Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping diagnostic services and sub-district administrative boundaries in tuberculosis: A novel attempt from India.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death globally, with India accounting for 25% of the total disease burden. A significant barrier to elimination is delayed or inequitable access to diagnostic services, often accelerated by a lack of granular administrative health boundaries for effective planning. Additionally, identifying the exact locations of TB diagnostic facilities is relevant for understanding the geographic coverage of diagnostic services. METHODS: - Diverse types of data were obtained from multiple health and non-health sources. The study mapped 77 Tuberculosis

Mapping Eastern (EEE) and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitides (VEE) among Equines Using Geographical Information Systems, Colombia, 2008-2019.

INTRODUCTION: Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) viruses are zoonotic pathogens affecting humans, particularly equines. These neuroarboviruses compromise the central nervous system and can be fatal in different hosts. Both have significantly influenced Colombia; however, few studies analyse its behaviour, and none develop maps using geographic information systems to characterise it. OBJECTIVE: To describe the temporal-spatial distribution of those viruses in Colombia between 2008 and 2019. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional descriptiv

Identification of suitable areas for African swine fever occurrence in china using geographic information system-based multi-criteria analysis.

African swine fever (ASF) is a hemorrhagic and fatal disease of domestic pigs and wild boars caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV). There is neither effective treatment nor vaccine at present, and thus this disease has led to major economic losses and adverse impacts on the livelihoods of stakeholders involved in the pork food system in China. In this study, a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method based on a geographic information system (GIS) was used to identify suitable areas for ASF occurrence in China. Ten spatial risk factors regarding ASF epidemic in China were identif

Implementation of geographical information systems for the study of diseases caused by vector-borne arboviruses in Southeast Asia: A review based on the publication record.

The spread of mosquito-borne diseases in Southeast Asia has dramatically increased in the latest decades. These infections include dengue, chikungunya and Japanese Encephalitis (JE), high-burden viruses sharing overlapping disease manifestation and vector distribution. The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to monitor the dynamics of disease and vector distribution can assist in disease epidemic prediction and public health interventions, particularly in Southeast Asia where sustained high temperatures drive the epidemic spread of these mosquito-borne viruses. Due to lack of accurat

Geographical Information Systems in Determination of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Spatial Risk Level Based on Distribution of Vector Species in Imamoglu Province, Adana.

The Imamoglu district located in the southeast of Adana province in Turkey is an endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) owing to dominancy of Phlebotomus tobbi, which is a probable vector of Leishmania infantum. About 11.26% of CL cases reported each year are from Imamoglu, Adana, and between 2008 and 2015, 223 cases of CL were reported. Leishmania infantum, which may be transmitted by P. tobbi, Phlebotomus neglectus/syriacus, and Phlebotomus perfiliewi, is referred as leishmaniasis factor in Adana. Thus, the aim of this study was to map the risk areas for each sand fly species using re

The influence of the built environment on outcomes from a "walking school bus study": a cross-sectional analysis using geographical information systems.

Active commuting to school increases children's daily physical activity. The built environment is associated with children's physical activity levels in cross-sectional studies. This study examined the role of the built environment on the outcomes of a "walking school bus" study. Geographical information systems was used to map out and compare the built environments around schools participating in a pilot walking school bus randomised controlled trial, as well as along school routes. Multi-level modelling was used to determine the built environment attributes associated with the outcomes of ac

Exploring recent spatial patterns of cutaneous leishmaniasis and their associations with climate in some countries of the Middle East using geographical information systems.

This study explores the spatial trends of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and characterises the relationships between the observed spatial patterns and climate in Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia in 2009. Areal interpolation revealed the presence of four major hotspots of relatively high incidence rates covering most parts of Syria, central parts of Iraq, and north-western, central, south-eastern and south-western parts of Saudi Arabia. The severity of these hotspots was seen to decrease from high to low latitudes. The spatial patterns could be partly linked to precipitation (the higher the p

A geographical information system-based multicriteria evaluation to map areas at risk for Rift Valley fever vector-borne transmission in Italy.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a severe mosquito-borne disease that is caused by a Phlebovirus (Bunyaviridae) and affects domestic ruminants and humans. Recently, its distribution widened, threatening Europe. The probability of the introduction and large-scale spread of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in Europe is low, but localized RVF outbreaks may occur in areas where populations of ruminants and potential vectors are present. In this study, we assumed the introduction of the virus into Italy and focused on the risk of vector-borne transmission of RVFV to three main European potential hosts (cat

Geographical information systems and bootstrap aggregation (bagging) of tree-based classifiers for Lyme disease risk prediction in Trentino, Italian Alps.

The risk of exposure to Lyme disease in the province of Trento, Italian Alps, was predicted through the analysis of the distribution of Ixodes ricinus (L.) nymphs infected with Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. with a model based on bootstrap aggregation (bagging) of tree-based classifiers within a geographical information system (GIS). Data on L ricinus density assessed by dragging the vegetation in 438 sites during 1996 were cross-correlated with the digital cartography of a GIS, which included the variables altitude, exposure and slope, substratum, vegetation type and roe deer density. Ticks were m

Leveraging Polio Geographic Information System Platforms in the African Region for Mitigating COVID-19 Contact Tracing and Surveillance Challenges: Viewpoint.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Africa is an urgent public health crisis. Estimated models projected over 150,000 deaths and 4,600,000 hospitalizations in the first year of the disease in the absence of adequate interventions. Therefore, electronic contact tracing and surveillance have critical roles in decreasing COVID-19 transmission; yet, if not conducted properly, these methods can rapidly become a bottleneck for synchronized data collection, case detection, and case management. While the continent is currently reporting relatively low COVID-19 cases, digitized contact tracing

Evaluation of Vulnerability Status of the Infection Risk to COVID-19 Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA): A Case Study of Addis Ababa City, Ethiopia.

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 and is an accidental global public health threat. Because of this, WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. The pandemic is spreading unprecedently in Addis Ababa, which results in extraordinary logistical and management challenges in response to the novel coronavirus in the city. Thus, management strategies and resource allocation need to be vulnerability-oriented. Though various studies have been carried out on COVID-19, only a few studies have been conducted on vulnerability from a geospatial/location-based perspectiv
