Crossover learning of gestures in two ideomotor apraxia patients: A single case experimental design study.

Crossover learning may aid rehabilitation in patients with neurological disorders. Ideomotor apraxia (IMA) is a common sequela of left-brain damage that comprises a deficit in the ability to perform gestures to verbal commands or by imitation. This study elucidated whether crossover learning occurred in two post-stroke IMA patients without motor paralysis after gesture training approximately 2 months after stroke onset. We quantitatively analysed the therapeutic intervention history and investigated whether revised action occurred during gesture production. Treatment intervention was to examin

What can iconic gestures tell us about the language system? A case of conduction aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists rarely analyse iconic gesture when assessing a client with aphasia, despite a growing body of research suggesting that language and gesture are part of either the same system or two highly integrated systems. This may be because there has been limited research that has systematically analysed iconic gesture production by people with aphasia. AIMS: The aim was to determine whether the gesture production of a participant with conduction aphasia was able to provide information about her language system. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The iconic gestures produce

Associations and dissociations of transitive and intransitive gestures in left and right hemisphere stroke patients.

The study investigated performance on pantomime and imitation of transitive and intransitive gestures in 80 stroke patients, 42 with left (LHD) and 38 with right (RHD) hemisphere damage. Patients were also categorized in two groups based on the time that has elapsed between their stroke and the apraxia assessment: acute-subacute (n=42) and chronic (n=38). In addition, patterns of performance in apraxia were examined. We expected that acute-subacute patients would be more impaired than chronic patients and that LHD patients would be more impaired than RHD patients, relative to controls. The hem

Imitating gestures and manipulating a mannikin--the representation of the human body in ideomotor apraxia.

Imitation of meaningless gestures was examined in patients with left brain damage (LBD), right brain damage (RBD) and controls. In addition to imitation on the own body, patients were asked to replicate the gestures on a life-sized mannikin. Manual dexterity was assessed by manipulation of beads, and general visuospatial abilities by block-design. LBD patients who displayed apraxia when imitating gestures on their own bodies scored dramatically worse than any other group when imitation was assessed on the mannikin. By contrast, on block-design and manipulation of beads patients with RBD were i

Elephant gestural communication during agonistic interactions: repertoire, intentionality, and goals.

Goal-directed intentionality is the ability to communicate with the intention of eliciting reactions from recipients. Long considered uniquely human, today it has been reported in the signalling of several species, most notably in the large, flexible gestural repertoires of non-human apes. Semi-captive elephants have also shown goal-directed intentionality when gesturing to humans. However, whether wild elephants gesture intentionally to conspecifics has not been systematically explored. Elephants frequently engage in agonistic interactions, in which goal-directed intentional communication may

Smartphone Acoustic Sensing for Contactless Respiration Monitoring and Gesture-Based Authentication.

This paper presents a smartphone-based sonar-sensing system for contactless monitoring of respiration and gesture-based user activity, using a single commercial phone with no hardware modification. A 20 kHz audio signal is transmitted from the phone's speaker and reflections are captured by its microphone; motion-induced Doppler shifts are recovered using an envelope detection method that removes the need for a reference copy of the transmitted signal and improves robustness to transmitter frequency drift. Actuator experiments at a target distance around 50 cm demonstrated motion sensitivity a

DXSP: gesture-only temporal localization of decisive moments in dyadic persuasion.

Persuasive systems must detect user engagement in real time in order to adapt their strategy. Existing methods rely primarily on facial expressions or voice signals. Both raise privacy concerns and degrade under low video quality, motion blur, and ambient noise. Body gestures offer a privacy-preserving alternative, since skeleton representations do not encode identifiable facial features. What is missing is a method that localizes the specific moments at which gesture matters, rather than averaging behavior across the whole interaction. We introduce Dyadic Cross-Sparse Pooling (DXSP), a gestur

Child Deictic Gesture Use and Maternal Labeling in Toddlers With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between the deictic gesture use of toddlers with Down syndrome (DS) and their mothers' use of labels. Relationships between child and maternal deictic gestures; maternal use of labels; and broader, traditional measures of maternal linguistic input were explored. METHOD: Participants were 25 toddlers with DS (14-31 months) and their mothers. Videos of a 15-min mother-child free-play were coded for child and maternal deictic gesture use. All maternal utterances were transcribed and coded to compute the number of complete and in

Empowering healthcare: Secure hand gesture authentication in medical IoT with sEMG.

Enhancing information security via reliable user authentication in wireless body area network (WBAN)-based Internet of Things (IoT) applications has garnered increasing attention. Traditional biometric methods, like fingerprint recognition, carry significant privacy risks because they cannot be cancelled or changed. Once a biometric template is exposed, it cannot be replaced, leading to potential privacy violations. Addressing these challenges, this study proposes a novel Secure EMG Framework, a cancellable biometric modality using surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals encoded by hand gesture

Aberrant gesture use in autism spectrum disorders is unrelated to motor abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Gesture deficits are well-documented in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet research in adults with ASD remains limited. Understanding the nature of gesture deficits in adulthood is essential for identifying their underlying mechanisms and potential impact on communication and daily functioning. The aim of the current study examines gesture performance in adults with ASD to explore whether these deficits persist beyond childhood and how they relate to motor impairments. METHODS: We included 19 patients diagnosed with ASD and 19 age-and-gender matched controls. Gesture p

Unveiling EMG semantics: a prototype-learning approach to generalizable gesture classification.

Objective.Upper limb loss can profoundly impact an individual's quality of life, posing challenges to both physical capabilities and emotional well-being. To restore limb function by decoding electromyography (EMG) signals, in this paper, we present a novel deep prototype learning method for accurate and generalizable EMG-based gesture classification. Existing methods suffer from limitations in generalization across subjects due to the diverse nature of individual muscle responses, impeding seamless applicability in broader populations.Approach.By leveraging deep prototype learning, we introdu

Topology of surface electromyogram signals: hand gesture decoding on Riemannian manifolds.

Objective. Decoding gestures from the upper limb using noninvasive surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals is of keen interest for the rehabilitation of amputees, artificial supernumerary limb augmentation, gestural control of computers, and virtual/augmented realities. We show that sEMG signals recorded across an array of sensor electrodes in multiple spatial locations around the forearm evince a rich geometric pattern of global motor unit (MU) activity that can be leveraged to distinguish different hand gestures.Approach. We demonstrate a simple technique to analyze spatial patterns of muscle

Assessment and treatment of gesture in neurogenic communication disorders: An international survey of practice.

BACKGROUND: Gesture and speech collaborate in conveying meaning, and gesture is often leveraged by people with neurogenic communication disorders, such as aphasia, cognitive-communicative impairments and primary progressive aphasia, when words fail them. Because gesture is imagistic, transitory and holistic, there are inherent challenges when assessing and treating it. AIMS: The survey had three primary research questions: (1) what gesture assessment practices, and (2) what gesture treatment practices, are employed by speech and language therapists (SLTs) internationally; and (3) what are the

Gesture profiles distinguish primary progressive aphasia variants: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by progressive language deficits. The main variants of PPA -semantic (svPPA), logopenic (lvPPA), and nonfluent (nfvPPA)- can be challenging to distinguish. Limb apraxia often co-occurs with PPA, but it is unclear whether PPA variants are associated with different gesture deficits. Prior evidence from stroke indicates that temporal lobe lesions are associated with reduced benefit from meaning in gesture performance. Temporal lesions are also associated with greater deficits in hand postures compared to a

PDMS-embedded wearable FBG sensors for gesture recognition and communication assistance.

This study introduces fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) silicone elastomer specifically engineered for recognizing intricate gestures like wrist pitch, finger bending, and mouth movement. Sensors with different PDMS patch thicknesses underwent evaluation including thermal, tensile strain, and bending deformation characterization, demonstrating a stability of at least four months. Experiments revealed the FBG sensors' accurate wrist pitch recognition across participants after calibration, confirmed by statistical metrics and Bland-Altman plots. Utilizing

Using virtual reality to assess gesture performance deficits in schizophrenia patients.

INTRODUCTION: Gesture performance deficits are prevalent in schizophrenia patients and are strongly associated with poor social communication skills and community functioning, affecting their overall quality of life. Currently, video-recording technology is widely used in clinical settings to assess gesture production deficits in schizophrenia patients. Nevertheless, the subjective evaluation of video-recordings can encumber task assessment. The present study will aim to use virtual reality to examine its potential use as an alternative tool to objectively measure gesture performance accuracy

Self-Inflicted Traumatic Bilateral Upper Extremity Amputation as a Suicidal Gesture?

Traumatic amputations are partial or complete dismemberment of part of the human body (usually one limb) due to an injury that involves a component of blunt force trauma. It is usually caused by accidental events and only very rarely due to suicidal events. A 37-year-old female with major depressive disorder attempted suicide by placing her forearms on a railroad track, resulting in traumatic bilateral upper extremity amputations. Emergency Department resuscitation was initiated as the patient was taken immediately to the operating room; however, restoration of the limbs was unfeasible, and th

The interactive effect of empathy and motor cortex stimulation on hand gesture comprehension.

Previous research has demonstrated that the Action-Observation Network (AON) is involved in both emotional-embodiment (empathy) and action-embodiment mechanisms. In the current study, we hypothesized that interfering with the AON will impair action recognition and that this impairment will be modulated by empathy levels. Fifty-two participants conducted a semantic decision task of hand gesture recognition, while we interfered with the AON by applying active (n = 26) or sham (n = 26) transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) to the hand area of the primary motor cortex. We found that inter

Using Gesture To Identify and Address Early Concerns About Language and Pragmatics.

Speakers and signers naturally and spontaneously gesture when they use language to communicate. These gestures not only play a central role in how language is used in social situations but also offer insight into speakers' and signers' cognitive processes. The goals of this article are twofold: (1) to document how gesture can be used to identify concerns in language development and (2) to illustrate how gesture can be used to address those concerns, particularly with respect to pragmatic development. These goals are explored in this article, with a focus on deaf and/or hard of hearing (DHH) ch

The loud scratch: a newly identified gesture of Sumatran orangutan mothers in the wild.

The communicative function of primates' self-directed behaviours like scratching has gained increasing attention in recent years, but their intentional use is still debated. Here, we addressed this issue by exploring the communicative function of 'loud scratches' in wild Sumatran orangutans. Building on previous studies in chimpanzees, we examined the prediction that audio-visual loud scratches are used communicatively in mother-infant travel coordination. Specifically, we examined whether individual, social and scratch features affected the use of pre-move scratches, markers of intentional si
