Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large-vessel vasculitis commonly affecting those above the age of 50 years. GCA presents with systemic inflammation and/or local ischemic symptoms, including the risk of visual loss. Scalp and lingual ischemia are rare but severe manifestations of GCA that can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Here we report the cases of two elderly women presenting with necrosis of the scalp and tongue respectively - emphasizing the need to suspect and identify the various manifestations of this complex disease. Treatment r

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a relapsing large vessel vasculitis with risk of serious ischemic manifestations, including vision loss and vascular damage in the form of large artery stenosis, aneurysms, and dissections. Approximately 50% of patients treated with glucocorticoid (GC) monotherapy and 30% of patients receiving adjunctive therapy with tocilizumab experience disease relapses, often during the first 2 years after diagnosis. Although most relapses in GCA do not involve life- or organ-threatening presentations and can be controlled successfully, frequent relapses may lead to increased

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCT-TS) is a benign, slow-growing lesion originating from the tendon sheath or adjacent bursal tissue. We present a series of four histologically confirmed cases with atypical presentations in the foot and hand. Clinical features included a slow-growing, painless mass, often associated with prior trauma. All patients underwent surgical excision, with histopathology confirming GCT-TS. This report emphasizes the importance of considering GCT-TS in the differential diagnosis of soft-tissue swellings in tendon-rich areas and highlights the role of surgery as

Since its first clinical description in 1890, extensive research has advanced our understanding of giant cell arteritis, leading to improvements in both diagnosis and management for affected patients. Imaging studies have shown that the disease frequently extends beyond the typical cranial arteries, also affecting large vessels such as the aorta and its proximal branches. Meanwhile, advances in comprehending the underlying pathophysiology of giant cell arteritis have given rise to numerous potential therapeutic agents, which aim to minimise the need for glucocorticoid treatment and prevent fla

Ultrasound (US) is being increasingly used to diagnose Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA). The traditional diagnostic Gold Standard has been temporal artery biopsy (TAB), but this is expensive, invasive, has a false-negative rate as high as 60% and has little impact on clinical decision-making. A non-compressible halo with a thickened intima-media complex (IMC) is the sonographic hallmark of GCA. The superficial temporal arteries (STA) and axillary arteries (AA) are the most consistently inflamed arteries sonographically and imaging protocols for evaluating suspected GCA should include at least these

The case of a 75-year-old woman diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), treated with low doses of prednisone, and with clinical and analytical remission is reported. Two years later, she presented with a clinical picture of giant cell arteritis (GCA), including headache, diplopia, jaw pain, feeling of swelling in both temples, and elevation of acute phase reactants. Symptoms spontaneously subsided 2 weeks later, while analytical parameters improved without any treatment. A high-resolution colour Doppler ultrasound showed thickening of the intima-media complex with 'halo' sign in the right

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic vasculitis that affects large vessels. Cardiovascular complications that develop with GCA have high morbidity and can be fatal. The aim of this work was to discuss epidemiology, clinical picture, etiopathology and risk of development of cardiovascular complications in GCA.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A literature review was performed for 2002 to 2021 using PubMed and Medline scientific search databases. The following keywords were used to search academic journal databases: "giant cell arteritis", "heart attack", "cardiovascular system", "aortic

ABSTRACT: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic granulomatous vasculitis affecting the medium and large-size arteries, and may present with a range of ophthalmic findings. This review will cover GCA epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and treatment.
EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: GCA is commonly found in elderly patients and individuals of Scandinavian descent. Recent publications suggest it may be more common in African Americans and Hispanics than previously thought. It is very rare in Asian and Middle-Eastern populations, and there is little data

Giant cell urothelial carcinoma is a rare variant of bladder cancer recognized by the current World Health Organization classification of urologic tumours. It is an aggressive tumour with a poor prognosis that usually presents at an advanced stage. It is characterized histologically by pleomorphic giant cells. We discuss a case of giant cell urothelial carcinoma presenting at an early stage in a previously well 62-year-old woman. Histology showed a tumour comprising pancytokeratin positive bizarre mononuclear and multi-nuclear giant cells admixed with areas of conventional urothelial carcinoma

The term giant cell-rich tumors of bone refers to a shared morphologic pattern in a group of different osseous lesions, that is, the abundance of osteoclastlike giant cells. Fitting with a broad spectrum of clinical presentations and biological behavior, the recent detection of characteristic molecular alterations in giant cell tumor of bone (H3-3), nonossifying fibroma (KRAS, FGFR1), giant cell granuloma of the jaws (KRAS, FGFR1, TRPV4), and aneurysmal bone cyst (USP6) have contributed significantly to the biological understanding of these morphologically related but clinically distinct lesio

Cholestatic jaundice in new born and infants results from biliary obstruction or hepatocellular dysfunction. Biliary atresia (BA) and Idiopathic neonatal hepatitis comprises the major aetiology. Cholestasis due to toxins is rare in infants. Indian childhood cirrhosis (ICC) and ICC like diseases have been described in infants. Herein, authors are describing a case of infantile cholestasis presenting at 4 months of age who was diagnosed to have copper related hepatotoxicosis on liver biopsy. Copper tumblers were used for preparation of formula milk that likely was the source of exogenous copper

In this report, the authors describe a child presenting at 6 months old with a rapidly expanding extracranial left temporal mass concerning for malignancy. The mass was successfully treated at 16 months with radical surgical excision. The patient was found to have a tenosynovial giant cell tumor, diffuse type, completely encased by the temporalis muscle. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a case of diffuse type tenosynovial giant cell tumor in the temporalis muscle, without articular involvement, presenting in an infant.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize recent advances in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA).
RECENT FINDINGS: Less common manifestations of GCA include corneal edema, proptosis from lacrimal gland ischemia and sensorineuronal hearing loss. Histology studies have suggested that temporal artery biopsies (TAB) with fixed specimen lengths of 15 mm may be adequate to prevent false negative biopsies. In centers with appropriate radiologic expertise, a European rheumatology consensus guideline has proposed Doppler ultrasound as a first-line confirmatory test for GCA in lieu of temporal artery bio

Giant cell tumor of the larynx is a rare tumor. It was first reported by Wessely et al in 1940. Thirty-nine cases have been reported until now and together with the current case 2 recurrences were encountered. In this case report, our aim was to discuss conservative management because of the suspicion of recurrence. A 70-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of hoarseness. A tumor measuring 1 × 1 cm located in the anterior half right vocal fold and extending to the anterior comissure was found on laryngeal endoscopy. Direct laryngoscopy and biopsy of the mass reve

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common vasculitis in adults aged ≥ 50 years in Europe. Recently, colour Doppler ultrasonography (CDS) and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) have improved the diagnostic sensitivity. The aim of our study was to determine the incidence of GCA in a well-defined Slovenian region, supported by the temporal artery (TA) biopsy (TAB) or CDS or PET/CT. This prospective study was conducted at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, the only secondary/tertiary centre in the region, serving a population of 323,297 residents aged ≥ 50 years. P

Giant cell arteritis is a systemic immune-mediated vasculitis affecting the medium and large arteries. Typical symptoms include new headache, jaw claudication, tender temporal artery, polymyalgia rheumatica, fever and anorexia. Visual loss resulting from giant cell arteritis is an ophthalmic emergency and requires immediate assessment and referral to the ophthalmologist for prompt treatment with steroids. This article provides a systematic approach to the diagnosis and management of giant cell arteritis.

Actinic granuloma and annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma are different terms used to define skin lesions characterized by elastolysis, elastophagocytosis, and multinucleated giant cell infiltrate. The clinical appearance varies from papules to annular plaques. Although elastolytic actinic giant cell granuloma shares some clinical features with granuloma annulare, they can be differentiated by histopathologic findings. The disease is initiated by an immune response triggered by different factors that alter the elastic tissue. The course tends to be chronic, with variable response to treat
