Cytogenetic and genetic trends in the evolution of unisexual lizards.

Extensive karyological, allozyme and molecular genetic analyses of many parthenogenetic lizards confirm the origin of these species by hybridization. The concept of reticulate (hybridogeneous) speciation based on 3 interrelated phenomena such as hybridization-unisexuality-polyploidy has been elaborated. Cytogenetic and genetic variability and some regular trends in the evolution of hybrid unisexual species have been demonstrated. Cytogenetic investigations of unisexual-bisexual complex lizards of the genus Darevskia (formerly Lacerta) in the family Lacertidae suggest that some characteristics

A search for common immunological abnormalities at the onset of murine lupus in two genetically different strains.

Mice of the genetically different BXSB and MRL/lpr strains develop murine lupus spontaneously at about three months of age. Polyclonal B-cell activation is thought to play a major role in the development of the syndrome in each strains, but the immunological events which lead to this activation are not known. We therefore examined the immune characteristics of mice aged 10-16 weeks, at the onset of the disease. We found consistent abnormalities in the percentages of lymphocyte sub-populations in both male BXSB, and male and female MRL/lpr mice. In particular, the ratio of helper to suppressor/

Normal genetic variation of the human foot: Part 2: Population variance, epigenetic mechanisms, and developmental constraint in function.

Congenital deformities of the foot have been reported to correlate with regulatory epigenetic mechanisms that are also responsible for the timing and sequencing of developmental growth of the lower limb. Developmental variance of normal morphologic features has also been shown to vary between populations despite the retention of human foot characteristics. The molecular evidence for genetically controlled expressions of common evolved physical features is highly suggestive of regulatory control mechanisms that act together with developmental constraints to homogenize the retained functional ch

Neurodevelopmental Trajectories and Psychiatric Morbidity: Lessons Learned From the 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with a broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental phenotypes and is the strongest known single genetic risk factor for schizophrenia. Compared to other rare structural pathogenic genetic variants, 22q11DS is relatively common and one of the most extensively studied. This review provides a state-of-the-art overview of current insights regarding associated neurodevelopmental phenotypes and potential implications for 22q11DS and beyond. RECENT FINDINGS: We will first discuss recent findings with respect to neurodevelopmental phen

Children with benign focal sharp waves in the EEG--developmental disorders and epilepsy.

Focal sharp waves (shw) in the childhood EEG with predominantly centrotemporal localization are a diagnostic hallmark of idiopathic partial epilepsy and have been shown to be genetically determined. Absence of neurological and neuropsychological impairment was long considered to be a prerequisite for diagnosis. For years, this diagnostic paradigm obscured the large phenotypic variability of genetically determined focal shw. The purpose of the present review is to survey and critically evaluate the widely dispersed literature on this topic. Two main groups can be distinguished: Idiopathic parti

Temporal-parietal-occipital epilepsy in GEFS+ associated with SCN1A mutation.

Most families with genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus show a mutation in the sodium channel alpha 1 subunit gene, however, but there is much phenotypic heterogeneity and focal epilepsy remains relatively rare. Here, we report a family with electroclinical features indicative of temporal-parietal-occipital carrefour epilepsy with common occurrence of post-ictal migraine. We studied a four-generation family including nine affected subjects by means of EEG and MRI. Genetic testing was performed by targeted re-sequencing (gene panel). In most patients, seizure semiology included cognitive

Position parameters optimization of surface piercing propeller by artificial neural network.

Improving the performance of surface-piercing propellers is achieved by investigating the influential factors. In this study, Artificial Neural Network is used to identify nonlinear models for estimating various phenomena. Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II is considered as an optimization tool. In this study, in order to optimize the position parameters, including the immersion ratio, angle of attack, and yaw angle, data from experimental tests at the HYDROTECH center of IUST were collected as the initial data field for the generation of training data by the artificial neural network,

Clinical spectrum, etiology, and treatment response in neonatal autonomic seizures: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal autonomic signs such as apnea, cyanosis, pallor, and desaturation rarely occur as isolated ictal phenomena and require a high degree of clinical suspicion in combination with continuous video electroencephalogram (vEEG) to establish a diagnosis. METHODS: We review the clinical profile, etiology, and treatment response in five neonates who presented with apnea as the primary seizure semiology. RESULTS: Ictal apneic episodes were confirmed on continuous vEEG in all five infants within 24-48 h of symptom onset. Seizure etiologies included structural, infectious, and genetic

The epidemiological profile of ASIA syndrome after HPV vaccination: an evaluation based on the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting Systems.

The term "ASIA-Autoimmune/inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants" describes an umbrella of clinical conditions sharing similar signs or symptoms, including post-vaccination phenomena. No information is available on the epidemiology of the ASIA syndrome, especially following HPV vaccination. We carried out an analysis of the VAERS database to retrieve all cases of suspected ASIA syndrome according to the Shoenfeld and Agmon-Levin's guideline for the diagnosis. After causality assessment and case validation, 2,207 cases were considered probably or possibly related to vaccination. These repre

X-chromosome inactivation and skin disease.

X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) is the process in which females transcriptionally silence one of their two X chromosomes in early embryonic development, equalizing X chromosome gene expression between males and females. XCI depends on a gene called XIST, a functional RNA molecule that does not code for a protein. Recent studies indicate abundant intergenic transcription and nonprotein coding RNAs in the human genome, which are suspected to function in modulating gene expression. XCI may therefore serve as a useful model to learn and understand the potential function of these elements, as well

Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Investigation on Leaf Necrosis Induced by ZmWus2 Transient Overexpression in Nicotiana benthamiana.

WUSCHEL (WUS) is a crucial transcription factor in regulating plant stem cell development, and its expression can also improve genetic transformation. However, the ectopic expression of WUS always causes pleiotropic effects during genetic transformation, making it important to understand the regulatory mechanisms underlying these phenomena. In our study, we found that the transient expression of the maize WUS ortholog ZmWus2 caused severe leaf necrosis in Nicotiana benthamiana. We performed transcriptomic and non-target metabolomic analyses on tobacco leaves during healthy to wilted states aft

Pathogenesis of hypertension in African Americans.

Hypertension is a compelling disease process that disproportionately affects African Americans. It is the single largest risk factor for cardiovascular disease in African Americans. The end organ manifestations of hypertension are striking and include higher rates of stroke, significantly increased renal disease including end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis, higher risk of left ventricular hypertrophy, and an associated higher risk of heart failure. The cause of these more aggressive end organ phenomena is likely multifactorial and includes a mix of genetic and environmental influences.

Chromatin remodeling and neuronal function: exciting links.

Regulation of gene expression occurs at different levels, from DNA to protein, and through various mechanisms. One of them is modification of the chromatin structure, which is involved in the definition of transcriptional active and inactive regions of the chromosomes. These phenomena are associated with reversible chemical modifications of the genetic material rather than with variability within the DNA sequences inherited by the individual and are therefore called 'epigenetic' modifications. Ablation of the molecular players responsible for epigenetic modifications often gives rise to neurol

The effects of chromosome rearrangements on the expression of heterochromatic genes in chromosome 2L of Drosophila melanogaster.

The light (lt) gene of Drosophila melanogaster is located at the base of the left arm of chromosome 2, within or very near centromeric heterochromatin (2Lh). Chromosome rearrangements that move the lt+ gene from its normal proximal position and place the gene in distal euchromatin result in mosaic or variegated expression of the gene. The cytogenetic and genetic properties of 17 lt-variegated rearrangements are described in this report. We show that five of the heterochromatic genes adjacent to lt are subject to inactivation by these rearrangements and that the euchromatic loci in proximal 2L

Impairments of inhibitory neurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia are two fatal neurodegenerative disorders. They are part of a pathophysiological continuum, displaying clinical, neuropathological, and genetic overlaps. There is compelling evidence that neuronal circuit dysfunction is an early feature of both diseases. Impaired neuronal excitability, imbalanced excitatory and inhibitory influences, and altered functional connectivity have been reported. These phenomena are likely due to combined alterations in the various cellular components involved in the functioning of neuronal networks. This revie

Disentangling the complexity of psoriasis in the post-genome-wide association era.

In recent years, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been instrumental in unraveling the genetic architecture of complex diseases, including psoriasis. The application of large-scale GWA studies in psoriasis has illustrated several associated loci that participate in the cutaneous inflammation, however explaining a fraction of the disease heritability. With the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies and functional genomics approaches, the post-GWAS era aims to unravel the functional mechanisms underlying the inter-individual variability in psoriasis patients. In this review,

Co-Selection of Resistance to Antibiotics, Biocides and Heavy Metals, and Its Relevance to Foodborne Pathogens.

Concerns have been raised in recent years regarding co-selection for antibiotic resistance among bacteria exposed to biocides used as disinfectants, antiseptics and preservatives, and to heavy metals (particularly copper and zinc) used as growth promoters and therapeutic agents for some livestock species. There is indeed experimental and observational evidence that exposure to these non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents can induce or select for bacterial adaptations that result in decreased susceptibility to one or more antibiotics. This may occur via cellular mechanisms that are protective acro

[How acne vulgaris develops].

For the initiation of acne multiple factors are required from endogenous to exogenous sources. The morphogenesis of acne is well studied, and the principle steps are discussed in the paper. Acne is a disease of humans, developing in sebaceous follicles. The first step is a proliferation-retention hyperkeratosis in the infundibulum, thus forming a follicular filament, from which a microcomedo arises. Finally open and closed comedones appear. This sequence is not strictly followed, but quite typical. Androgen stimulation activates sebaceous lipogenesis. At this point propionibacteria colonize th

Paraneoplastic phenomena and diagnostic challenges in angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL): report of two cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is an aggressive subtype of peripheral T-cell lymphoma with unique clinical, pathological and genetic features. Clinical diagnosis is often hampered as typical lymphoma-associated symptoms may not be found at the time of first presentation and only occur later during disease progression. However, as AITL leads to a de-regulated immune system, various paraneoplastic syndromes or autoimmune reactions may represent the first clinical signs, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. CASE REPORT: We herein describe two AITL cases characteri
