A case is reported of a 15 mm paper point found in the periapical area of a maxillary right central incisor during endodontic surgery for an unresolved periapical radiolucency. The paper point had been present for between five and nine years. Histopathological examination showed the presence of chronically inflamed fibrous connective tissue with a number of foreign body giant cells and focal collections of chronic inflammatory cells. SEM comparison of the specimen with a similarly treated fresh paper point showed no indication of degradation of the paper point by host defense cells.

Among various biomaterials, we focused on nanofiber-based polyglycolic acid (PGA) fabric and examined the dynamics of cells that migrate within the non-woven fabric after implantation. The efficacy of nano-PGA as a tissue reinforcement in the process of subcutaneous tissue repair was immunohistochemically investigated. Two types of clinically available PGA non-woven sheet (nano-PGA: fiber diameter = 2.0 μm, conventional PGA: fiber diameter = 14.2 μm) were used and subcutaneously implanted in rats. Samples were collected 3 days, and 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after the implantation to perform histolo

Soft tissue reactions to paraffin include inflammation, fibrosis, disfigurement, and granulomatous inflammation with foreign body giant cell reaction. The authors report the case of a 77-year-old woman with cutaneous marginal zone B cell lymphoma located on glabella, arising in association with underlying paraffinoma. While it is unclear whether the implant directly contributed to the development of lymphoma, this association has not been previously documented, prompting this report.

This study reports that a methacrylic acid (MAA)-based copolymer coating generates constructive remodeling of polypropylene (PP) surgical mesh in a subcutaneous model. This coating is non-bioresorbable and follows the architecture of the mesh without impeding connective tissue integration. Following implantation, the tissue response is biased toward vascularization instead of fibrosis. The vessel density around the MAA mesh is double that of the uncoated mesh two weeks after implantation. This initial vasculature regresses after two weeks while mature vessels remain, suggesting an enhanced hea

The use of biomaterials and implants for joint replacement, fracture fixation, spinal stabilization and other orthopedic indications has revolutionized patient care by reliably decreasing pain and improving function. These surgical procedures always invoke an acute inflammatory reaction initially, that in most cases, readily subsides. Occasionally, chronic inflammation around the implant develops and persists; this results in unremitting pain and compromises function. The etiology of chronic inflammation may be specific, such as with infection, or be unknown. The histological hallmarks of chro

Alvogyl dressing is used to help control hemostasis, foster healing, and prevent complications after certain oral procedures. It is a paste composed of different antiseptic and analgesic substances, and fern-derived Penghawar djambi fibers that have styptic properties. It is claimed to be a resorbable and self-eliminating paste with little complications. However, some studies have demonstrated detrimental effects. We report 3 cases of postextraction nonhealing sockets after Alvogyl dressing. Histologically, they demonstrated residual Alvogyl fibers with foreign body giant cell stromal reaction

Implanted medical devices, from artificial heart valves and arthroscopic joints to implantable sensors, often induce a foreign body response (FBR), a form of chronic inflammation resulting from the inflammatory reaction to a persistent foreign stimulus. The FBR is characterized by a subset of multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) formed by macrophage fusion, the foreign body giant cells (FBGCs), accompanied by inflammatory cytokines, matrix deposition, and eventually deleterious fibrotic implant encapsulation. Despite efforts to improve biocompatibility, implant-induced FBR persists, compromising

Biochemical, histologic, and immunohistochemical analyses were performed on 34 interface membranes obtained from 33 patients during revision total knee arthroplasty. The membranes had surrounded components of cementless (n = 11) and cemented (n = 23) knee prostheses that were aseptically loose. None of these implant failures was caused by catastrophic polyethylene erosion leading to metal-to-metal contact. The histologic findings were similar in the membranes from cemented and cementless knee components: small polyethylene debris within macrophages and large birefringent polyethylene debris wi

We report a case of latent cardiac sarcoidosis in reference to differential diagnosis from giant cell myocarditis. A 68-year-old woman succumbed to subarachnoid hemorrhage and acute myocardial infarction within a period of 3 days. Autopsy revealed white fibrotic lesions in the lateral wall of the left ventricle and interventricular septum of the heart in addition to acute myocardial infarction of the anterior wall. Histology showed fibrotic granulomatous lesions with infiltration of lymphocytes and epithelioid cells. Many multinucleated giant cells of Langhans and foreign body types were scatt

The patient was a 61-year-old man who developed gossypiboma of the left thigh and femur resulting in the imaging appearances of a malignant surface tumor. He had a past history of surgery on the left femur for open fracture 40 years previously. Radiographs and CT showed a soft tissue mass with osteolysis and periosteal thickening of the left femur. On MRI, the mass showed heterogeneous signal intensity with contrast enhancement at the periphery, suggesting a malignancy. 99mTc-HMDP bone scintigraphy showed a faint ring-like uptake, but thallium -201 scintigraphy did not show any uptake in the t

Equine sarcoidosis is a rare disorder usually characterized by exfoliative dermatitis, moderate to severe wasting, and sarcoidal granulomatous inflammation of multiple organ systems. It has an unknown aetiopathogenesis. The condition is not related to equine sarcoid. This case report describes generalized cutaneous and systemic sarcoidosis in an 11-year-old Trakehner mare (case A) and in a 7-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (case B). Case A was presented with cutaneous sarcoidosis on the head and body and was diagnosed on the basis of histological examination of skin. Case B presented with mul

A strip of partially hydrolyzed poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) containing 65%-75% H2O was implanted into the anterior eye chamber of 11 Chinchilla rabbits. No pathological changes were found in the iris or in the ciliary body. The pathological findings in the cornea accompanying implantation of a hydrogel strip to the anterior chamber were rare and not significant. The low occurrence of the foreign body giant multinucleate cells was observed on the implant surface 6 months after the implantation. Favorable properties of this hydrogel depend probably on its high water and acidic groups cont

Cholesterol granuloma is a foreign-body giant cell reaction that can occur in response to the presence of cholesterol crystals. They are usually found in the middle ear, paranasal sinuses or mastoid process due to chronic inflammation. Presentation in the prevascular mediastinum is a rare finding. We describe a case of a cholesterol granuloma located in the prevascular mediastinum in a symptomatic 57-year-old male patient.

A fine needle aspiration specimen from the right lung of a 44-year-old former drug addict was submitted for cytologic evaluation. The specimen consisted of numerous mononucleate and multinucleate macrophages containing aggregates of silicate crystals, as seen by light microscopic examination using a polarizing filter. The background of the slides included fibroblasts, lymphocytes and other inflammatory cells. The finding within foreign-body giant cells of large groups of strongly birefringent, platelike crystals varying widely in size led to the conclusive cytologic diagnosis of intravenous ta

Cholesterol granuloma formation is an unusual development in the advanced stage of mammary duct ectasia. Its recognition is important because it can be clinically, mammographically, and grossly confused with carcinoma. Five such cases thought clinically to be carcinoma are presented. The histologic findings in cholesterol granuloma are distinctive and consist of multiple cholesterol crystals arranged either singly or in tightly-packed arrays. Foreign body giant cells surrounding the cholesterol deposits are invariably present.

Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma is a rare disease marked by yellowish-brown plaques with destructive growth and a tendency to ulceration, which shows a characteristic histopathological pattern of palisading granuloma with foam cells, Touton's and foreign-body giant cells, bizarre multinuclear giant cells, cholesterol clefts and marked necrobiosis of the connective tissue. Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma is associated with IgG paraproteinaemia, and occasionally with an IgA paraproteinaemia. Ocular symptoms and visceral involvement are common. We report a case of a 53-year-old woman with periorbital nec

Coevolution of hosts and their parasites has shaped heterogeneity of effector hemocyte types, providing immune defense reactions with variable effectiveness. In this work, we characterize hemocytes of Drosophila willistoni, a species that has evolved a cellular immune system with extensive variation and a high degree of plasticity. Monoclonal antibodies were raised and used in indirect immunofluorescence experiments to characterize hemocyte subpopulations, follow their functional features and differentiation. Pagocytosis and parasitization assays were used to determine the functional character

This report is concerned with tissue reaction to silicone and, in particular, long-term foreign body reaction. A histopathologic study was done on the larynx of a patient who had been injected 12 years before in the right vocal fold with room temperature vulcanizing silicone. The examination revealed particles of silicone encapsulated by thin fibrous tissue. There were few giant cells of the foreign body type and little cell infiltration. In addition, a questionnaire was returned by 54 of 90 patients who had vocal fold injected with less than 1.5 mL of either silicone fluid or room temperature

Cutaneous histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare malignant tumor. An 82-year-old woman presented with a 4 × 2-cm irregular-shaped red nodule on the left posterior scalp. A biopsy specimen revealed sheets of pleomorphic atypical cells in the dermis and subcutis. A diagnosis of HS was made based on the results of a panel of immunohistochemical stains that revealed positivity of leukocyte common antigen, CD4, CD163, and HLA-DR. At the time of resection, the tumor grew rapidly to 12 × 6.5 × 5 cm in size in 2 months. The resected tumor comprised round, oval, plasmacytoid, and spindled cells. Signet-rin

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) usually manifests as a transmural vascular infiltrate of mononuclear and multinucleated giant cells (MNGC). We describe six patients with GCA associated with severe cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), all with cerebral hemorrhage or varying degrees of cerebral infarct, and histological evidence of Alzheimer's disease (cortical CAA often predominating over senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles). One case showed mostly cortical involvement (with old microhemorrhages), and the others were primarily leptomeningeal (with involvement of the underlying cortex and extens
