Genetic Diversity of Ascaris in China Assessed Using Simple Sequence Repeat Markers.

The giant roundworm Ascaris infects pigs and people worldwide and causes serious diseases. The taxonomic relationship between Ascaris suum and Ascaris lumbricoides is still unclear. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the genetic diversity and population genetic structure of 258 Ascaris specimens from humans and pigs from 6 sympatric regions in Ascaris-endemic regions of China using existing simple sequence repeat data. The microsatellite markers showed a high level of allelic richness and genetic diversity in the samples. Each of the populations demonstrated excess homozygosit

Trans-Atlantic Distribution and Introgression as Inferred from Single Nucleotide Polymorphism: Mussels Mytilus and Environmental Factors.

Large-scale climate changes influence the geographic distribution of biodiversity. Many taxa have been reported to extend or reduce their geographic range, move poleward or displace other species. However, for closely related species that can hybridize in the natural environment, displacement is not the only effect of changes of environmental variables. Another option is subtler, hidden expansion, which can be found using genetic methods only. The marine blue mussels Mytilus are known to change their geographic distribution despite being sessile animals. In addition to natural dissemination at

Speciation and phylogeography in the cosmopolitan marine moon jelly, Aurelia sp.

BACKGROUND: The cosmopolitan moon jelly Aurelia is characterized by high degrees of morphological and ecological plasticity, and subsequently by an unclear taxonomic status. The latter has been revised repeatedly over the last century, dividing the genus Aurelia in as many as 12 or as little as two species. We used molecular data and phenotypic traits to unravel speciation processes and phylogeographic patterns in Aurelia. RESULTS: Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data (16S and ITS-1/5.8S rDNA) from 66 world-wide sampled specimens reveal star-like tree topologies, unambiguously differentiating 7

A new locus for resistance to gamma-radiation-induced thymic lymphoma identified using inter-specific consomic and inter-specific recombinant congenic strains of mice.

Mice of the C57BL/6J inbred strain develop thymic lymphomas at very high frequency after acute gamma-irradiation, while mice of several inbred strains derived from the wild progenitor of the Mus spretus species and their F1 hybrids with C57BL/6J appear extremely resistant. Analysis of the genetic determinism of the gamma-radiation-induced thymic lymphoma (RITL) resistance with the help of inter-specific consomic strains (ICS), which carry a single introgressed Mus spretus chromosome on a C57BL/6J genetic background, provide significant evidence for the existence of a thymic lymphoma resistance

Engineering monosex and sterile fish for food production: from conventional methods to CRISPR-based precision.

Monosex and sterile fish populations are increasingly recognized as essential tools for enhancing aquaculture productivity while safeguarding ecosystems from genetic introgression and uncontrolled reproduction. Conventional approaches such as hormonal manipulation and triploidy have demonstrated utility but face persistent limitations in efficiency, welfare, and regulatory acceptance. Recent breakthroughs in CRISPR-based genome editing and germ cell transplantation now enable heritable, scalable, and biocontained control of sex and fertility, offering transformative potential for sustainable a

Genome-Wide Divergence in the West-African Malaria Vector Anopheles melas.

Anopheles melas is a member of the recently diverged An. gambiae species complex, a model for speciation studies, and is a locally important malaria vector along the West-African coast where it breeds in brackish water. A recent population genetic study of An. melas revealed species-level genetic differentiation between three population clusters. An. melas West extends from The Gambia to the village of Tiko, Cameroon. The other mainland cluster, An. melas South, extends from the southern Cameroonian village of Ipono to Angola. Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea An. melas populations are genetical

Higher Gene Flow in Sex-Related Chromosomes than in Autosomes during Fungal Divergence.

Nonrecombining sex chromosomes are widely found to be more differentiated than autosomes among closely related species, due to smaller effective population size and/or to a disproportionally large-X effect in reproductive isolation. Although fungal mating-type chromosomes can also display large nonrecombining regions, their levels of differentiation compared with autosomes have been little studied. Anther-smut fungi from the Microbotryum genus are castrating pathogens of Caryophyllaceae plants with largely nonrecombining mating-type chromosomes. Using whole genome sequences of 40 fungal strain

Pleiotropic Effects of Grm7/GRM7 in Shaping Neurodevelopmental Pathways and the Neural Substrate of Complex Behaviors and Disorders.

Natural gene variants of metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 7 (Grm7), coding for mGluR7, affect individuals' alcohol-drinking preference. Psychopharmacological investigations have suggested that mGluR7 is also involved in responses to cocaine, morphine, and nicotine exposures. We review the pleiotropic effects of Grm7 and the principle of recombinant quantitative trait locus introgression (RQI), which led to the discovery of the first mammalian quantitative gene accounting for alcohol-drinking preference. Grm7/GRM7 can play important roles in mammalian ontogenesis, brain development, and

Tracing the distribution and evolution of lactase persistence in Southern Europe through the study of the T(-13910) variant.

We investigated the occurrence and intra-allelic variability of the T(-13910) variant located upstream of the lactase gene in 965 individuals from 20 different locations of Italy and Greece. The T(-13910) frequency ranges from 0.072 (Sardinia) to 0.237 (North-East Italy), with a statistically significant difference between North-East Italians and other Italian populations. The comparison of the lactose tolerance predicted by T(-13910) and that assessed by other studies using physiological tests shows a one-way statistically significant discrepancy that could be due to sampling differences. Sex chromosomes in meiotic, hemiclonal, clonal and polyploid hybrid vertebrates: along the 'extended speciation continuum'.

We review knowledge about the roles of sex chromosomes in vertebrate hybridization and speciation, exploring a gradient of divergences with increasing reproductive isolation (speciation continuum). Under early divergence, well-differentiated sex chromosomes in meiotic hybrids may cause Haldane-effects and introgress less easily than autosomes. Undifferentiated sex chromosomes are more susceptible to introgression and form multiple (or new) sex chromosome systems with hardly predictable dominance hierarchies. Under increased divergence, most vertebrates reach complete intrinsic reproductive iso

Genomic divergence and lack of introgressive hybridization between two 13-year periodical cicadas support life cycle switching in the face of climate change.

Life history evolution spurred by post-Pleistocene climatic change is hypothesized to be responsible for the present diversity in periodical cicadas (Magicicada), but the mechanism of life cycle change has been controversial. To understand the divergence process of 13-year and 17-year cicada life cycles, we studied genetic relationships between two synchronously emerging, parapatric 13-year periodical cicada species in the Decim group, Magicicada tredecim and M. neotredecim. The latter was hypothesized to be of hybrid origin or to have switched from a 17-year cycle via developmental plasticity

The species delimitation problem in the Simulium damnosum complex, blackfly vectors of onchocerciasis.

The Simulium damnosum Theobald complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) comprises 57 cytoforms grouped into six subcomplexes. Previous phylogenetic studies using gene sequences have not completely resolved the evolutionary relationships of the cytoforms. The present study investigated the systematics of the complex using a phylogeographic approach. The differentiation between eastern and western forms observed in the phylogenetic studies is confirmed in the estimated haplotype networks. However, haplotypes tend to group in geographical clades and not according to cytoforms. Spatial analyses of the molecu

A transmembrane protein confers the Yr26/Yr24/YrCH42/YrG22-mediated stripe rust resistance in wheat.

Stripe or yellow rust (YR), caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a devastating fungal disease of wheat. Here, we report the map-based cloning of Yr26 (synonyms: Yr24, YrCH42, and YrG22), a major stripe rust resistance gene, and its validation by gene silencing, mutation analysis and transgenic complementation. Yr26, which firstly arises in emmer wheat and recently has introgressed into bread wheat, is a newly evolved gene encoding a transmembrane protein. AlphaFold v3.0 predictes a C-terminal four-helical bundle domain that is critical for triggering Ca2+-dependent

Introgression of Maize Diversity for Drought Tolerance: Subtropical Maize Landraces as Source of New Positive Variants.

Current climate change models predict an increased frequency and intensity of drought for much of the developing world within the next 30 years. These events will negatively affect maize yields, potentially leading to economic and social instability in many smallholder farming communities. Knowledge about the genetic resources available for traits related to drought tolerance has great importance in developing breeding program strategies. The aim of this research was to study a maize landrace introgression panel to identify chromosomal regions associated with a drought tolerance index. For tha

Genetic structure of Lutzomyia longipalpis populations in Mato Grosso Do Sul, Brazil, based on microsatellite markers.

BACKGROUND: Lutzomyialongipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the major vector of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum and thus plays a crucial role in the epidemiology of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL). This vector is the best studied species of sand fly in the Neotropical region. Many studies claim that this vector is in fact a species complex; however there is still no consensus regarding the number of species that belong into this complex or the geographical distribution of sibling species. The aim of the present study was to analyze the genetic relationships within Lu. longipalpis populat

Combining hydrodynamic modelling with genetics: can passive larval drift shape the genetic structure of Baltic Mytilus populations?

While secondary contact between Mytilus edulis and Mytilus trossulus in North America results in mosaic hybrid zone formation, both species form a hybrid swarm in the Baltic. Despite pervasive gene flow, Baltic Mytilus species maintain substantial genetic and phenotypic differentiation. Exploring mechanisms underlying the contrasting genetic composition in Baltic Mytilus species will allow insights into processes such as speciation or adaptation to extremely low salinity. Previous studies in the Baltic indicated that only weak interspecific reproductive barriers exist and discussed the putativ

Multiple hybrid zones involving four Cardamine species and their triploid progeny: watching allopolyploid speciation in action?

Hybrid zones provide excellent opportunities to study evolutionary processes linked to interspecific gene flow, including introgression, genetic erosion, polyploid establishment, and speciation. The genus Cardamine (Brassicaceae) serves as an excellent model for polyploid evolution, including one of the few well-documented neo-allopolyploid species that have evolved in the last 300 yr. Using a combination of flow cytometric screening of nuclear DNA content, next-generation restriction site-associated DNA sequencing, and genomic in situ hybridization, we uncovered an unprecedented case of exten

Resistance to pirimiphos-methyl in West African Anopheles is spreading via duplication and introgression of the Ace1 locus.

Vector population control using insecticides is a key element of current strategies to prevent malaria transmission in Africa. The introduction of effective insecticides, such as the organophosphate pirimiphos-methyl, is essential to overcome the recurrent emergence of resistance driven by the highly diverse Anopheles genomes. Here, we use a population genomic approach to investigate the basis of pirimiphos-methyl resistance in the major malaria vectors Anopheles gambiae and A. coluzzii. A combination of copy number variation and a single non-synonymous substitution in the acetylcholinesterase

QTL analysis identifies a modifier locus of aganglionosis in the rat model of Hirschsprung disease carrying Ednrb(sl) mutations.

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) exhibits complex genetics with incomplete penetrance and variable severity thought to result as a consequence of multiple gene interactions that modulate the ability of enteric neural crest cells to populate the developing gut. As reported previously, when the same null mutation of the Ednrb gene, Ednrb(sl), was introgressed into the F344 strain, almost 60% of F344-Ednrb(sl/sl) pups did not show any symptoms of aganglionosis, appearing healthy and normally fertile. These findings strongly suggested that the severity of HSCR was affected by strain-specific genetic fa

STV11 encodes a sulphotransferase and confers durable resistance to rice stripe virus.

Rice stripe virus (RSV) causes one of the most serious viral diseases of rice (Oryza sativa L.), but the molecular basis of RSV resistance has remained elusive. Here we show that the resistant allele of rice STV11 (STV11-R) encodes a sulfotransferase (OsSOT1) catalysing the conversion of salicylic acid (SA) into sulphonated SA (SSA), whereas the gene product encoded by the susceptible allele STV11-S loses this activity. Sequence analyses suggest that the STV11-R and STV11-S alleles were predifferentiated in different geographic populations of wild rice, Oryza rufipogon, and remained prevalent
