Influences of pH and current on electrolytic dechlorination of trichloroethylene at a granular-graphite packed electrode.

Electrolytic dechlorination using a granular-graphite packed cathode is an alternative method for the remediation of chlorinated organic compounds. Its effectiveness under various conditions needs experimental investigation. Dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) was conducted under various conditions in an electrolytic reactor with a platinum-gauze anode and a granular-graphite packed cathode. The higher the applied current, the more TCE was eliminated and more hydrogen and oxygen gasses were generated. Current efficiency decreased with a decrease in TCE concentration during each dechlorin

Graphitic Carbon Nitride-Based Microrobots: Progress and Prospects in Environmental and Biomedical Applications.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a metal-free semiconductor responsive to visible light that has attracted considerable interest as a photocatalyst in environmental and biomedical applications. Constructing photocatalysts as light-driven microrobots allows simultaneous propulsion and catalytic activity, both driven by photoinduced charge separation. In addition, light-driven systems can perform remote control of micro/nanorobots (MNRs) and reduce their reliance on external chemical fuels. Thus, g-C3N4 has been investigated as a functional material for microrobots, owing to its low cost, ch

Liquid Precursor-Enabled Growth of 2D Mo2C and Mo2C/Graphitic Carbon Heterostructures.

In this work, we present the low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of two-dimensional (2D) Mo2C using liquid n-hexane as a carbon precursor on a Cu/Mo bilayer under H2 at ∼1085 °C. By varying the reactor pressure from 0.75 to 1.00 mbar, corresponding to different carbon-flux conditions, we achieve controlled evolution in surface carbon availability during growth. Under comparatively lower flux conditions, well-defined faceted Mo2C domains with enhanced lateral growth are obtained. With increased flux, graphitic carbon signatures emerge together with denser but comparatively small

Adsorption and purification of biogas inside graphitic nanopores: molecular dynamics simulation approach.

Biogas is one of the most common sources of biomass energy. Due to the associated environmental pollution and costs, desulfurization, and purification are the most important challenges of biogas power generation. Using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD), we systematically simulated the isothermal adsorption behavior of biogas (comprising CH4, CO2, H2O, H2S, and H2) in graphite (Gr) slit nanopores. The impact of slit width, system temperature, and moisture content on the adsorption energy, adsorption ratio, and diffusion coefficient of biogas molecules was investigated. Simulation results reveale

Effect of Process Parameters on the Graphite Expansion Produced by a Green Modification of the Hummers Method.

Adsorption stand out among other standard techniques used for water treatment because of its remarkable simplicity, easy operation, and high removal capability. Expanded graphite has been selected as a promising agent for oil spill adsorption, but its production involves the generation of corrosive remnants and massive amounts of contaminated washing waters. Although the advantageous use of the H2O2-H2SO4 mixture was described in 1978, reported works using this method are scarce. This work deals with the urgent necessity for the development of alternative chemical routes decreasing their envir

Retention behaviour of unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters on porous graphitic carbon.

The eluotropic strength of binary mobile phases was calculated for three homologous series of cis, trans, and cis-cis unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). Binary mobile phases with chloroform, dichloromethane, or tetrahydrofuran as strong solvent and methanol or acetonitrile as weak solvent were tested. The volume fraction of strong solvent in the binary phases was between 0.3 and 0.8. Curves of eluotropic strength versus volume fraction of strong solvents showed similar trends to previously published results for saturated homologues. Correlation coefficients of the plots of eluotropi

Enhancement of sensitivity in atomic-absorption spectrometry by addition of a graphite lid to a cup furnace.

By using a cup furnace covered with a graphite lid, it is possible to enhance the atomic-absorption signal for Cd, Zn, Sb, Pb, In, Cu and Fe in solution and for Pb in tin metal (directly atomized). When the analyte is atomized in the cup furnace, part of it condenses on the lid, from which it can be re-evaporated and atomized to give a second absorption signal and hence greater sensitivity. When the lid is small, so that the temperature lag is short, the initial atomic-absorption intensity is also enhanced. The enhancement is due to an increased residence time of the atomized analyte in the cu

Nanoscale Band Gap Modulation and Dual Moiré Superlattices of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Weakly Coupled to Graphite.

Van der Waals (vdW) materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), are highly promising for applications in optoelectronics and quantum technologies. When assembled into heterostructures, h-BN can form moiré superlattices, enabling the engineering of electronic and optical properties by varying the interlayer twist angle. However, understanding the nanoscale interplay between moiré patterns and electronic properties such as the band gap or work function, particularly in optically active h-BN structures, remains a challenge. Here, we use the atomic-scale precision of scanning tunneling micr

Precise Fabrication of Graphite-Like Material Directly on a Biological Membrane Enabled by Ethanol Ice Resist.

Ice lithography holds the potential to bridge cryogenic electron microscopy and electron-beam lithography and achieve direct high-precision functionalization of fragile biomaterials. Here we demonstrate that 5 keV electron irradiation of ethanol ice creates a material, patterned with <100 nm resolution, that is stable in the solid phase under ambient conditions. Employing the purple membrane from Halobacterium salinarum as a test target, we additionally show that the fabrication process results in minimal biomaterial mass loss. Ketene, an unstable intermediate, was identified in the irradiated

Focusing Effects on Laser-Induced Plasma Parameters: Applications to a Graphite Target Under Martian Atmospheric Conditions.

Under various atmospheric conditions, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a powerful technique for elemental analysis, including in Earth- and Mars-like environments. However, understanding the plasma behavior and its dependence on ambient pressure and laser parameters remains a challenge. In this study, a numerical model based on a three-temperature Eulerian radiation framework under non-local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions is employed to investigate the interaction of a nanosecond laser pulse with a graphite target under helium (He) and carbon dioxide (CO2 atmospheres. Electrochemical detection of sulfanilamide using tannic acid exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets combined with reduced graphene oxide/graphite.

Sulfonamides are a family of synthetic drugs with a broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Like other antimicrobials, they have been found in aquatic environments, making their detection important. Herein, an electrochemical sensor was designed using tannic acid exfoliated few-layered MoS2 sheets, which were combined with a mixture of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphite flakes (G). The rGO/G was formed using electrodeposition, by cycling from -0.5 to -1.5 V in an acidified sulfate solution with well dispersed GO and G. The exfoliated MoS2 sheets were drop cast over the wrinkled rGO/G

Capture of dengue viruses using antibody-integrated graphite-encapsulated magnetic beads produced using gas plasma technology.

Despite significant advances in medicine, global health is threatened by emerging infectious diseases caused by a number of viruses. Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito‑borne virus, which can be transmitted to humans via mosquito vectors. Previously, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan reported the country's first domestically acquired case of dengue fever for almost 70 years. To address this issue, it is important to develop novel technologies for the sensitive detection of DENV. The present study reported on the development of plasma-functionalized, graphite-encapsulated magnet

A novel route to graphite-like carbon supporting SnO2 with high electron transfer and photocatalytic activity.

Mesoporous graphite-like carbon supporting SnO2 (carbon-SnO2) nanocomposites were prepared by a modified solvothermal method combined with a post-calcination at 500°C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The polyvinylpyrrolidone not only promotes the nucleation and crystallization, but also provides the carbon source in the process. The results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy show a uniform distribution of SnO2 nanoparticles on the graphite- like carbon surface. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate the presence of strong C-Sn interaction between SnO2 and

Tuning the interface of graphite felt-supported NiCo composites for superior electrocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants.

Pharmaceuticals are usually paid more attention because of their persistence and potential toxicity, and their degradation via different radicals is depended on their types and concentrations. In this work, an electrocatalytic system using graphite felt (GF)-supported NiCo-based catalysts as working electrodes was established for degradation of pharmaceuticals such as ibuprofen (IBU). 95.0 % and 99.8 % of IBU can be degraded under the action of NiCo-LDH@g-C3N4/GF and NiCoO2-GF systems, respectively. Correspondingly, the rate constants of two systems were 4.0 and 4.8 times higher than that of b
