6 deficiencies were detected in 12.5 and 14.3% of the subjects at baseline, h

[Evaluation of the results after 5 year from a vertical banded gastroplasty: our experience].

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: vertical banded gastroplasty (GPV) is the most frequently performed restrictive procedure for morbid obesity, but long-term follow-up is almost nonexistent. A poor outcome after GPV and a low quality of life has been reported. The aim of the study was to determine long-term outcome after 5 years follow-up. METHODS: 225 GPV were performed from 1995 to 2002. Patients were followed every month in the first three months, after 6 and 12 months, and subsequently every year. RESULTS: No mortality was observed. One gastric fistula, treated with medical therapy, was the single re

Gastroesophageal reflux in morbidly obese patients treated with gastric banding or vertical banded gastroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To compare gastric banding (GB) and vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) with respect to postsurgical gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and to investigate the role of preexisting hiatus hernia. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: GB and VBG have for a long time been used in the treatment of morbidly obese patients. The introduction of laparoscopic techniques has renewed the interest in these operations. The long-term results after GB have, however, been poor. VBG was suggested to have antireflux properties because it involves repositioning and retaining the gastroesophageal junction within the abdo

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty versus oral semaglutide for obesity: a real-world comparative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) and semaglutide are established therapies for obesity. However, comparative real-world data remain limited. We compared the effectiveness and safety of ESG versus oral semaglutide 14 mg in adults with obesity. METHODS: In a real-world retrospective comparative cohort study between January 2024 and April 2025, adults aged 18-65 years with body mass index (BMI) ≥30, or ≥27 kg/m2 with obesity-related comorbidity, treated with either ESG or oral semaglutide 14mg daily, and having 6-months' follow-up were included. Primary endpoint was percentage to

Position statement and guidelines about Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) also known as "Endo-sleeve".

IS ESG EFFECTIVE IN THE TREATMENT OF OBESITY AND ASSOCIATEDCOMORBIDITIES?: Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is more effective than lifestyle modifications alone for weight loss and improving obesity-related comorbidities. While it has less effect on weight loss compared to Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) in the short to medium term, it offers similar comorbidities resolution to LSG. IS ESG A SAFE PROCEDURE, AND WHAT ARE ITS RISKS?: The safety profile of ESG is consistently supported in the literature. Surgical complications after ESG, ranging from 1.5 to 2.3%, such as bleeding, perfo

Novel approach to endoluminal antral gastroplasty using a modified gastrostomy tube and laparoscopic stapler.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In this study we demonstrated a novel approach to endoluminal antral gastroplasty using a transgastric trocar (Endo-TAGSS, Shawnee, Kans, USA) and laparoscopic noncutting stapler. METHODS: This was a nonsurvival study performed successfully in 2 domestic pigs. After placement of the Endo-TAGSS device, a laparoscopic stapler was introduced through the trocar and used to place staples along the anterior wall, greater curvature, and posterior wall, resulting in imbrication and reduction of the gastric antrum. Postprocedure, a diagnostic necropsy was performed. RESULTS: The

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty - minimally invasive treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Adequate weight loss can lead to reduction in steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis in patients with obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We evaluated the role of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) in patients with obesity and NAFLD. METHODS: In this single-center prospective study, consecutive adult patients with NAFLD who underwent ESG between November 2018 and May 2019 were included. The primary outcome was the impact of ESG on hepatic parameters: change in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), hepatic steatosis index (HSI), NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS), fibrosis-

Effect of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty on gastric emptying, motility and hormones: a comparative prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) has gained global adoption but our understanding of its mechanism(s) of action and durability of efficacy is limited. We sought to determine changes in gastric emptying (GE), gastric motility (GM), hormones and eating behaviours after ESG. DESIGN: A priori-designed single-centre substudy of a large US randomised clinical trial, adults with obesity were randomised to ESG or lifestyle interventions (LS) alone. We measured GE, hormones and weight loss and assessed eating behaviours. In a subset of ESG patients, we assessed GM. The primary outcome w

Safety and Efficacy of Laparoscopic Vertical Clip Gastroplasty: Early Results of an Italian Multicenter Study.

PURPOSE: Sleeve gastrectomy, the most commonly performed bariatric surgery procedure, carries limitations both short term including postoperative complications such as hemorrhage and gastric fistula and long term such as weight regain and gastroesophageal reflux. A new procedure has been proposed to overcome many of these limitations: laparoscopic vertical clip gastroplasty (LVCG) with BariClip. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients were offered LVCG and enrolled for a feasibility study in two referral bariatric centers. Indication was given as for sleeve gastrectomy, after a multidisciplinar
