Clinical studies have shown that oral tissues can be affected by pregnancy. Pregnancy-related changes are most frequent and most marked in gingival tissue. Pregnancy does not cause gingivitis, but may aggravate pre-existing disease. The most marked changes are seen in gingival vasculature. Characteristic of pregnancy gingivitis is that the gingiva is dark red, swollen, smooth and bleeds easily. Women with pregnancy gingivitis may sometimes develop localized gingival enlargements. The gingival changes usually resolve within a few months of delivery if local irritants are eliminated. The inflamm

A 4-year-old boy presented with his mother to genetics in the 1980s, with a family history (FH) of macrocephaly and intellectual disability (ID). He remained undiagnosed until his mother developed multiple cancers and was diagnosed with Cowden syndrome (CS) in 2017, a rare, multisystem cancer predisposition syndrome. CS was then confirmed in multiple family members. Clinical examination revealed potentially novel features; gingival enlargement, dental abnormalities and joint hyperextensibility. These features could contribute to revised PTEN hamartoma tumour syndrome, National Comprehensive Ca

Leukemia is a hematological disorder arises from a hematopoietic stem cell characterized by a disordered differentiation and proliferation of neoplastic cells. Rapidly forming generalized gingival hyperplasia is usually the first sign of this disease (especially in acute forms). This case report describes a 54-year-old female who presented rapid gingival enlargement in only three weeks time, heralding the presence of acute monocytic leukemia (AML-FAB M5). The patient was immediately referred for hematologic management, but died five weeks later. Dentists and generalists should always be on gua

Lymphoblastic lymphoma-leukemia (LBLL) most commonly presents with mediastinal masses (50-75%), while pleural and pericardial effusion may also be present. Lymphadenopathy usually in the neck, axilla or supraclavicular regions, is considered as another typical presentation of the disease. This is a case report of a six-year-old boy with unusual huge enlargement of maxilla, mandible and soft palate as well as gingival hypertrophy which led to secondary respiratory and feeding difficulties. Morphologic and flowcytometric evaluation of bone marrow aspiration showed that it was a T cell type acute

Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) is a rare systemic disease characterized by papulonodular skin lesions, gingival hyperplasia, joint contractures, and osteolytic lesions on long bones and the skull. It has recently been reported that the disease is caused by mutations in the gene encoding capillary morphogenesis protein-2 (CMG-2). To date, fewer than 60 cases have been published in the literature. Partial disease expression is common, but no cases featuring a solitary calvarial lesion have been reported. The authors discuss this 4-year-old boy with a solitary calvarial osteolytic lesion who

Kindler's syndrome occurred in a 13-year-old boy with parental consanguinity. The patient had acral congenital blistering and photosensitivity, both regressive, at 12 years of age, together with diffuse progressive poikiloderma, marked cutaneous atrophy, mild hyperkeratosis of the palms, gingival hypertrophy and fragility, and anal stenosis. The ultrastructural study of bullae induced by rubbing showed clefts in three levels of the dermoepidermal junction zone. A review of 14 cases in the literature consistent with Kindler's syndrome showed this to be a definite clinical entity among the other

This is the report of a case of four upper incisors with multiple internal/external resorptions after a falling accident in the childhood and subsequent violation of the biologic width by incorrect individual coronal restorations. Endodontic orthograde retreatment was performed and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was placed as apical plug and to repair the large internal resorption. In order to re-establish the biologic width, a controlled surgical crown-lengthening procedure was performed. The expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 in the gingival tissue was used as a biomarker for t

OBJECTIVE: The dental and periodontal impact of GH/IGF-1 hypersecretion has been poorly investigated until now. Our aim is to precisely describe the oro-dental state of acromegalic patients and to study the impact of GH/IGF-1 hypersecretion on patients' reported oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL).
METHODS: After collecting characteristics of their disease, acromegalic patients answered the GOHAI questionnaire assessing their OHRQoL, the AcroQoL questionnaire and then benefited from a complete stomatological and radiological examination (orthopantomogram systematically, retro-alveola

A 52-year-old man presented with a chronic erosive gingivitis associated with eroded genital lesions which caused preputial adhesions. Histological examination of the gingival lesions showed typical changes of erosive lichen planus. A few months later, pseudo-peladic alopecia of the vertex and lichen planus lesions of the mouth appeared. Local steroids were ineffective to treat oral erosions, but the lesions were not painful. After one year, all changes remained unchanged. We therefore propose the diagnosis of erosive lichen planus involving the mucous membranes of mouth and genitalia; this as

BACKGROUND: Congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL), or Berardinelli-Seip congenital lipodystrophy (BSCL), is a rare disorder characterized by the absence of body fat and resistance to insulin. Other manifestations, such as acanthosis nigricans, hepatomegaly, hyperandrogenism, muscular hypertrophy, and diabetes mellitus may be seen. Although the general clinical picture of this disease has already been characterized, there has yet been no description of the dental manifestations of individuals with this disease.
METHODS: Eight patients with BSCL were assessed (4 adults and 4 children/adole

Gum hypertrophy is a very frequent condition linked to orthodontic treatment, especially in teenagers, and the same time, about 80% of young adults are affected by acne vulgaris, a chronic inflammatory skin disease, typically treated with antibacterial therapy. The use of probiotics has gained popularity in the medical field, and many studies have demonstrated its effectiveness, such as the positive effects of some bacterial strains belonging to Lactobacillus species. The aim of this study is to document the effect of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) on facial skin that was randomly observed

Lipoid proteinosis is a rare autosomal recessive heritable disease. Clinical features are hoarseness starting in infancy and the formation of yellowish papules and plaques on the skin and mucous membranes of the nose, oral cavity, pharynx and larynx. Light and electron microscopy demonstrates a subepithelial accumulation of PAS-positive (hyaline) material around blood vessels and in the dermis. This case is unusual in that the gingiva is also involved in the lipoid proteinosis.

GATA2 mutations have been identified in various diseases, such as MonoMAC syndrome, Emberger syndrome, familial myelodysplastic syndrome, acute myeloid leukaemia and dendritic cell, monocyte, B-cell and natural killer-cell deficiency. These syndromes present a wide range of clinical features, dominated by severe infections and haematological disorders such as myelodysplastic syndrome. Up to 70% of patients with GATA2 mutations have dermatological features, mainly genital or extragenital warts, panniculitis or erythema nodosum and lymphoedema. We report three patients presenting with common der

The monitoring of immunosuppressive therapy may involve the cardiologist in various settings. TNF inhibitors are contra-indicated in patients with NYHA III-IV cardiac failure. This contra-indication is not absolute for etanercept. In patients with milder forms of cardiac failure, TNF inhibitors can be prescribed in the absence of alternative therapy. A cardiac follow-up is necessary in this situation. Cyclosporine and tacrolimus are both nephrotoxic and hypertensive drugs. For the treatment of arterial hypertension induced by the immunosuppressive therapy, first-line recommended drugs are calc

Winchester syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, one of the inherited osteolysis disorders which are a group of diseases characterized by destruction and resorption of affected bones with consequent skeletal deformities and functional impairment. The syndrome is characterized by dissolution of carpal and tarsal bones with generalized osteoporosis, progressive joint contractures, short stature, peripheral corneal opacities, and coarse facial features, though there is variability within the clinical features. Phenotypic heterogeneity of cutaneous features are also reported to date of diffusely th

Gingival fibromatosis is frequently an isolated condition, but rarely associated with some uncommon syndromes. This paper describes an 11-year-old patient with pronounced gingival enlargement, cherubic facial appearance, and psychomotor retardation and discusses the major aspects of the case. The most striking finding orally was the presence of grossly hyperplastic gingiva, which completely covered all teeth except the occlusal surfaces of some teeth. The swelling in the lower part of the face and the appearance of sclera beneath the iris suggest cherubism. The diagnosis was confirmed by the d
