Localized aggressive periodontitis associated with unusual gingival enlargement posing a diagnostic dilemma: a case report.

This is a case report of localized aggressive periodontitis associated with unusual gingival enlargement. There was difficulty both clinically and histologically in deciding whether the gingival enlargement was a pyogenic granuloma or a Kaposi sarcoma. The diagnosis of Kaposi sarcoma was eventually ruled out by the failure of immunohistopathological examination to demonstrate the presence of HHV-8 DNA markers, and by the clinical response of the lesions to antimicrobial agents. Once a definitive diagnosis was made, the patient was treated conventionally.

Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma in cyclosporine-induced gingival overgrowth. A case report.

An unusual solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma developed in the gingiva of a 28 year-old male renal transplant patient with cyclosporine (CyA)-induced gingival overgrowth. On initial presentation, there was no suspicion of a tumor within the lesion. One year later, however, the lesion had increased progressively in size, and its surface was ulcerated. At this time, the lesion was excised by gingivectomy, and histopathological examination revealed plasmacytoma. CyA was discontinued and the patient has been closely observed for 4 years with no recurrence of the gingival lesion.

Rare angiofibrolipoma of the oral cavity: a case report.

Angiofibrolipomas are one of the rarest variants of lipoma, a benign mesenchymal tumor composed of adipose tissue. Histologic examination of angiofibrolipomas reveals mature adipocytes, vascular tissue, and fibrous connective tissue. This case report describes an angiofibrolipoma in the oral cavity of a 40-year-old woman. A soft, painless, pedunculated mass was attached to the distolingual gingiva in the region of the mandibular third molar. The provisional diagnosis was pyogenic granuloma. The mass was excised using electrocautery, and the tissue was submitted for histologic examination. Hist

Periodontal diseases in HIV-infected patients.

Periodontal diseases may be the first clinical sign of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infection. Since the immunosuppression and subsequent susceptibility may alter the responses of the oral tissues as well as the microflora, both periodontal treatment and result of therapy may be modified. The periodontal diseases in HIV-seropositive patients include common as well as less conventional forms of gingivitis and periodontitis, and bacterial, mycotic and viral infections are seen. Neoplasias may also involve the periodontium; most common are Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Recent

[Bacillary angiomatosis of the oral cavity in AIDS. A differential diagnosis of mucosal Kaposi's sarcoma].

The diagnosis of bacillary angiomatosis (BA) was performed on a biopsy of a reddish nodular lesion of the gingival mucosa, in a patient seropositive for the H.I.V. It was based on the histopathological features, and by the demonstration of bacilli both on the Warthin-Starry stain and the electron microscopic study. A treatment by erythromycin was quickly effective. BA is an opportunistic infection seen essentially in patients with A.I.D.S., most often causing cutaneous involvement. The causative pathogen is Rochalimaea henselae. BA of the oral cavity is very rare. This infection can be mistake

Recurrent Gingival Squamous Papilloma: A Rare Finding in a Child.

Gingival squamous papilloma (SP) is a mucocutanous, benign proliferation rarely seen in the pediatric population. The majority of publications of affected younger patients have been confined to datasets from clinicopathologic investigations. A limited number of case reports in this age group have appeared in the literature, usually featuring primary gingival lesions. Recognition of recurrent gingival SPs in pediatric patients has been underappreciated. The purpose of this report is to present the case of a four-year-old boy with a gingival SP that recurred twice within 18 months and to increas

Congenital epulis of the jaw: a series of five cases and review of literature.

This article describes five cases of congenital epulis, a rare and benign swelling in the mouth of a newborn, which is not widely known. We present five cases: four cases presented as single pedunculated nodules of the gingiva and in one case two nodules were present. Of all, 50% were located at the maxilla. Excision was performed in four of the five cases and in one case, spontaneous regression was awaited. No recurrence was reported. The characteristic features of congenital epulis are a pedunculated, flesh-pink coloured tumour with a predominant occurrence on the anterior maxillary alveolar

Oral Mucosal Melanoma.

PURPOSE: Primary oral mucosal melanoma (OMM) is a rare neoplasm accounting for the 0.2% to 0.8% of all melanomas. The aim of the present manuscript is (1) to describe 2 cases of primary OMM treated at our department, and (2) to perform a systematic literature review on primary OMM occurrence and treatment. METHODS: Two cases of primary OMM were described. A systematic review is presented in order to assess the treatment options, recurrence, metastasis development, and survival rate of primary OMM. RESULTS: Two patients were referred for the development of a lesion of the hard palate and the

Peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour of the maxillary gingiva.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic tumors are lesions that are derived from remnants of the components of the developing tooth germ. The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor or calcifying odontogenic cyst is a benign cystic neoplasm of odontogenic origin that is characterized by an ameloblastoma-like epithelium and ghost cells. Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor may be centrally or peripherally located, and its ghost cells may exhibit calcification, as first described by Gorlin in 1962. Most peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors are located in the anterior gingiva of the mandible or maxilla. C

Epulides in the dog: a review.

This article is based on a review of the literature and the study of pathology sections obtained from various veterinary pathology laboratories. Epulis is a non-specific, clinical designation for a localized, exophytic growth on the gingiva. Four reactive epulides occur in human beings, namely focal fibrous hyperplasia (fibrous epulis), pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma (giant cell epulis), and peripheral ossifying fibroma (calcifying fibrous epulis). The first three also occur in dogs but only focal fibrous hyperplasia appears to be common. The peripheral ossifying fibroma h

Moving beyond clinical appearance: the need for accurate histological diagnosis.

This study considered 120 cases of localized gingival overgrowths that had been clinically diagnosed, surgically excised, and submitted for histopathological examination from 2000 to 2006. Data regarding the patient's age and gender and the lesion's anatomical location, clinical diagnosis, and recurrence were retrieved from case records. The percentage of concurrence and discrepancy between clinical and histopathological diagnosis was calculated using a discrepancy index. In 46.60% of cases, the diagnoses were in total agreement; discrepancies were noted in 53.40% of cases. The diagnosis of pe

Minimal intervention approach for a lesion suggestive of congenital granular cell epulis: a case report.

Congenital granular cell epulis (CGCE), also known as newborn epulis and Neumann tumor, is a rare benign tumor characterized by neoplastic connective tissue proliferation. It typically occurs as a single mass in the maxillary anterior region of the alveolar ridge and seems to have a predilection for females. This case report describes a minimal intervention approach to CGCE that focused on the biopsychosocial well-being of the infant and family. Clinical examination of a 3-month-old male infant with gingival swelling that had been present since birth revealed a reddish, multilobulated, sessile

[A newborn with an abnormality on the upper jaw - congenital epulis].

At the full-term birth of a healthy girl, a swelling was observed in her mouth. Clinical examination revealed a firm, elastic swelling, pedunculated to the superior alveolar process. The swelling, larger than 2 centimeters, hindered mouth closure and prevented normal feeding. It did not interfere with breathing. An MRI scan ruled out vascular malformations, after which the pedicle was surgically removed under general anaesthesia. Histopathological examination showed a subepithelial mass consisting of cells with abundant granular cytoplasm, consistent with the diagnosis of congenital epulis. Co

Intraoral healing type of pyogenic granuloma (A benign vascular tumor): A case report.

Pyogenic granulomas represent tumor-like lesions affecting the skin and the oral cavity. This classic definition can be somewhat misleading because such lesion is not associated with infection and lacks any clinical evidence of pus or histological evidence of actual granulation tissue. This case report describes a surgical excision of the growth to exclude angiomatous proliferation. The patient reported a chief complaint of localized gingival overgrowth since 4 months. Intraoral examination revealed an irregular, sessile exuberant growth in respect to labial aspect and interdental gingiva of 3

Oral leiomyoma in retromolar trigone. A case report.

Leiomyomas are bening tumours originated on smooth muscle. The most frequent site of appearance are uterine myometrium, gastrointestinal tract and skin. The highest incidence occurs between 40 and 49 years of age. Its presentation is unusual in children or in older patients. Leiomyomas are unfrequent in the oral cavity, but in this location are usually localized on tongue, lips and palate. Leiomyomas use to appear as well-defined masses, with slow growth and totally asymptomatic. Pain is present just in rare cases. The treatment is surgical escision. Recurrences are extremely unfrequent. The d

Gingival localization of fibrosarcoma of soft oral tissues: case report.

A gingival localization of fibrosarcoma of soft oral tissues was described in a 58-year-old female. Primary fibrosarcoma of the head and neck region is rare. The histological appearance of the tumour is related to its grade of differentiation. The amount of collagen is variable. The accepted treatment is radical surgery; but metastases occur frequently in the lungs.

Malignant hemangiopericytoma of the gingiva: report of a case.

A case of malignant hemangiopericytoma arising in the left maxillary gingiva in a 2-year-old boy is presented. This represents an extremely rare intraoral lesion that is impossible to diagnose clinically. Histologic diagnosis was made by use of special staining techniques, immunohistochemical stains, and electron microscopic evaluation. This tumor shows a high incidence of local recurrence with a poor prognosis. The mainstay of treatment is wide local excision and adequate postoperative follow-up.
