[Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: experience of three years].

UNLABELLED: Patients who are not able to eat do need tube feeding. The most preferred way of artificial enteral nutritional support is feeding via percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes. Head and neck cancer patients do represent a special group of patients needing a PEG. On the one hand at the time of admission to the hospital they are mainly undernourished. On the other hand the failure rate of placing a PEG is the highest among them. Furthermore in the perioperative period nasogastric tubes do cause a lot of complications in these settings. 188 PEG placements were carried out from

Radiological percutaneous gastrostomy placement for enteral feeding.

Many patients who are unable to swallow have normal intestinal absorption and therefore do not need expensive and potentially problematic parenteral nutrition. Long term nasogastric tubes are unpleasant and interfere with communications, thus a gastrostomy is often felt to be appropriate. Traditionally this has been inserted at laparotomy but recently, other less invasive techniques of insertion such as endoscopy have been used for placement. We describe three patients where a percutaneous gastrostomy was placed by a radiological technique that we feel deserves wider recognition. It is quicker

[Percutaneous gastrostomy. Personal experience in 137 cases].

Percutaneous gastrostomy is reported to be an effective alternative to total parenteral feeding or long-term nasogastric tube in the treatment of mechanical or functional dysphagia. The authors report their personal experience with 137 percutaneous gastrostomies performed on 98 men and 39 women from January 1986 through December 1993. All the maneuvers were performed under fluoroscopic guidance in the patients with head or neck cancer, neoplastic, vascular or post-traumatic neuropathy and upper GI tract cancer. To avoid left hepatic lobe trauma, percutaneous gastrostomy needs to be performed u

Temporary gastrostomy tubes in major gynecologic surgery.

Prophylactic, temporary tube gastrostomy was done in 39 patients having major gynecologic surgery. Patients who were thought to be at high risk for postoperative ileus had a Foley catheter inserted intraoperatively through the greater curvature of the stomach. The procedure was found to be technically easy, well tolerated by the patients, and clinically useful, since postsurgical ileus was prevented or treated without the local and respiratory ill effects of the commonly used nasogastric tube.

Percutaneous gastrostomy and gastroenterostomy: 2. Clinical experience.

This report describes the authors' initial experience with percutaneous gastrostomy (PG) and gastroenterostomy (PGE) in 40 patients. Indications for PG and PGE included alimentation (35 patients) and small bowel decompression (five). Seldinger technique with air distension of the stomach via a nasogastric tube (20 patients) is a simple method to insert small (7-9 French) and firm catheters; tube exchanges for larger and softer catheters often are necessary by this method (23 procedures in 17 patients). Coaxial trocar technique (19 patients) permits initial insertion of softer and often larger

Gastroesophageal reflux secondary to gastrostomy tube placement.

We evaluated five children with severe psychomotor retardation who developed frequent vomiting and poor weight gain after surgical placement of a feeding gastrostomy tube. Prolonged pH probe testing before surgery did not reveal notable gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Treatment with 12-hour gastrostomy tube feeding resulted in a marked reduction in vomiting; after one year of continuous feeding, all patients had achieved significant weight gain (mean, 44.0%). Esophageal manometrics and 24-hour pH probe testing before and at the end of the 12-month continuous-feeding period demonstrated low pres

Percutaneous gastrostomy: use of intragastric balloon support.

To facilitate catheter entrance into the stomach during percutaneous gastrostomy, we sutured a balloon to a nasogastric tube and inflated the balloon in the stomach. The balloon provides support and firmness for the compliant stomach, and prevents the gastric wall from being pushed away by incoming needles and catheters. The balloon frequently becomes palpable in the left upper quadrant and offers a good target fluoroscopically or sonographically. Trocar catheters were easier to insert when the target balloon technique was used, and trocar puncture shortened procedure time. The technique initi

Percutaneous laparoscopic-assisted gastrostomy outperforms surgical gastrostomy for temporary feeding in long-gap esophageal atresia: a comparative cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the clinical efficacy of percutaneous laparoscopic-assisted gastrostomy (PLAG) and surgical gastrostomy (SG) for temporary gastrostomy in neonates with long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 41 neonates diagnosed with LGEA who underwent temporary gastrostomy. Patients were retrospectively divided into two groups based on the year of surgery: the PLAG group (intervention group, n = 23,post-2020) and the SG group (historical control group, n = 18, pre-2020).We compared perioperative parameters, including postope

Outcomes and Complications of Radiological Gastrostomy vs. Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy for Enteral Feeding: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and percutaneous radiological gastrostomy (PRG) are commonly utilized to establish access to enteral nutrition. However, data comparing the outcomes of PEG vs. PRG are conflicting. Therefore, we aimed to conduct an updated systemic review and meta-analysis comparing PRG and PEG outcomes. METHODS: Medline, Embase, and Cochrane library databases were searched until February 24, 2023. Primary outcomes included 30-day mortality, tube leakage, tube dislodgement, perforation, and peritonitis. Secondary outcomes included bleeding, infectious comp

A comparison of techniques for laparoscopic gastrostomy placement in children.

BACKGROUND: The insertion of gastrostomy tube (GT) for children is typically accomplished using a minimally invasive approach. There is considerable variability in the technical details of this operation, depending on how much of the procedure is performed intracorporeal. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes and resource utilization of two differing techniques for laparoscopic GT insertion in the pediatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center retrospective review of all patients who underwent a laparoscopic GT insertion from 2001-2011 was conducted and analyzed b

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in patients with systemic sclerosis.

Gastrointestinal (GI) problems are common in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and some develop pronounced underweight despite dietary intervention. Two patients with SSc were referred to our department because of severe GI symptoms and critical underweight. They had lost 24 and 23 kg, respectively, and their body mass index (BMI) was only 15 and 17 kg/m(2), respectively. After careful GI evaluation, both were treated with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). Eight months later one patient had gained 13 kg (BMI 19 kg/m(2)) and after 5 months follow-up the other had gained 9 kg (BMI

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding in the adult patient.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a procedure in which a feeding tube is passed through the abdominal wall directly into the stomach under endoscopic guidance, enabling nutrients, medication and fluids to be delivered directly into the stomach. PEG feeding is the most common form of enteral feeding in people requiring artificial nutritional support for longer than 4-6 weeks. However, the procedure is not without risk, and although most patients experience few problems with their PEG tube, complications do occur. It is important that nurses are able to recognize the risks and problem
