Subtotal glossectomy preserving half the tongue base prevents taste disorder in patients with tongue cancer.

Most patients diagnosed with tongue carcinoma undergo surgical resection and reconstructive surgery to preserve tongue mobility and swallowing functions. Twenty-four patients who underwent a total or subtotal glossectomy and surgical reconstruction were evaluated for residual taste sensation. The graded filter paper test for all four tastes (sweet, salt, sour, and bitter) was performed on the posterior wall of the oropharynx and on tongue remnants if they were visible from the mouth. Eleven of the 24 patients were aware of their taste disorder after surgery. Four patients with more than 1/2 re

The Efficacy of the Partial Glossectomy for Prevention of Airway Volume Reduction in Orthognathic Surgery of Class III Patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a partial glossectomy on volumetric changes of pharyngeal airway space (PAS) in patients with mandibular setback surgery. Overall, 25 patients showing clinical features related to macroglossia treated with mandibular setback surgery were included in this retrospective study. Subjects were divided into two groups: the control group (G1, n = 13, with BSSRO) and the study group (G2, n = 12, with both BSSRO and partial glossectomy). The PAS volume of both groups was measured by the OnDemand 3D program on CBCT taken shortly before operation (T0),

Partial glossectomy and floor of mouth (FOM) defect repair with biological dural graft: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Oral carcinoma can cause significant defects that would necessitate a challenging reconstructive surgery. These techniques include biological or synthetic dressings, grafts, regional flaps, and free-vascularized flaps. Among these, the dural graft has demonstrated promising results in repairing the skull-base defects. Our aim is to report a new, innovative technique for partial glossectomy and floor of mouth defect repair using a biological dural graft dressing when primary repair was not feasible and the patient did not consent to dermal graft or flap interventions. Analysis of the relations between the shape of the reconstructed tongue and postoperative functions after subtotal or total glossectomy.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: For reconstruction after subtotal or total glossectomy, both preserving the larynx and maintaining postoperative swallowing and speech functions can greatly improve quality of life; however, postoperative functional results are often unstable. Our experiences suggest that insufficient flap volume in the oral area and postoperative prolapse of the preserved larynx affect postoperative function. The objective was to investigate the relations of the shape of the reconstructed tongue to postoperative swallowing and speech functions. STUDY DESIGN: The shape of the reconstruc

Prognostic factors associated with achieving total oral diet after glossectomy with microvascular free tissue transfer reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Primary surgery followed by adjuvant therapy is the current standard of care in the multidisciplinary management of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral tongue. Additionally, salvage glossectomy is used to treat recurrent base of tongue SCC. Microvascular free tissue transfer reconstruction (MVFTT) is utilized to maximize functional outcomes such as swallowing. We sought to identify prognostic factors related to achievement of a total oral diet in patients that underwent glossectomy with MVFTT. METHODS: Retrospective review at a tertiary care center from 2010 to 2015. RESULTS

Prosthetic Rehabilitation with Implant-Supported Mandibular Overdenture after Partial Glossectomy and Radiation Therapy: A Case Report.

Implant-supported overdenture is a well-established treatment option for many patients who have functional problems with conventional dentures. It may be primary choice for patients with altered jaw anatomy, neuromuscular disorders, pronounced gag reflex, severe residual ridge resorption and oral tissue defects. In this article we describe a case report, where tongue cancer patients occlusion was rehabilitated with an implantretained overdenture. In 2001 patient was operated for squamous cell carcinoma on the left side of the tongue. Before preoperative radiation therapy, small residual mandib

Rethinking Risk in Glossectomy: Obesity and Overweight Status Linked to Fewer Complications and Shorter Hospital Stays.

BACKGROUND: The obesity paradox suggests higher body mass index (BMI) may improve surgical outcomes despite being a traditional risk factor. This phenomenon has not been evaluated in glossectomy. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 6816 patients undergoing partial or total glossectomy (ACS-NSQIP, 2006-2022) was performed. Patients were stratified by BMI. Outcomes included operative time, length of stay (LOS), 30-day readmission, and complications. Univariate and multivariable analyzes were conducted. RESULTS: Obese patients (30.8%) had the shortest LOS (1 day) and lowest complication ra

Total Glossectomy Without Laryngectomy for Advanced Squamous Cell Cancer of the Tongue: Functional and Oncological Results.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Total glossectomy without laryngectomy for large tongue carcinomas still remains controversial, as these defects may go along with dramatic effects on respiration, speech and swallowing. As a consequence, these procedures significantly impact quality of life. Therefore, larger case series are rare. Nevertheless, with the development of free tissue transfer, functional reconstruction has become increasingly popular and encouraging results are reported in the literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present our experience with complete glossectomy without laryngectomy and free flap

Correlation of neotongue volume changes with functional outcomes after long-term follow-up of total glossectomy.

As the survival rate of tongue cancer has increased, longer-term results of tongue reconstruction are also being considered. The aim of this study was to report the long-term outcomes of total glossectomy.Of 14 patients who underwent total glossectomy, 11 were reconstructed with the rectus abdominis musculocutaneous free flap and 3 with the anterolateral thigh free flap. We reviewed survival rate, swallowing capacity, speech intelligibility, and volume reduction in flaps. Swallowing capacity and speech intelligibility were evaluated by visual analog scale scores (7 points) at 1 to 7 years afte

A precise glossectomy for tongue cancer adjacent to or crossing the midline: a novel anatomical unit resection surgery.

Previous studies have lacked a clear anatomical and functional definition of glossectomy for tongue cancer adjacent to or crossing the midline (TCML). The aim of this study was to provide a novel surgical approach based on anatomical unit resection surgery to treat TCML. A total of 120 patients with TCML who had undergone radical surgery were recruited retrospectively into the study. The patients who were treated with compartment surgery formed the control group; those treated with anatomical unit resection surgery formed the experimental group. The TCML was classified into cancer adjacent to

Clinical Factors for Marked Granuloma-like Neoplasm at the Wound Site after Partial Glossectomy - A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Marked granuloma-like neoplasm (GLN) formation after partial glossectomy interferes with wound healing and complicates postoperative management. Although polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheets are frequently used in oral surgery, few studies have comprehensively evaluated GLN incidence with and without PGA application, particularly in tongue lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study analysed 110 patients (112 surgical sites) with tongue cancer or precancerous lesions who underwent partial glossectomy. GLN was defined as an abnormally protruding mass identified during post

Seven cases of total laryngo-glossectomy combined with mandibulectomy: A retrospective case series from a single institution.

OBJECTIVE: In cases of tongue, gingival, or base of tongue cancer with mandibular tumor invasion, total laryngo-glossectomy and mandibulectomy may be necessary. However, since such cases are limited in number, very few cases have been reported. This study aimed to investigate the treatment strategy involving total laryngo-glossectomy combined with mandibulectomy. METHODS: This study included patients with head and neck cancer who underwent radical surgery involving total laryngo-glossectomy combined with partial mandibulectomy between January 2014 and December 2023. We investigated the sex, a
