Identification of the saccharifying microbiota based on the absolute quantitative analysis in the batch solid-state fermentation system.

The fermentation process of Chinese baijiu, a distinctive example of batch solid-state fermentation (BSSF), involves the recurrent use of the same raw material to optimize starch utilization. However, it is unclear which microorganisms are able to metabolize low concentration starch effectively. In this study, we successfully identified the key saccharifying microbiota that degraded low-concentration starch in the BSSF system by absolute quantification techniques. The results indicated a 61.93 % enhancement in the efficient utilization of starch, absolute quantification combined with correlati

Gut microbiota profile and atopic dermatitis in the first year of life.

The connection between the immune response and the composition of gut microbiota has been associated with an increased prevalence of atopic dermatitis in the first year of life. The study aimed to investigate gut microbiota characteristics in infants with atopic dermatitis compared to healthy infants to better understand the link between early-life microbiota composition and the development of atopic dermatitis. The study analyzed the intestinal microbiota of 121 infants with clinical signs of atopic dermatitis, divided into Group I (infants with atopic dermatitis) and Group II (healthy contro

Think fungus NOT just a crypto-meningitis in AIDS!

UNLABELLED: Extrapulmonary cryptococcosis has been defined as AIDS defining illness in HIV infected people. Cryptococcal meningitis is the commonest meningitis with advanced immune deficiency. Therefore clinicians ask for tests only for detection of cryptococci which may be misleading. A prospective study of suspected fungal meningitis with CSF fungal culture is carried out. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 70 ART naive cases of suspected fungal meningitis in HIV cases were subjected to CSF cytochemistry, smear exam and CSF fungal culture. RESULTS: The CSF culture was positive in 75.6% cases of these 2

COVID 19 Pneumonia and a Rare Form of Fungal Peritonitis in a Patient Survivor on Peritoneal Dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) related peritonitis is usually caused by bacteria, but viruses and fungi could also affect the peritoneal membrane and cause cloudy effluent with negative bacterial cultures. We present a case of a PD patient who survived fungal peritonitis caused by Geotrichum klebahnii (March 2015) and COVID-19 pneumonia (April 2021) with peritonitis probably caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The fungal peritonitis followed one episode of exit-site infection and two episodes of bacterial peritonitis treated with a wide-spectrum antibiotic. The patient's PD catheter was removed immediat

Fungal antigens as a source of sensitization and respiratory disease in Scottish maltworkers.

Mycological and serological studies were carried out as part of a survey of respiratory disease in Scottish maltworkers. 70% of stained sputum smears from 574 workers showed the presence of higher plant cells and/or myclelia, and the spores of common environmental fungi. Penicillium spp. (90%), Rhizopus stolonifer (48%) and yeasts (53%) were the dominant fungi in 699 sputum cultures, and showed a similar proportional distribution in 327 samples of grain, malt, culms and dusts from fifty-six maltings. 57% of 711 men were serologically positive for fungi, 22% for Aspergillus fumigatus, 20% for A

Disseminated Saprochaete capitata Fungemia in Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Case Report and Literature Review From the United Arab Emirates.

Saprochaete capitata (formerly Geotrichum capitatum) is a rare fungal pathogen that predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with hematologic malignancies and prolonged neutropenia. We report a rare case of S. capitata fungemia in a 49-year-old male newly diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), managed in the United Arab Emirates. Despite prophylactic fluconazole during induction chemotherapy, the patient developed persistent febrile neutropenia. Blood cultures drawn from a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) grew yeast, later identified as S. capi

Extraction Methods Shape the Phenolic Composition and Bioactivities of Defatted Moroccan Pistacia lentiscus L. Resin.

Mastic gum from Pistacia lentiscus L. has long been valued in Mediterranean medicine and food preservation, yet its bioactive potential remains underexplored in specific geographic contexts. In Morocco, the resin-locally known as Meska Horra-is abundant but insufficiently characterized. This study compared three extraction methods-cold maceration (CM), Soxhlet extraction (SE), and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE)-using sequential acetone and 70% ethanol to recover complementary phenolic compounds from defatted resin. Targeted UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS profiling identified and quantified 30 phenolics

[Current aspects of invasive diseases caused by Candida and other yeast fungi].

Invasive candidiasis is the most common invasive fungal disease causing an unacceptably high mortality. Candida albicans remains the predominant origin, but an epidemiological shift has been described in the last decades. Some species of Candida have emerged as an important cause of severe candidaemia and can exhibit reduced susceptibility to the current antifungal agents. Candida parapsilosis has been associated with candidaemia in neonates and young adults, whereas Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, and Candida krusei are most frequently isolated in blood cultures from older patients (>65

Utilizing of Nonstarter Lactic Acid Bacteria as Bio-Preservative Agents to Inhibit Microbial Contamination and Extend Yogurt's Shelf Life.

Fungal spoilage significantly affects the quality of dairy products, causing economic losses and health risks due to mycotoxin production. While physical and chemical methods are commonly used to control spoilage, chemical additives may threaten consumer food safety. Due to their antimicrobial properties, lactic acid bacteria like Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus rhamnosus are promising natural preservatives. This study evaluated the efficacy of these two bacteria to prevent mold spoilage and extend the shelf life of yogurt. Results showed that yogurt samples containing these protecti

[Effect of yeast growth limitation on the respiratory chain, the economic coefficient and the critical oxygen concentration for respiration].

The effect of the yeast growth limitation by oxygen on the economical coefficient (EC), the operation of the cyanide resistant electron transport pathway (CrETP), and the critical for respiration oxygen concentration concentration ([O2]cr) was studied. The operation of CrETP was found to differ among various yeasts growing on glucose: it could function during both the exponential phase and limitation of growth (Torulopsis candida), or only in the conditions of growth limitation (Candida tropicalis, C. mycoderma, C. lipolytica), sometimes for a very long period (Endomyces geotrichum); in certai

Antimicrobial Properties and Ecotoxicity of Azo Oxime Ether - Emerging First-in-class Fungicide for Crop Protection.

Currently, the resistance of phytopathogenic fungi to widely used fungicides is increasing. The intensification of agricultural production due to population growth precludes the abandonment of chemical plant protection products. Therefore, the search for new compounds with fungicidal activity represents an urgent research direction. In this study, the biological activity (fungicidal and antimicrobial properties) and ecotoxicological profile of a leading compound from novel fungicide class, azo oxime ethers, were investigated. The test compound (TC) inhibited the growth of several phytopathogen
