Survival and prognostic differences between appendiceal NETs and goblet cell adenocarcinomas.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with appendiceal neuroendocrine tumours (aNETs) have an excellent prognosis. Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinomas (aGCAs), formerly called goblet carcinoid, show overlapping features with aNETs. Many discrepancies exist between studies regarding prognostication of patients with aNETs. In this study, we aim to identify differences in disease course between aNETs and aGCAs to explain inconsistencies in the literature and identify variables influencing recurrence and survival. METHODS: Patients with aNET or aGCA diagnosed between 2000 and 2019 were included. Kaplan-Meier c

Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinoma with perineural invasion extending into the ileocecal lesion.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinoma (GCA) is a rare subtype of primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma with an incidence of 1-5 per 10,000,000 people per year. Appendiceal tumors are often diagnosed after appendectomy for acute appendicitis. Notably, however, there is currently no standard treatment strategy for GCA, including additional resection. We report a case of appendiceal GCA with perineural extension into the cecum, in which ileal resection was considered effective. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old man was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent appendectomy. Histop

Appendiceal Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma: A Historically Informed Reading of 6 Cases.

CONTEXT.—: Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinoma is an uncommon appendiceal neoplasm that is typically diagnosed incidentally to a presentation of acute appendicitis. Over the years, there have been many changes to the histologic evaluation and classification of this neoplasm, culminating in the most recent (2019) World Health Organization recommendations. OBJECTIVE.—: To understand the evolution of the concept of "goblet cell" neoplasia in the appendix, we explore a series of cases of goblet cell adenocarcinoma encountered at a county hospital over a 20-year period. We performed a historica

Impact of P2X7 Purinoceptors on Goblet Cell Function: Implications for Dry Eye.

By providing ~70% of the eye's refractive power, the preocular tear film is essential for optimal vision. However, its integrity is often jeopardized by environmental and pathologic conditions that accelerate evaporation and cause sight-impairing dry eye. A key adaptive response to evaporation-induced tear film hyperosmolarity is the reflex-triggered release of tear-stabilizing mucin from conjunctival goblet cells. Here, we review progress in elucidating the roles of ion channels in mediating this important exocytotic response. Much is now known about the modulatory impact of ATP-sensitive pot

An extremely rare finding of goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix. A case report.

Goblet cell carcinoid or carcinoma (GCC) refers to an extremely rare appendiceal tumor usually diagnosed on post-operative histology as an incidental finding. Primary cancers of the vermiform appendix are quite rare, representing less than 1% of all gastrointestinal malignancies. GCCs are considered as a distinct entity of appendiceal tumors, consisting of both epithelial (glandular) and neuroendocrine elements containing goblet cells. This entity tends to be more aggressive than typical carcinoid tumors as it often presents with metastatic disease. Therefore, an early recognition and an appro

Changes with age in density of goblet cells in the small intestine of broiler chicks.

Goblet cells secrete mucin 2 (Muc2), which is a major component of the mucus that lines the intestinal tract and creates a protective barrier between pathogens and the intestinal epithelial cells and thus are important for chick health. The objectives of this study were to determine the age-specific and intestinal segment-specific expression of Muc2 mRNA and changes in the number of goblet cells from late embryogenesis to early after hatch. Small intestinal samples from the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum were collected from Cobb 500 broilers at embryonic day 19 (e19), day of hatch (doh), and day

Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix: Two case reports and a review of the literature.

Goblet cell carcinoid or carcinoma (GCC) is a rare tumor found incidentally during routine management of acute appendicitis. GCCs are more aggressive compared with conventional appendiceal tumors but less aggressive compared with adenocarcinomas, and they often present with serosal and mesoappendiceal involvement. We herein report two cases of acute appendicitis in a 45-year-old female and a 60-year-old male with varied clinical symptoms. Pathological examination of the appendix revealed the presence of adenocarcinoma with goblet cells and a Ki-67 index of 25% (grade 3) and 15% (grade 2), resp

Perforation of appendiceal adenocarcinoma ex goblet cell carcinoid: a rare case.

Goblet cell carcinoid tumor is a rare form of carcinoid tumor of the appendix. It behaves more aggressively than classical carcinoid tumor of the appendix. Thus, special attention must be given to its disease course and treatment. Our case presentation is of a 68-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain. Computed tomography of her abdomen and pelvis showed a perforated appendicitis. She underwent an ileocectomy with pathological report showing a goblet cell carcinoid tumor of the appendix with negative lymph nodes. A subsequent colonoscopy done 5 months later showed no synchronous les

Comparison of goblet cell staining methods in jejunal mucosa of turkey poults.

This study compared the intestinal goblet cell density of turkey poults at 2 different ages using Alcian blue-periodic acid-Shiff (AB-PAS) and mucicarmine stains. Neutral mucins are stained with periodic acid-Shiff whereas acidic mucins are stained with Alcian blue. Mucicarmine and AB-PAS are specific to the mucins of epithelial origin. Mucicarmine has only been used for the assessment of goblet cells in human specimens, and it may have advantages for use in animals as a result of the methodological simplicity of staining as compared to AB-PAS. A mid-section of jejunum was taken from 80 turkey

[A Case of Goblet Cell Carcinoid of the Appendix Invading Directly into the Sigmoid Colon].

A 73-year-old man underwent a screening colonoscopy, and a depressed lesion in the sigmoid colon was detected. Biopsy revealed a Group V lesion, and he was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer. During surgery, there was dense adhesion of the appendix to the sigmoid colon, and sigmoidectomy combined with appendectomy was performed. However, pathological examination revealed goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix with direct invasion into the sigmoid colon. To the best of our knowledge, no similar cases have been reported in Japan. Additional surgery with lymph node dissection was recommended, but

Goblet cell density and distribution in cats with clinically and histologically normal conjunctiva.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate goblet cell density (GCD) and distribution in cats without clinical evidence of ocular surface disease and without histologic evidence of conjunctival disease. ANIMALS STUDIED: Fourteen Domestic Shorthair cats euthanized for reasons unrelated to this study. PROCEDURES: Before euthanasia, cats were verified using slit-lamp biomicroscopy and fluorescein staining to be free of eyelid or ocular surface abnormalities. Immediately after euthanasia, bilateral conjunctival specimens including third eyelid (TEL) were collected, routinely processed, and

Goblet cell appendiceal tumors--management dilemmas and long-term outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal Goblet cell tumors (GCTs) are clinically more aggressive, and have a worse outcome than midgut neuroendocrine tumors (mNETs). Guidelines for management of GCTs are limited. METHODS: A retrospective case-study analysis was performed in patients with a diagnosis of GCT, confirmed on histological review. Patients were evaluated clinically, biochemically, and radiologically. RESULTS: 48 patients were identified (TNM stage I-II: 27, stage III: 15, stage IV: 6). Median follow-up was 44 months and was complete in all patients. 68.8% presented with acute appendicitis. 44/48 p

A systematic assessment of goblet cell sampling of the bulbar conjunctiva by impression cytology.

The purpose of this study was to assess the apparent goblet cell density (GCD) from conjunctival impression cytology (CIC) samples in relation to the number of conjunctival cells collected onto the filters. CIC specimens were collected from the superior-temporal bulbar conjunctiva of 16 pigmented rabbits onto Biopore (Millicell-CM) membranes, fixed with buffered glutaraldehyde and stained with Giemsa. Different numbers of microscope fields of view in each of the specimens were imaged by light microscopy using a 20× magnification objective lens (200× final magnification), and the goblet cells m

Signaling pathways used by EGF to stimulate conjunctival goblet cell secretion.

The purpose of this study was to identify the signaling pathways that epidermal growth factor (EGF) uses to stimulate mucin secretion from cultured rat conjunctival goblet cells and to compare the pathways used by EGF with those used by the known secretagogue muscarinic, cholinergic agonists. To this end, goblet cells from rat conjunctiva were grown in culture using RPMI media. For immunofluorescence experiments, antibodies against EGF receptor (EGFR) and ERK 2 as well as muscarinic receptors (M(1)AchR, M(2)AchR, and M(3)AchR) were used, and the cells viewed by fluorescence microscopy. Goblet cell carcinoid of the rectum with lymph node metastasis: report of a case.

We report an unusual case of goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the rectum. A 75-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with anal bleeding, and a hard tumor was felt on the anterior wall of the lower rectum during rectal examination. We performed colonoscopy, and found a 30-mm type 2 tumor in the lower rectum and anal canal. Histological examination of biopsies revealed rectal adenocarcinoma. Based on these findings, we diagnosed rectal adenocarcinoma and performed Miles' operation with lymph node dissection. Histological examination revealed an invasive lesion composed of signet-ring-like cell

Exfoliating goblet cell hyperplasia mimicking pterygium: a clinicopathological case report.

We present an interventional case report of exfoliating goblet cell hyperplasia mimicking pterygium. A 44-year-old male with bilateral lesions of the nasal bulbar conjunctiva extending over the cornea, consistent with pterygia, underwent surgical excision of the lesion in his left eye. Histopathologic examination revealed an exophytic lesion made up of proliferated goblet cells with benign cytologic features. Some of the goblet cells were atrophic and seemed to be desquamating from the lesion surface. Cytologic examination of a tear specimen collected from the right eye revealed the presence o
