Effects of ferritin heavy chain on oxidative stress, cell proliferation and apoptosis in geese follicular granulosa cells.

1. The ferritin heavy chain (FHC) has a vital impact on follicular development in geese, due to its ability to regulate apoptosis of granulosa cells (GCs) and follicular atresia. However, its specific regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. The present study characterised how FHC regulates oxidative stress, cell proliferation and apoptosis in goose GCs by interfering with and overexpressing the FHC gene.2. After 72 h of interference with FHC expression, the activity of GCs decreased remarkably (p < 0.05), reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and the expression levels of antioxidant enzyme genes

Effect of yeast culture supplementation on blood characteristics, body development, intestinal morphology, and enzyme activities in geese.

The objective of this experiment is to evaluate the effects of yeast culture (YC) supplementation on blood characteristics, body size, carcass characteristics, organ weights, intestinal morphology, and enzyme activities. Five groups of geese were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments: the basal diet (control) and basal diets plus 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0%, or 4.0% YC. Compared with the controls, YC supplementation at 0.5% and 1.0% increased the serum total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), and globulin (GLO) and decreased the uric acid and creatine kinase (CK) contents (p < 0.05). YC supplementation

Longitudinal study on antibiotic susceptibility in commensal E. coli from geese raised in free-range production systems.

The transmission of antimicrobial resistance bacteria from animals to humans has become an important concern. The extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) -AmpC- producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-AmpC EC) and quinolones resistant E. coli are of particular interest. The present study aimed to evaluate the load and prevalence of antibiotic-resistant commensal E. coli along the goose production cycle on 2 free-range farms in central Italy. On A farm, oxytetracycline was administered, while the B farm did not use antibiotics during the geese productive cycle. One hundred geese of 1-day-old from the

Digesta retention patterns in geese (Anser anser) and turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) and deduced function of avian caeca.

Although it is well-known that retrograde transport of urine fills the caeca of birds with fluid and small particles, the function of avian caeca is still not fully understood. We measured mean retention times (MRT) of solute (cobalt-EDTA, Co), small particle (<2mm, chromium-mordanted fibre, Cr) and large particle (8mm, cerium-marked fibre, Ce) markers in geese (Anser anser) and turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) fed alfalfa pellets ad libitum. Intake did not differ between species. Turkeys had longer MRT for all markers (Co: 10.4 vs. 3.2h; Cr 23.3 vs. 2.9h; Ce 9.5 vs. 2.1h), achieved a higher fibr

Pathogen Loading From Canada Geese Faeces in Freshwater: Potential Risks to Human Health Through Recreational Water Exposure.

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) faeces have been shown to contain pathogenic protozoa and bacteria in numerous studies over the past 15 years. Further, increases in both the Canada geese populations and their ideal habitat requirements in the United States (US) translate to a greater presence of these human pathogens in public areas, such as recreational freshwater beaches. Combining these factors, the potential health risk posed by Canada geese faeces at freshwater beaches presents an emerging public health issue that warrants further study. Here, literature concerning human pathogens in Can

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis reveals potential candidate genes and regulatory pathways associated with egg weight in geese.

Egg weight (EW) is a key trait in both breeding and production for poultry. Although Zi geese demonstrate good egg-laying performance, they have relatively low EW. Identifying candidate genes and pathways associated with EW in geese is essential for enhancing genetic progress. In this study, 260 female Zi geese at 30 weeks of age were monitored individually for egg number (EN) and EW. Thirty geese, showing no significant differences in body weight and EN but significant variation in EW (P < 0.05), were selected and divided into a high egg weight (HEW) group (n = 15) and a low egg weight (LEW)

Integrated Circular RNAs Analysis Across the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian Axis Identifies Regulatory Modules Shaping Reproductive Traits in Geese.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are increasingly recognized as key post-transcriptional regulators. However, their functions within the avian hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis remain poorly understood. To investigate potential associations of circRNAs with breed differentiation and reproductive traits, we constructed cross-tissue circRNA profiles through whole-transcriptome sequencing of the HPO axis in Zi and Xianghai flying geese. A total of 90, 80, and 90 DE-circRNAs were identified in the hypothalamus, ovary, and pituitary, respectively, corresponding to 248 non-redundant DE-circRNA IDs a

Goslings, but not adults, show physiological alterations associated with mercury contamination in wild Arctic barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis).

The Arctic is increasingly exposed to anthropogenic contaminants, yet their physiological effects on wildlife remain poorly understood. Mercury (Hg) is of particular concern because it accumulates in polar ecosystems and biomagnifies along food webs. We investigated associations between blood Hg concentrations and multiple physiological markers in wild barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) breeding in Svalbard. Using blood samples from both adults and their goslings, we quantified Hg concentrations, oxidative damage (lipid peroxidation measured as 4-hydroxynonenal, 4-HNE), metabolomic profiles, an

Effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on Growth Performance, Immune Performance, Antioxidant Capacity, Jejunal Microbiota and Transcriptome of Zi Geese.

With the global ban on antibiotic growth promoters, identifying safe, effective alternatives for poultry production is urgent. Probiotics, particularly Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA), have shown promise in improving animal health and performance, but research in geese remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary BA supplementation on growth performance, immune function, antioxidant capacity, intestinal morphology, microbiota, and transcriptome in growing Zi geese. A total of 180 50-day-old male Zi geese were randomly assigned to a control group (basal diet) or an exper

Multidecadal High Mortality Disease Events in Australian Domestic Geese Associated with a Novel Alphaherpesvirus, Designated Anatid Alphaherpevirus 2.

Herpesviruses are ubiquitous viruses which infect a wide range of hosts. Novel herpesviruses are being increasingly detected in free-ranging bird populations and there are growing concerns for cross-species infection and spillover events. Herein, multiple sporadic outbreaks of mortality caused by a herpesvirus are described in domestic geese in Queensland, Australia. Goose herpesvirus was initially detected in 1989 in south-east Queensland, and this article details four further recent outbreaks and reports novel genome sequencing and phylogeny of the preliminarily designated anatid alphaherpes

Metabolic Profiling Analysis of Liver in Landes Geese During the Formation of Fatty Liver via GC-TOF/MS.

Fatty liver production results from the process of overfeeding geese, inducing a dramatic increase in de novo liver lipogenesis. To investigate the alteration of liver metabolites by overfeeding, especially lipid metabolites, and the potential pathways causing these changes, 60 Landes geese at 65 days old were raised in three groups with 20 geese per group, namely, the D0 group (free from gavage), D7 group (overfeeding for 7 days), and D25 group (overfeeding for 25 days). At 90 days old, segments of liver tissue were collected from 10 geese of each group for gas chromatography time-of-flight/m

Molecular detection of avian hepatitis E virus (Orthohepevirus B) in chickens, ducks, geese, and western capercaillies in Poland.

Orthohepevirus B, commonly known as avian hepatitis E virus (aHEV), causes big liver and spleen disease (BLS) or hepatitis-splenomegaly syndrome (HSS) in chickens. BLS is an emerging disease among chicken flocks in several countries around the world. In our previous studies, serology and molecular biology screening revealed that chicken flocks are widely affected by aHEV in Poland. The present study, which was conducted between 2019 and 2020, aimed to investigate the prevalence of aHEV in chicken flocks and other poultry, including ducks, geese, and turkeys. A total of 307 flocks were examined

TOXOPLASMA GONDII ANTIBODY PREVALENCE AND TWO NEW GENOTYPES OF THE PARASITE IN ENDANGERED HAWAIIAN GEESE (NENE: BRANTA SANDVICENSIS).

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite transmitted by domestic cats ( Felis catus ) that has historically caused mortality in native Hawaiian birds. To estimate how widespread exposure to the parasite is in nene (Hawaiian Geese, Branta sandvicensis), we did a serologic survey for T. gondii antibody and genetically characterized parasite DNA from the tissues of dead birds that had confirmed infections by immunohistochemistry. Of 94 geese sampled, prevalence on the island of Kauai, Maui, and Molokai was 21% (n=42), 23% (n=31), and 48% (n=21), respectively. Two new T. gondii genotypes (ToxoDB

The elevated clock genes involved in regulating the hormone secretion and follicular development during the laying period of geese.

The reproductive performance of geese is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, which controls ovarian follicular development and hormone secretion, and ultimately determines egg production. In this study, Wanxi White geese at three reproductive stages (pre-laying, laying, and broody periods) were used to investigate the regulatory roles of circadian clock genes in follicular development. Results showed that follicular growth, serum levels of estradiol (E2), melatonin (MLT), and progesterone (P4) markedly increased during the laying period, whereas a higher number of atret

Development and validation of a quadruplex qPCR assay for simultaneous detection of GPV, GoCV, TMUV, and GAstV-Ⅱ in geese.

Co-infections with multiple viruses are common in geese, complicating clinical diagnosis. Here, we developed a quadruplex TaqMan-probe based qPCR method for the simultaneous detection of Goose parvovirus (GPV), Goose circovirus (GoCV), Tembusu virus (TMUV), and Goose astrovirus Ⅱ (GAstV-Ⅱ). Specific primers and hydrolysis probes were designed targeting the following conserved regions: the VP3 gene of GPV, the Rep gene of GoCV, the E gene of TMUV, and the ORF2 gene of GAstV-Ⅱ, respectively. No cross-reactivity was observed with other common avian pathogens, including Goose paramyxovirus (GPMV),

Transcriptome analysis reveals the alleviating effect of Polysaccharide of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz on thymic involution in Magang geese.

Thymic involution is one of the important causes of decreased immunity in the body. Noncoding RNAs (miRNAs and lncRNAs) play crucial roles in regulating organ growth and development. Polysaccharide of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz (PAMK) is widely acknowledged for its anti-oxidant, anti-aging, and immune-enhancing effects. However, its potential application in preventing the age-related thymic involution of Magang geese has not been previously reported. In this study, 54 4-month-old Magang geese were randomly divided into 3 groups, the thymus and serum of 18 geese were collected aseptically

Genetic fine-mapping of body weight and size traits at 120 days of age in Lion-head geese.

BACKGROUND: The Lion-head goose is one of the largest goose breeds all over the word. Body weight and body size traits at 120 days of age (i.e. the slaughter age) are economically important traits, which directly affect the profit of Lion-head goose industry. However, so far few studies have explored the genetic basis of these traits. This study for the first time integrated the single-SNP genome-wide association study (GWAS) and genetic fine-mapping based on whole-genome sequencing data to investigate the genetic architecture of body weight and 11 body size traits at 120 days of age in 504 li
