Isolation of prion with BSE properties from farmed goat.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are fatal neurodegenerative diseases that include variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, scrapie in small ruminants, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle. Scrapie is not considered a public health risk, but BSE has been linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Small ruminants are susceptible to BSE, and in 2005 BSE was identified in a farmed goat in France. We confirm another BSE case in a goat in which scrapie was originally diagnosed and retrospectively identified as suspected BSE. The prion strain in this case was further c

Characteristics of the milk microbiota of healthy goats and goats diagnosed with clinical mastitis in Western China.

Guanzhong dairy goats, a breed indigenous to the Guanzhong region of China, offer several advantages; however, they are particularly vulnerable to mastitis, a common disease affecting their health and productivity. In this study, we collected milk samples from healthy goats (designated as healthy goat milk samples, n = 13) and goats affected by clinical mastitis (designated as mastitis goat milk samples, n = 24) from two distinct dairy goat farms located in Shaanxi and Gansu (Shaanxi n = 25, Gansu n = 12). We employed 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to identify the dominant bacterial communities

Prevalence of Theileria luwenshuni in goats (Capra hircus) on Tarama Island, Okinawa, Japan.

Caprine theileriosis is an economically important tick-borne disease caused by various Theileria species, particularly Theileria lestoquardi, Theileria luwenshuni, and Theileria uilenbergi, in goats (Capra hircus). Goat farming plays an economically and culturally important role on Tarama Island, Okinawa, Japan. Because goats on the island are mainly managed under an extensive grazing system, tick infestation is common. However, Theileria infections have not previously been investigated in goats on Tarama Island. To address this, archived DNA samples prepared from blood collected from 44 goats

The role of small ruminants in the epidemiology of leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a common global zoonotic disease of man and all farm animals. Although most leptospiral infections in sheep and goats are asymptomatic, they may play a role in the epidemiology of the disease by the spread of Leptospira through the urine. This study was carried out to evaluate the role of sheep and goats in the epidemiology of leptospirosis. Blood and urine samples were taken from 210 goats and 246 sheep. To detect antibodies, sera samples were tested with 8 live serovars of L. interrogans (Hardjo, Pomona, Grippotyphosa, Canicola, Ballum, Icterhemorrhagiae, Tarasovi, and Austr

The herd-level prevalence of caprine arthritis-encephalitis and genetic characteristics of small ruminant lentivirus in the Lithuanian goat population.

Caprine arthritis-encephalitis (CAE) is a progressive disease of goats caused by small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) and is considered as one of the most important threats for goat farming in developed countries. The disease prevalence has never been investigated in the Lithuanian goat population. Therefore, a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 2021-2022 to determine if SRLV infection was present in the Lithuanian goat population and, in the case of a positive result, to estimate the true herd-level prevalence of SRLV infection and specify genotypes and subtypes of SRLV responsi

The spread of pathogens through trade in small ruminants and their products.

While the international trade in small ruminants and small ruminant products is small relative to the trade in bovine, swine and poultry products, it is still economically important. In addition to wool, it includes some unique products (such as goat and sheep milk cheeses, cashmere fibre and karakul pelts) and the sheep/goat meat trade plays a large part in sustaining livelihoods in several regions of the world. The trade in small ruminants and their products also merits consideration because sheep and goats may transmit zoonotic diseases such as Rift Valley fever, Crimean Congo haemorrhagic

Clinicopathological and Sero-Molecular Detection of Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae in Goats in Southern Areas of Pakistan.

Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) is a highly fatal infectious disease of goats, caused by Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp). This disease is causing huge economic losses to the goat industry in Pakistan. However, little is known about the epidemiology of CCPP, especially in the hard areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan, despite having a huge population of goats. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate sero-molecular epidemiology and pathology associated with Mccp infection in goats in southern areas of KP including Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan), Bannu, Karak, and

Differentially Expressed MiRNAs of Goat Submandibular Glands Among Three Developmental Stages Are Involved in Immune Functions.

Submandibular glands (SMGs) are one of the primary components of salivary glands in goats. The proteins and biologically active substances secreted by the SMGs change with growth and development. Our previous studies showed that most of the differentially expressed genes in the SMGs of goats at different developmental stages are involved in immune-related signaling pathways, but the miRNA expression patterns in the same tissues are unknown. The aim of this study was to reveal the expression profile of miRNAs at three different developmental stages, detect differentially expressed miRNAs (DE mi

Prevalence and species distribution of caprine trypanosomosis in Sinazongwe and Kalomo districts of Zambia.

African animal trypanosomosis is one of the key livestock diseases hindering full exploitation of livestock production potential covering 37 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. Many studies have been carried out to investigate the prevalence of the disease in cattle and humans in many tropical African countries but very little attention has been directed towards generating the disease prevalence rates in goats. The current study was conducted between December 2013 and January 2014 to establish the prevalence of caprine trypanosomosis in Sinazongwe and Kalomo districts, southern Zambia. It inv

Conidiobolomycosis, cryptococcosis, and aspergillosis in sheep and goats: a review.

We review herein infections by Conidiobolus spp., Cryptococcus spp., and Aspergillus spp. in sheep and goats. Conidiobolus spp. are common causes of rhinitis in sheep and are less frequent in goats, in which Conidiobolus spp. also cause skin lesions. Cryptococcus spp. cause rhinitis, meningitis, encephalitis, and pneumonia in goats, and are rarely observed in sheep. Aspergillus spp. may cause rhinitis in goats, and pneumonia and mastitis in sheep and goats. Gross and microscopic lesions caused by these 3 fungal infections may be similar to each other. The diagnosis of these diseases must be ba

Characterization of novel macrophage cell lines derived from goat and sheep blood and their susceptibility to ruminant virus infections.

Macrophages are present in all vertebrate tissues and play a key role in both the prevention and pathogenesis of infectious diseases. In vitro cultures of macrophages provide a valuable tool for studying the innate immune functions of macrophages and macrophage-pathogen interactions in specific animal species. We previously demonstrated that porcine macrophages were effectively immortalized by transferring the simian virus 40 large T antigen (SV40LT) gene and porcine telomerase reverse transcriptase (pTERT) gene using lentiviral vectors. In the present study, we investigated whether this immor

First results on small ruminant brucellosis and tuberculosis and caprine arthritis-encephalitis in El Salvador.

This paper reports a first-time study performed in El Salvador on the presence or absence of antibodies to three important animal diseases in small ruminants. The work was conducted in the west and central departments of the country, selecting 42 and 43 cantons with an existing sheep and goat population, respectively. Serum samples were collected from 396 sheep and 335 goats and tested for seropositivity to Brucella (B.) spp. The specimens from goats were also tested for antibodies to caprine arthritis-encephalitis (CAE) virus. Four (1 %) sheep and none of the goats were seropositive by Rose B

Susceptibility of Nigerian west African dwarf and red Sokoto goats to a strain of Trypanosoma congolense.

West African Dwarf (WAD) and Red Sokoto (RS) goats were experimentally infected with the Kafanchan strain of Trypanosoma congolense and the course of the infection was monitored. The organism was pathogenic and produced fatal disease in the goats, which was characterized by rapid progressive anaemia, leucocytosis, weight loss and death. All RS goats died within 11 days of infection, and had a mean reduction in packed cell volume (PCV) of 11%. In West African Dwarf goats, one death occurred on Day 13 post-infection with a mean drop in PCV of 9%. Statistically significant (P < 0.05) mean reducti

Seroprevalence of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in sheep and goats from mountainous areas of Slovakia.

In the present study, domestic animals such as sheep and goats from eastern Slovakia were screened for the presence of anti-Borrelia antibodies. Seroprevalence in 181 sheep and 65 goats were carried out in 1999 and 2000. Modified ELISA method was used for detection of anti-Borrelia IgG antibodies. Seroprevalence obtained was 15.8% and 17.5% in 1999 and 2000 respectively in sheep, whereas in goats it was 17.2% and 19.4% respectively. The results suggest that these domestic species have potential to transmit the disease to other animals. Though the role of sheep and goats in Lyme disease has not

Role of goats in epizootiology and epidemiology of Q fever.

Numerous data show that the epizootics of Q fever in goats can be particularly related to cases of this disease in humans. The aim of the study was to examine 98 goat serum samples from the farm where abortions, early parturition and parturition of weak goatlings were noted. The microaglutination method was used in this study. Serum dilution 1:8 was defined as a positive titre. The study revealed that 79.6% of serum samples were positive and numerous high titres suggested an acute form of infection. It could be supposed that Q fever was the reason of abortions in the herd. The results obtained

Experimental infection of sheep and goats with a recent isolate of peste des petits ruminants virus from Kurdistan.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a contagious viral disease of sheep and goats common in Africa and Asia. Its high morbidity and mortality has a devastating impact on agriculture in developing countries. As an example, an Asian lineage IV strain of PPRV was responsible for mass fatalities among wild goats in Kurdistan in 2010/2011. In separate experiments, three sheep and three goats of German domestic breeds were subcutaneously inoculated with the Kurdish virus isolate; three uninfected sheep and goats were housed together with the inoculated animals. All inoculated animals, all in-contact
