Effect of mixed protein supplementation on golf performance and muscle function: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: As a relatively novel approach to enhancing skeletal muscle health, mixed protein supplementation has shown similar responses to whey protein. However, no previous studies have examined its impact on golf swing performance. This study aimed to examine the effect of mixed protein supplementation on the swing performance and muscle strength of casual golfers. METHODS: Sixty participants with a handicap of less than 20 were recruited and randomly assigned to a double-blind, placebo-controlled study design. The participants were divided into two groups: a mixed protein group (MG, n =

Estimates of Golf-Related Upper Extremity Injuries in the United States: A 10-Year Epidemiology Study (2011-2020).

BACKGROUND: Golf is one of the most popular sports in the United States (US) and is played by participants of all ages and skill level. Given the popularity and sport-specific demands on the upper torso, golf poses a considerable risk for upper extremity (UE) injuries. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to (1) determine the incidence rate of UE golf injuries presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in the US, (2) determine the most commonly injured body parts and mechanisms of injury, and (3) compare current injury epidemiology with previous trends in the literature. HYPOTHESIS: Mal

Exploring Attentional Mechanisms of Strategic Self-Talk Through Heart-Rate Variability in a Golf-Putting Task Among Novices.

The positive impact of strategic self-talk on performance in various sports tasks has been well-documented. Contemporary research has therefore started to explore the potential mechanisms through which self-talk affects performance. The primary purpose of the present study was to examine aspects of the attentional mechanisms underlying performance on a golf putting task, endorsing a psychophysiological perspective through the assessment of Heart-Rate Variability (HRV). Participants were 40 male sport science students, with no prior experience in golf putting, who were randomly assigned to cont

Golf Optimization Algorithm: A New Game-Based Metaheuristic Algorithm and Its Application to Energy Commitment Problem Considering Resilience.

In this research article, we uphold the principles of the No Free Lunch theorem and employ it as a driving force to introduce an innovative game-based metaheuristic technique named Golf Optimization Algorithm (GOA). The GOA is meticulously structured with two distinctive phases, namely, exploration and exploitation, drawing inspiration from the strategic dynamics and player conduct observed in the sport of golf. Through comprehensive assessments encompassing fifty-two objective functions and four real-world engineering applications, the efficacy of the GOA is rigorously examined. The results o

Lower Body Joint Moments during the Golf Swing in Older Adults: Comparison to Other Activities of Daily Living.

Golf participation has increased dramatically in the last several years. With this increase in participation, clinicians need better evidenced based strategies to advise those golfers with different pathologies when it is safe to return to the game. Golf teaching professionals also need to understand how to alter golf mechanics to protect injured and/or diseased joints in golfers to allow them to play pain free and avoid further injury. This study used a 3-dimensional link segment model to calculate the net joint moments on the large lower limb joints (knee and hip) during golf (lead and trail

Multiple episodes of golf-related isolated spinous process fractures (clay-shoveler's fracture) and its ten-year follow-up.

CASE: We present a case of a 28-year-old beginner golfer who sustained multiple episodes of isolated spinous process fractures of the lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae (clay-shoveler's fracture) and its ten-year follow-up. The patient is complaining of intermittent mild dull pain and discomfort in the posterior aspect of the cervicothoracic junction even after 10 years from initial injury. Radiologic evaluation revealed non-union of avulsed fragments and the patient's symptoms are possibly associated with non-union. Nevertheless, he recovered to full activity with no limitations in a

Meningeal osteochondroma simulating meningioma with metaplastic change: a rare golf-ball-like lesion of non-meningothelial mesenchymal origin.

Non-meningothelial mesenchymal tumors of the central nervous system (CNS), including those originating from the meninges, histologically correspond to tumors of soft tissue or bone. These individual entities arising from the meninges are rare, and probably have their origin in the multipotent primitive mesenchymal stem cells of the dura. Though it is a common bone tumor, the meningeal origin of osteochondroma has only very rarely been reported. We describe a case of a 35-year-old female with a well-demarcated, golf-ball-like osteochondroma of meningeal origin which was enucleated en bloc on cr

Acute Effects of Self-Selected Music Intervention on Golf Performance and Anxiety Level in Collegiate Golfers: A Crossover Study.

Music has been reported as a positive intervention for improving psychophysiological conditions and exercise performance. However, the effects of music intervention on golf performance in association with psychophysiological responses have not been well examined in the literature. The purpose of the study was to investigate the acute effects of self-selected music intervention on golf swing and putting performance, heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV), and anxiety. Twenty collegiate golfers voluntarily participated in this study (age = 20.2 ± 1.4 years, height = 171.7 ± 8.0 cm, body weight =

Evaluation of individual and combined management practices to reduce the off-site transport of pesticides from golf course turf.

The detection of pesticides, associated with turfgrass management, in storm runoff and surface waters of urban watersheds has raised concerns regarding their source, potential environmental effects and a need for strategies to reduce their inputs. In previous research we discovered that hollow tine core cultivation (HTCC) was more effective than other management practices for reducing the off-site transport of pesticides with runoff from creeping bentgrass turf managed as a golf course fairway. This was primarily the result of enhanced infiltration and reduced runoff volumes associated with tu

Injury risk-factor differences between two golf swing styles: a biomechanical analysis of the lumbar spine, hip and knee.

The golf swing has been associated with mechanical injury risk factors at many joints. One swing, the Minimalist Golf Swing, was hypothesised to reduce lumbar spine, lead hip, and lead knee ranges of motion and peak net joint moments, while affecting swing performance, compared to golfers' existing swings. Existing and MGS swings of 15 golfers with handicaps ranging from +2 to -20 were compared. During MGS downswing, golfers had 18.3% less lumbar spine transverse plane ROM, 40.7 and 41.8% less lead hip sagittal and frontal plane ROM, and 39.2% less lead knee sagittal plane ROM. MGS reduced lea

Graphite shafts reduce forearm muscle activity in golf - a prospective case series of 40 right-handed amateur and professional golfers.

BACKGROUND: Lateral and medial epicondylitis are common overuse injuries in golf affecting both amateur and professional players. Treatment options include medical but also non-medical interventions like optimizing golf equipment. While several studies have investigated the impact of grip size and style as well as the use of a golf glove on forearm muscle activity, the impact of shaft material remains unclear. Thus, aims of this study were (1) to assess the impact of different shaft material on the forearm muscle activity across the 5 phases of the golf swing, (2) to evaluate the effect on the

Effects of music intervention on golf-specific skill performance of golfers under mental fatigue: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Given that golf tournaments last approximately five hours without an intermission, mental fatigue has become a critical factor affecting performance. Although research has shown that music intervention can effectively alleviate mental fatigue, this method has yet to be applied in golf. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of music intervention on golf-specific skill performance under mental fatigue. This study adopts a randomized, controlled, partially-blind design, including three groups. The MF-Mu group undergoes a mental fatigue induction task followed by a music intervention.
