Genetic analysis of clinical VZV isolates collected in China reveals a more homologous profile.

Forty-four varicella-zoster virus (VZV) isolates from China were genotyped by using a scattered single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) method, including open reading frames (ORFs) 1, 22, 31, 37, 60, 62, 67, and 68. Based on the analysis of the polymorphic markers in the 8 ORFs, all of the 44 isolates can be placed in genotype J defined by the SNP profiles in ORF22 or clade B defined by the SNP profiles in ORFs 31, 37, 60, 62, 67, and 68. The three consecutive nucleotide (CGG) in-frame insertions in ORF 1 were found in 8 (18.2%) isolates, which has not been described in VZV strains from any other

A proinflammatory genetic profile increases the risk for chronic atrophic gastritis and gastric carcinoma.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Pro-inflammatory polymorphisms within the genes interleukin (IL)-1B and IL-1RN are associated with risk for gastric carcinoma (GC) in Helicobacter pylori-infected individuals. We aimed to determine the association between variation of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha gene and the risk for chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and GC. We also investigated the extent to which the combined effect of proinflammatory genetic polymorphisms (IL-1B, IL-1RN, and TNF-alpha), and the combined effect of TNF-alpha and bacterial genotypes each influence such a risk. METHODS: In a case-co

The behavioral profile of severe mental retardation in a genetic mouse model of phenylketonuria.

Pah(enu2) mice, created by chemically induced genetic mutation, are characterized by biochemical phenotypes closely resembling untreated human phenylketonuria (PKU). However, studies conducted in adult Pah(enu2) mice have shown no indices of the severe mental retardation that characterizes untreated PKU. The present experiments explored recognition of novel spatial and non-spatial information in Pah(enu2) mice by two nonassociative tests that do not use explicit reinforcement and avoid lengthy training. Moreover, we evaluated emotional reactivity by the Elevated Plus Maze. Finally, the perform

Genetic typing of CBL, ASXL1, RUNX1, TET2 and JAK2 in juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia reveals a genetic profile distinct from chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia.

JMML and CMML are rare myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms occurring at both ends of life. To investigate relationships between JMML and CMML, genes recently involved in CMML were studied in 68 JMML patients. Mutations in TET2, RUNX1 and JAK2(V617F) are involved in myelodysplastic and/or myeloproliferative syndromes, and more specifically in CMML but were not found in JMML. Pangenomic analysis by SNP-array showed no abnormality at these loci. Three frameshift mutations of ASXL1 leading to a truncated protein were found in three patients (4%) with late onset JMML displaying also RAS ac
