Growth and development in children with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Final height outcome in classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) has been of interest for many years. With analysis of growth patterns and used glucocorticoid regimens, enhanced treatment strategies have been developed and are still under development. RECENT FINDINGS: Most of the current reports on final height outcome are confirmative of previous results. Final height data is still reported in cohorts that were diagnosed clinically and not by newborn screening. Clinical diagnosis of CAH leads to delayed diagnosis especially of simple virilizing CAH with significantly a

Human growth hormone and the development of osteochondritis dissecans lesions.

No single etiology regarding the cause of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions is unanimously accepted. This report documents a novel case of multiple OCD lesions affecting the left knee and a solitary defect of the right elbow in a patient with acquired human growth hormone (hGH) deficiency and supplementation. hGH deficiency and hormone replacement may be related to the development of OCD lesions.

Intrauterine growth restriction, human placental development and trophoblast cell death.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a failure to achieve the growth potential of a fetus that is promised by the genetic constitution and environmental influences endogenous to the pregnancy. Optimal placental development and the ability of the placenta to compensate for stimulus-induced injury are central in promotion of normal fetal growth. In this review, we will overview placental development with a focus on how villous structure relates to function. We will also describe the differentiation and turnover of villous trophoblast while highlighting selected features of microscopic place

Structural aspects of postnatal lung development - alveolar formation and growth.

The human lung is born with a fraction of the adult complement of alveoli. The postnatal stages of human lung development comprise an alveolar stage, a stage of microvascular maturation, and very likely a stage of late alveolarization. The characteristic structural features of the alveolar stage are well known; they are very alike in human and rat lungs. The bases for alveolar formation are represented by immature inter-airspace walls with two capillary layers with a central sheet of connective tissue. Interalveolar septa are formed by folding up of one of the two capillary layers. In the alve

Effects of pollution on human growth and development: an introduction.

Pollution is a worldwide problem and its potential to influence the physiology of human populations is great. Studies of human growth and development in relation to pollution have increased in number and quality since the mid-twentieth century. Many studies have found that some pollutants have detrimental effects on human growth, particularly prenatal growth. The heavy metal, lead, is commonly found in human populations and is related to smaller size at birth and studies have reported decrements that range up to about 200 grams. Noise stress from transportation sources also is related to reduc

Transforming growth factor beta-SMAD2 signaling and aortic arch development.

Molecular processes underlying the remodeling of the symmetric system and the already muscularized pharyngeal arch arteries into an asymmetric aortic arch are slowly becoming unraveled. In normal arch remodeling, selective apoptosis of part of the right dorsal aorta and sixth pharyngeal arch is seen, whereas in the common arch malformations in Tgfbeta2 knockout mice, comprising type B interruption and an aberrant right subclavian artery, selective upregulation of apoptosis is additionally found in the left and/or right fourth artery segment. All pharyngeal arch arteries derive transforming gro

Matrilin-3 is dispensable for mouse skeletal growth and development.

Matrilin-3 belongs to the matrilin family of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and is primarily expressed in cartilage. Mutations in the gene encoding human matrilin-3 (MATN-3) lead to autosomal dominant skeletal disorders, such as multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED), which is characterized by short stature and early-onset osteoarthritis, and bilateral hereditary microepiphyseal dysplasia, a variant form of MED characterized by pain in the hip and knee joints. To assess the function of matrilin-3 during skeletal development, we have generated Matn-3 null mice. Homozygous mutant mice appear n

Control of growth and development of the feto-placental unit.

Classical gene targeting has identified many genes important for fetal and placental development. Null mutation of these genes may lead to fetal growth restriction, malformation or embryonic death. Growth restriction of epigenetic basis can predispose to adult-onset diseases. The mechanisms underlying this process, termed 'fetal programming', are beginning to be understood.

[Cranial development and growth following treatment of craniosynostosis skull deformities].

Craniofacial development may be potentially implicated after vault corrections in cases of craniosynostosis. The aim of this prospective study was the investigation of the surgical effect on calvaria growth, correlating the percentiles of a group of patients before and after craniosynostosis correction in relation to the normal percentiles of growth. The patient population consisted of 71 children; the postoperative follow-up time in 57 patients was more than 12 months. Of the children followed up, 36 were male and 21 female. Thirty-six cases involved untreated non-syndromic craniosynostosis;

Effects of chlorpromazine on growth and development of Dictyostelium discoideum.

Chlorpromazine (5 x 10(-3) M) administered to Dictyostelium discoideum cells inhibited its growth and morphogenesis. Cells treated with chlorpromazine were found to have distorted morphology. At lower doses of chlorpromazine the development was delayed. Early developmental events such as cell streaming, cell aggregations, development of EDTA stable cell contacts, cAMP-chemotaxis etc, were inhibited. Chlorpromazine was also found to inhibit spore formation. Culturing D. discoideum cells on chlorpromazine agar, in supernatant taken from the chlorpromazine treated cells, or co-culturing of chlorp

Growth and development of lungs in siblings with nonimmune hydrops.

Postmortem findings in the lungs of two siblings with nonimmune hydrops and lung hypoplasia are presented. In one, a girl, the hypoplasia was severe, with reduced numbers of airway generations and markedly reduced radial alveolar counts. In the other, a boy, the hypoplasia of both airway and alveolar development was mild. The reason for the difference in the growth of the lungs in these two children is unknown. The additional finding of Noonan's syndrome in the male sibling with mild hypoplasia and in the father is of interest.

Growth and pubertal development in five boys with Noonan's syndrome.

Five boys, each with at least 4 features characteristic of Noonan's syndrome, were studied throughout childhood. In each the height was on or below the 3rd centile. Height velocity was essentially normal during the prepubertal period whereas bone age and pubertal development were delayed. Four boys had cryptorchidism and in 2 no testicular enlargement or spontaneous puberty occurred, necessitating testosterone replacement. Plasma concentrations of luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone before and after stimulation with luteinising hormone-releasing hormone were increased in 4 of

Effects of stocking density on growth performance, feather growth, intestinal development, and serum parameters of geese.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of stocking density on the growth performance, feather growth, intestinal development, and serum parameters of geese. In total, 336 healthy, 28-day-old, male Yangzhou goslings were randomly allotted to 30 plastic wire-floor pens according to 5 stocking densities (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 birds/m2). The results showed that with the stocking density increased from 2 birds/m2 to 6 birds/m2, the body weights of geese at 42 d (P < 0.001) and 70 d (P < 0.001) were reduced by 10.53% and 10.43% respectively, the primary feather lengths of geese at 42 d (P

Development and evaluation of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis during growth.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to establish ranges of angular variation in lordotic and kyphotic curves in normal male and female children and adolescents. METHODS: We developed a pantograph to measure dorsal curves. It consisted of a tripod-supported vertical strut to which an articulated bar was fixed and which had an arm that was able to follow the dorsal surface while moving up and down. This arm was positioned over the C7 spinous process and followed spinous processes to L5 at constant speed. A laser beam was used to ensure the proper positioning of the pantograph and the subject. Normal development and growth of the human neurocranium and cranial base.

The literature on normal development and growth of certain areas of the human head is reviewed, starting with the early induction of the desmal neurocranium. the development of the brain capsule with its dural reinforcement bands and their connection with the basicranium is discussed, as is the primordial chondrocranium, including its bone replacement. Growth of the calvaria and the three cranial fossae is also analysed. Special interest is focused on the anterior fossa, as knowledge of the growth in this area is very important for an understanding of pathogenesis and possibilities of treating

Vitam A deficiency and fetal growth and development in the rat.

Studies were conducted to examine in detail the effects of vitamin A deficiency on fetal growth and development in the rat. The gradations of deficiency were examined in two studies. The first included total vitamin A depletion followed by retinoic acid supplements, and the second included three different levels of restricted intake of retinyl acetate (42, 16, or 8 mug of retinol equivalents/day/kg of body weight) in vitamin A-depleted rats. In the first study, extensive fetal resorption and death were observed in retinoic acid-fed females after day 14 of gestation. These findings confirmed th
