Prenatal tetrodotoxin infusion blocks segregation of retinogeniculate afferents.

In the adult mammalian visual system, ganglion cell axons from the two eyes are segregated from each other into separate layers within their principal target, the lateral geniculate nucleus. The involvement of spontaneously generated action potential activity in the process of segregation was investigated during the fetal period in which segregation normally occurs in the cat, between embryonic day 45 (E45) and birth (E65). Tetrodotoxin, which blocks the voltage-sensitive sodium channel, was used to prevent action potentials. Fetuses received continuous intracranial infusions of tetrodotoxin f

Axon trajectories and pattern of terminal arborization during the prenatal development of the cat's retinogeniculate pathway.

In this study we have examined the trajectories taken by populations of ganglion cell axons and the spatial gradients of terminal arbor maturity within the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) during the prenatal development of the cat's visual system. To do so, an in vitro method of labeling optic tract axons from fetal brains between embryonic day 37 (E37) and postnatal day 2 (P2) with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used. At the earliest ages studied (E37-E53), optic axons leave the optic tract to run across the LGN toward their sites of termination in straight trajectories parallel to each ot

Neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the hereditary microphthalmic rat: a Golgi study.

Neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) in the microphthalmic rat were examined by the Golgi-Cox method. LGNd neurons in the microphthalmic rat were classified into the multipolar (I) and bipolar (II) types as in the normal rat. The multipolar type was further divided into two subclasses (Ia and Ib) on the basis of their dendritic patterns. The proximal portion of their primary dendrites was thinner than in normal LGNd neurons. The Ia cells had 6-7 primary dendrites extending radially, while the Ib cells had 3-4 primary dendrites spreading primarily parallel to the optic tract.

Temporal bone histopathologic findings in a case of interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 2 [del(2) (q31q33)].

The temporal bones of a 24-day-old female neonate with an interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 2 [del(2)(q31q33)] were studied histopathologically, focusing mainly on the inner ear. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of a temporal bone study in a case of this chromosomal aberration. The abnormalities included a shortened cochlea with underdeveloped modiolus in both ears. Total absence of the spiral ganglion cells and the cochlear nerve bundle, accompanied by obliteration of the fundus of the internal auditory meatus by a bony plate, and dislocation of some geniculate ga

Extracellular fluid pathway inside the facial nerve fascicles.

The extracellular fluid pathway in the facial nerve and the diffusion of a tracer from the facial nerve to other cranial nerves was examined in the rabbit. Sodium fluorescein solution was injected into either the facial nerve fascicles or the epineurial connective tissue as a tracer at the stylomastoid foramen and then localized by fluorescence microscopy. In the facial nerve, fluorescence was observed in the endoneurium and external nerve sheath (epineurium and perineurium) through the geniculate ganglion following injection into the nerve fascicles. The vestibular, trigeminal, and glossophar

Transneuronal retrograde degeneration of retinal ganglion cells following restricted lesions of striate cortex in the monkey.

Transneuronal retrograde degeneration of retinal ganglion cells follows extensive striate cortical removal in macaque monkeys. Its extent depends on the age of the monkey at operation, post-operative survival, species and retinal eccentricity. Some studies of human patients with occipital lobe injury have found no evidence for transneuronal retrograde degeneration, suggesting that either degeneration may not occur or, if present, it is caused directly by secondary damage impinging upon the underlying white matter or the blood supply to the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus and optic tract. We

Morphometric properties of the fallopian canal: comparison of two nations with different ethnic origins.

PURPOSE: To determine the widths of fallopian canal segments (labyrinthine segment, geniculate ganglion, tympanic segment mastoid segment and stylomastoid foramen), in two nations with different ethnic origins, and to analyze the differences in between. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed temporal computerized tomographies of 102 individuals including 38 Turks and 64 Syrians. The widths of right and left labyrinthine (LS), tympanic (TS), mastoid (MS), geniculate ganglion (GG) and stylomastoid foramen (SF) segments of the fallopian canal were measured. RESULTS: The narrowest segment was LS (

Facial paralysis due to Ramsay Hunt syndrome - A rare condition.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (or herpes zoster oticus) is a rare complication of herpes zoster in which reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus infection in the geniculate ganglion occurs. Usually, there are auricular vesicles and symptoms and signs such otalgia and peripheral facial paralysis. In addition, rarely, a rash around the mouth can be seen. Immunodeficient patients are more susceptible to this condition. Diagnosis is essentially based on symptoms. We report the case of a diabetic female patient who sought the emergency department with a complaint of this rare entity.

[Facial nerve schwannomas. Report of a case].

Facial nerve schwannomas are relatively uncommon lesions. The clinical features depend upon the localization and extent of the lesion. The most common presenting symptom is that of a slowly progressive facial nerve palsy, because of facial schwannoma usually are located near the geniculate ganglion. A case of facial schwannoma is reported: a woman presenting a sudden facial palsy did not respond to medical and rehabilitation treatment. First, a Bell's palsy was diagnosed and then the facial nerve schwannoma with imaging techniques. A review about facial nerve schwannomas is reported.

Facial nerve schwannoma: Case report and brief review of the literature.

Schwannomas are rare nerve sheath tumors that can occur throughout the body, and are symptomatic based on location, size, and impingement on adjacent structures. These tumors are often benign lesions and occur sporadically or from genetic conditions such as neurofibromatosis. Schwannomas may arise from peripheral nerves, gastrointestinal nerves, spinal nerve roots and cranial nerves. Facial nerve schwannomas arise from cranial nerve VII, commonly involving the geniculate ganglion, labyrinthine segment, and internal auditory canal. While small lesions are asymptomatic, larger lesions can cause

Anatomical Variations of the Intrapetrous Portion of the Facial Nerve.

The intrapetrous facial nerve has the second longest intraosseous course of all cranial nerves, after the mandibular nerve. But it is by far the most complex considering the anatomical structures closely related to it. The auditory and vestibular portions of the inner ear, the dura of the middle fossa and posterior fossa, the sigmoid sinus and jugular bulb, and the internal carotid artery are close enough to merit attention. This article includes an anatomical study on 100 temporal bones with anatomical references as seen from the middle fossa and from the transmastoid approaches that may help

Dumbbell schwannomas of the internal auditory canal.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Benign tumors of the internal auditory canal (IAC) may leave the confines of the IAC fundus and extend into inner ear structures, forming a dumbbell-shaped lesion. It is important to differentiate dumbbell lesions, which include facial and vestibulocochlear schwannomas, from simple intracanalicular schwannomas, as surgical techniques and prognostic implications are affected. In this article, the imaging and clinical features of these dumbbell schwannomas are described. METHODS: A dumbbell lesion of the IAC is defined as a mass with two bulbous segments, one in the IAC

Circadian rhythm dysfunction in glaucoma: A hypothesis.

The absence of circadian zeitgebers in the social environment causes circadian misalignment, which is often associated with sleep disturbances. Circadian misalignment, defined as a mismatch between the sleep-wake cycle and the timing of the circadian system, can occur either because of inadequate exposure to the light-dark cycle, the most important synchronizer of the circadian system, or reduction in light transmission resulting from ophthalmic diseases (e.g., senile miosis, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and glaucoma). We propose that glaucoma may

Histopathology of eye, optic nerve and brain in a case of dominant optic atrophy.

Histopathology of eye, optic nerve and brain was performed in a patient with typical signs and symptoms of dominant optic atrophy. He belonged to a previously-reported family of 152 members in which optic atrophy was demonstrable in 14 persons, and probably present in a further 8 cases. In the eyes, fibrosis of the retinal ganglion cell layer and disc was found. Ultrastructural examination showed a few remaining cells in this layer, heavy fibrosis and in particular a highly condensed inner limiting membrane. The optic nerves, the optic chiasm and optic tracts showed an increased content of col

Neural hearing loss in a child with poliomyelitis: a histopathological study.

The temporal bones of a 26-month-old white female with a paralytic syndrome clinically and pathologically identical to poliomyelitis were examined. The aetiological agent was unknown although a non-poliomyelitis enterovirus infection seemed likely. There was a complete absence of the cochlear neurons and substantially reduced peripheral and central axons with loss of some inner hair cells but preservation of outer hair cells. Scarpa's ganglion, and the geniculate ganglion were partially atrophied. The saccule and utricle were mildly dilated and Reissner's membrane of the apical turn was bulgin

A Case of Petrous Apex Cholesteatoma Removed Using an Exoscope and an Endoscope Without Posterior Rerouting of the Facial Nerve.

Petrous apex cholesteatoma (PAC) is a rare disease extending into the deep area of the temporal bone. Traditionally, lesions surrounding the geniculate ganglion often required facial nerve rerouting, which carries the inherent risk of worsening facial nerve function due to neural ischemia. We report a case of PAC successfully removed via subtotal petrosectomy combined with a trans-superior semicircular canal approach, achieving complete resection while preserving neural function. A 43-year-old female with a history of surgery for cholesteatoma and pre-existing left-sided deafness presented wit

Retinal projections in the short-tailed fruit bat, Carollia perspicillata, as studied using the axonal transport of cholera toxin B subunit: Comparison with mouse.

To provide a modern description of the Chiropteran visual system, the subcortical retinal projections were studied in the short-tailed fruit bat, Carollia perspicillata, using the anterograde transport of eye-injected cholera toxin B subunit, supplemented by the silver-impregnation of anterograde degeneration following eye removal, and compared with the retinal projections of the mouse. The retinal projections were heavily labeled by the transported toxin in both species. Almost all components of the murine retinal projection are present in Carollia in varying degrees of prominence and lateral

Bell's palsy in children. Cases of progressive facial nerve degeneration.

Bell's palsy in children occurs infrequently and carries a good prognosis for ultimate recovery. However, results of electrical testing have been reported only sparsely. This paper details the authors' experience with five patients under age 18 who met the criteria for facial nerve decompression in adults. All underwent decompression via the middle fossa and manifested a lesion of the nerve, ie, edema and hyperemia in the geniculate ganglion, meatal foramen, and internal auditory canal. A discussion of pathogenesis and a literature review is included.

Detailed Radiomorphometric Analysis of the Surgical Corridor for the Suprageniculate Approach.

BACKGROUND: The suprageniculate fossa (SGF) is located between the geniculate ganglion, the middle cranial fossa (MCF) and the anterior semicircular canal (ASCC). An endoscopic transcanal approach has been recently proposed to treat the different lesions in this area. The aim of the study is to describe the anatomical pathway of this approach by measuring the dimensions of its boundaries while checking their correlation with the pneumatization of the SGF area. METHODS: This is a retrospective anatomical analysis of Cone Beam CT scans of 80 patients, for a total of 160 temporal bones analyzed.

Selectively Imaging Cranial Sensory Ganglion Neurons Using AAV-PHP.S.

Because of their ease of use, adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) are indispensable tools for much of neuroscience. Yet AAVs have been used relatively little to study the identities and connectivity of peripheral sensory neurons, principally because methods to selectively target peripheral neurons have been limited. The introduction of the AAV-PHP.S capsid with enhanced tropism for peripheral neurons (Chan et al., 2017) offered a solution, which we further elaborate here. Using AAV-PHP.S with GFP or mScarlet fluorescent proteins, we show that the mouse sensory ganglia for cranial nerves V, VII, IX
