Iron deficiency in goitrous schoolchildren of Semirom, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Iodine deficiency produces the spectrum of iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs): endemic goiter, hypothyroidism, cretinism, and congenital anomalies. Other factors, including goitrogens and micronutrient deficiencies, may influence the prevalence and severity of IDDs and response to iodine supplementation. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was performed in 2003 on elementary school children of Semirom, a mountainous region of Iran, where goiter was hyper-endemic in 1994, but the goiter prevalence had not decreased as expected many years after salt iodization and iodine injectio

Clinical, biochemical & cytomorphologic study on Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Despite, the extensive salt iodization programmes implemented in India, the prevalence of goiter has not reduced much in our country. The most frequent cause of hypothyroidism and goiter in iodine sufficient areas is Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). This study records the clinical presentation, biochemical status, ultrasonographic picture and cytological appearance of this disease in a coastal endemic zone for goiter. METHODS: Case records of patients with cytological diagnosis of HT were studied in detail, with reference to their symptoms, presence of goiter, thyroid fu

Iodide-induced thyrotoxicosis.

Iodide-induced thyrotoxicosis (IIT) occurs in patients with: 1) endemic goiter; 2) nonendemic goiter; 3) no previous thyroid disease. Iodine prophylaxis for endemic goiter caused transient increase of 0.01-0.04% over the basal incidence of hyperthyroidism peaking at 1-3 years and normalizing in 3-10 years despite continued iodide exposure. Elderly subjects with large nodular goiters of long standing are at greater risk. In nonendemic areas, iodine-containing drugs such as amiodarone, radiographic contrast media or iodochlorhydroxyquinoline are implicated in IIT more often than iodides. With no

Neonatal hypothyroidism in India.

Nutritional iodine deficiency and endemic goiter are widely prevalent in developing countries, affecting an estimated 1 billion people. Recent studies in India, using radioimmunoassay methods, have shown that the incidence of neonatal hypothyroidism in endemic goiter regions is more than a hundredfold higher than the incidence in nonendemic regions. This knowledge has given a new momentum to the iodine prophylactic program in the country, resulting in the protection of hundreds of thousands of newborns from mental retardation.

[Different etiology of thyrotoxicosis as a function of previous prevalence of goiter].

BACKGROUND: The high incidence of goiter is believed to modify the characteristics and etiology of thyrotoxicosis. The aim of the present was to study the etiologic types and clinical characteristics of thyrotoxicosis of patients from two areas of different endemic goiter. METHODS: Two hundred twelve patients (184 women and 28 males) were studied with clinical and analytical data of thyrotoxicosis. The patients were consecutively seen in the endocrinology units of two different hospitals over the last 4 years. One hundred eight patients pertained to the area of the Xeral Hospital in Lugo (inl

Pattern of intrathoracic goiter in Ibadan, Nigeria.

This study is to review the pattern of intrathoracic goiter in a large black population. In a retrospective review, the cardiothoracic unit managed ninety-eight primary mediastinal masses of which sixteen patients with intrathoracic goiters were treated during the same period. This constitutes 1.3% of treated goiters and 16.3% of primary mediastinal masses. Seventy-five per cent of the intrathoracic goiters were in association with cervical goiters. Twelve of the intrathoratic goiters were located in the anterosuperior mediastinum, and two in the middle mediastinum. There were three goiters in

Goiter prevalence, serum selenium, and urine iodine status in a previously iodine-deficient area in Turkey.

This study was planned to investigate goiter prevalence and serum selenium and urine iodine status among school-age children in the Ankara region of Turkey. Nine hundred five (905) children were investigated; 847 of them were included in the study. Thyroid ultrasound was performed on children who were suspected of being goitrous at physical examination. Serum TSH, thyroxine, triiodotyronine, thyroid antibody, and urine iodine concentrations (UIC) are also measured. Ultrasound measurements revealed a goiter in 107 (12.6%) of the 847 children. Goiter prevalence was significantly lower among iodi

[The bacteriological revolution and theories of the etiology of goiter and cretinism].

During the 19th century, a large number of researchers produced many different and even contradictory theories about the aetiology of endemic goiter and cretinism. The bacteriological revolution, i.e. the acceptance of the germ theory of infectious diseases, pushed scientists to try to isolate a germ for every disease. In the case of goiter and cretinism, this was fruitless endeavour. Nevertheless, the impact of the bacteriological revolution was largely positive because it provided a new scientific model of the genesis of disease and strengthened confidence in the possibility of fighting ende

The degree of the thyroid dysfunction was determined in 100 women, suffering from endemic goiter, on the basis of the clinical pattern metabolic findings, the degree of 131I absorption by the thyroid and 131I-labelled thyroxine -- F-factor. The glucose tolerance test (GTT) was performed. In patients with euthyrosis and thyrotoxicosis the insular apparatus response to hyperglycemia was not sufficient. In 31% of the patients GTT was decreased. Latent diabetes mellitus was seen in 17% of the subjects and an evident from the disease in 10%. The thyroid dysfunction in the region of endemic goiter m

History of the Thyroid.

The history of the thyroid dates from 2697 BCE when the "Yellow Emperor" Hung Ti described the use of seaweed to treat goiter. The English name "thyroid" was coined by Thomas Wharton in 1656 from the Greek word for a shield. Bernard Courtois discovered iodine in 1811 when he noted a residual purplish ash while burning seaweed. Robert Graves is known for his classic 1835 report of "palpitations, goiter, and exophthalmos" in three women, but Caleb Parry observed the same clinical features in 1786. The clinical syndrome we now recognize as hypothyroidism was characterized as "myxoedema" in 1878 b

In the article there are presented the results of research on naturally conditioned insufficiency of trace elements, particularly iodine, in the Republic of Mordovia. Iodine deficiency disorders are referred to the most common non-infectious human pathology. According to WHO data, about two billion people on Earth live in conditions of in iodine deficiency. In the Russian Federation there are no areas in which the population would not be at risk for the development of iodine deficiency disorders. To these regions and the Republic of Mordovia is referred. The prevalence of diseases caused by io

[Should the iodination of table salt be increased in Austria?].

Since the main reason of endemic goiter is the avoidable iodine deficiency, this in an unnecessary disease. In Austria an exemplary iodized salt prophylaxis was introduced in 1963. Thanks to this iodized salt prophylaxis endemic cretinism has died out. The incidence of hypothyroidism in newborns is currently 1 : 4600, goiter frequency in the first school year now only 1.1 to 1.5%. In contrast the goiter incidence in girls in the twelfth school year increases to 13.4% and up to one third of adults are afflicted by goiter. Studies of iodine excretion in Feldkirch, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Graz and V

Morpho-functional features in adolescent males under iodine deficiency of the Saratov region.

An auxological study of 538 adolescent males (from 12 to 17) from different settlements of the Saratov region with various degrees of industrialization and iodine deficiency was carried out. All subjects have undergone an ultra-sound screening of thyroid volume to reveal the frequency of endemic goiter in each group. The results obtained during investigation showed the existence of deviations in the physical development of boys with goiter in skinfold thickness, body circumferences (chest, shoulder, and forearm), biacromial and biiliocristal diameters, transversal and sagittal chest diameters,

Hyposialylated thyroglobulin in a patient with congenital goiter and hypothyroidism.

A large family (14 children) with congenital goiter whose parents are first cousins was studied. Thyroid tissue was obtained, after 125I in vivo labeling, from one of the siblings (JBM). Gel filtration of thyroid proteins indicated that thyroglobulin (Tg) eluted as a single symmetrical peak in the same position as authentic 19S Tg. Gel electrophoresis in a 7.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel revealed a major band with the same mobility and immunoreactivity as normal 19S Tg. Hydrolysis of the patient's Tg indicated that most of the radioactivity was mono- and diiodotyrosines. The yie
