Between pleasure, guilt, and dissociation: How trauma unfolds in the sexuality of childhood sexual abuse survivors.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant risk factor for sexual difficulties in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: In the current study we aimed to expand the understanding of the association between CSA and sexual difficulties by examining the moderating role of traumatic sexuality in the association between CSA and sexual difficulties among a sample of CSA survivors. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The hypothesized moderation model was examined among a sample of 393 CSA survivors. METHODS: Significant interactions were probed using simple slopes tests using the interactions R package. RESU

Perfectionism and Identity Processes in Two Domains: Mediational Roles of Worry, Rumination, Indecisiveness, Shame, and Guilt.

The objective of the study was to assess the relationships between two dimensions of perfectionism, that is, perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns, and identity processes in the domains of future plans and education. It was hypothesized that such consequences of perfectionism as worry, rumination, indecisiveness, and guilt and shame proneness would be mediators of the perfectionism-identity relationship. A total of 696 students took part in the study (M age = 26.74, SD = 7.56). It was found that perfectionistic strivings may promote the development of identity by supporting ad

Roles of Guilt Cognitions in Trauma-Related Sleep Disturbance in Military Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Objective/Background: Despite a well-established role of guilt cognitions in the maintenance and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), relationships of guilt cognitions to nightmares are not well understood. This study investigated the ways in which guilt cognitions, related to traumatic events, influenced the relationship between combat exposure and trauma-related sleep disturbance in military Veterans with PTSD. Participants: We recruited a sample of 50 Veterans with PTSD who completed study measures at a screening session. Methods: Participants completed self-report measures of

Female Gender, Marital and Family Problems, and Feelings of Guilt Are Related to Self-Immolation Suicide Attempts.

BACKGROUND: Self-immolation (SI) is considered one of the most painful, dramatic, and at the same time most inexplicable methods of suicide, with a high social impact. Prevalence rates are particularly high in Iran, and in north-western Iran specifically. Here, we report sociodemographic, psychological, and psychiatric characteristics of patients attempting self-immolation (PSIs), compared to patients with accident burns (PABs). METHOD: Patients referred to the Burns Emergency Unit of the Besat Hospital (Hamadan, Iran) were enrolled in the present study between winter 2015 and summer 2016. Af

[Sense of guilt in sexually abused children : Mediating role of avoidance coping on anxiety and self-esteem].

Prior studies have suggested self-blame and sense of guilt as important elements associated with the effects of childhood sexual abuse on adult survivors (Cantón-Cortés, Cantón, Justicia & Cortés, 2011). However, few studies have explored the potential impact of the sense of guilt on outcomes in child victims. This study examines the mediating role of avoidance coping on the relationship between sense of guilt and outcomes (anxiety and self-esteem) in sexually abused children. The sample consisted of 447 sexually abused children (319 girls and 128 boys) aged 6 to 12. Path analysis indicated th

Looking into the crystal ball of our emotional lives: emotion regulation and the overestimation of future guilt and shame.

In the present study, we examined the impact of emotion regulation on the intensity bias in guilt and shame. Fifty-two undergraduates either forecasted their emotions and emotion regulation following a guilt- and shame-eliciting situation or reported their actual experienced emotions and employed emotion regulation. Results showed a clear intensity bias, that is, forecasters predicted to experience more guilt and shame than experiencers actually experienced. Furthermore, results showed that forecasters predicted to employ less down-regulating emotion regulation (i.e. less acceptance) and more

"I've let screens take over": Maternal Guilt About Media and Relations to Children's Problematic Media Use.

Parents today face increasing challenges in managing children's media use, which are often accompanied by intense feelings of guilt. This study examines the prevalence and predictors of mother's parental media guilt surrounding their own and their child's media use. Using structural equation modeling, we analyzed data from 474 U.S. mothers (65% White, M child age = 7.48 yrs). Approximately half of mothers endorsed moderate or higher levels of guilt on several media guilt related items. Maternal guilt about their child's media use was significantly associated with higher maternal depression, lo

Shame, Guilt and Psychedelic Experience: Results from a Prospective, Longitudinal Survey of Real-World Psilocybin Use.

The classic psychedelic psilocybin has attracted special interest across clinical and non-clinical settings as a potential tool for mental health. Despite increasing attention to challenging psychedelic experiences, few studies have explored the relevance of shame-related processes with psychedelic use. This prospective, longitudinal study involved sequential, automated, web-based surveys that collected data from 679 adults planning to use psilocybin in naturalistic settings at timepoints before and after psilocybin use. State and trait shame and feelings of guilt were collected using validate

Online Narratives of Methamphetamine Use and Risky Sexual Behavior: Can Shame-Free Guilt Aid in Recovery?

Methamphetamine (meth) use is a recurring public health challenge in the U.S. In 2016, approximately 1.6 million Americans reported using meth. Meth use is associated with a number of adverse outcomes, including those associated with users' sexual health. In particular, meth use is linked to an increased risk for sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies. While studies have examined associations between substance use of various types-including meth use, and shame and guilt-few studies have examined relationships among substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and shame and guilt. When uncertainty becomes guilt: The moralisation of home urinary stoma care after bladder cancer surgery in China.

In post-discharge urinary stoma care, family members are often expected not only to perform technical tasks but also to interpret bodily problems and decide when professional help is needed. Existing research has documented caregiver burden, distress, and psychological strain extensively, but less is known about how guilt is produced through family relationships, uncertainty, and moral expectations of care. This study examines how informal caregivers of bladder cancer patients with urinary stomas in China described guilt, self-blame, and uncertainty in home care, and under what conditions unce

Survivor Guilt as a Mediator Between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Pessimism Schema After Türkiye-Syria Earthquake.

This research examines the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics of the survivors and their changing social situations after the earthquake and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and survivor's guilt. It also examines the mediating role of survivor guilt between early maladaptive schemas and PTSD severity. The study involved 127 people exposed to the 6 February 2023, southern and central Türkiye and northern and western Syria earthquake. Participants' sociodemographic characteristics, changing living conditions due to the earthquake, and feelings and thoughts of survivor gu

Internet Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Maternal Guilt in a Child Abuse Case: A Single Case Study.

This single case study explored the effectiveness of Internet Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (I-PCIT) for addressing maternal guilt in a case of child abuse. I-PCIT was implemented because traditional PCIT was challenging due to the family's geographical constraints and the mother's professional commitments. The study utilized multiple assessment tools, including the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), to measure the therapy's impact on the child's behavior and the mother's depressive symptoms. The case conceptualization highlighted the mothe

Body-related shame or guilt? Dominant factors in maladaptive eating behaviors among Hungarian and Norwegian university students.

The main purpose of our study was to examine the psychometric properties of Conradts' Weight- and Body-Related Shame and Guilt Scale (WEB-SG) and associations of body shame and guilt with maladaptive eating behaviors and general chronic shame among Hungarian and Norwegian university students. Therefore, we collected data from 561 university students from both nations in a cross-sectional questionnaire study. Participants completed the following standardized self-report questionnaires in this online survey: WEB-SG, Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26) and Experience of Shame Scale (ESS). We tested

Higher Trait Levels of Guilt may Protect Against Gambling, Whereas Higher State Levels Lead to Riskier Behaviour.

Research on the role of affect in problem gambling remains scarce to date, although it has been proposed that trait-levels of negative self-conscious emotions (SCEs) could be potential risk factors. We report two studies investigating the relationship between negative SCEs, gambling, and risky behavior. In the first study, we investigated shame, guilt and self-disgust in a group of problem-gamblers and control non-gamblers. In the second study, we investigated if experimentally manipulating state levels of guilt, using a narration-induction paradigm, in students with different levels of gambli

Does guilt mediate the association between tonic immobility and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in female trauma survivors?

Tonic immobility (TI) is an involuntary freezing response that can occur during a traumatic event. TI has been identified as a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), although the mechanism for this relationship remains unclear. This study evaluated a particular possible mechanism for the relationship between TI and PTSD symptoms: posttraumatic guilt. To examine this possibility, we assessed 63 female trauma survivors for TI, posttraumatic guilt, and PTSD symptom severity. As expected, the role of guilt in the association between TI and PTSD symptom severity was consistent with m

Moral emotions in motion: a cross-sectional study of shame, guilt, and disordered eating in UK university athletes.

BACKGROUND: This research focuses on subclinical eating pathology symptoms (EPS) in young adult university athletes, addressing a gap in studies involving nonelite athletes. Social transitions, athletic and academic pressures, body shame, and participation in weight-sensitive sports contribute to an elevated risk of EPS. This study aims to examine how demographic factors (gender, age, type of sport, living arrangements, and duration of membership) and adverse moral emotions (shame and guilt) predict EPS. Additionally, it investigates whether shame and guilt mediate the relationship between spo

Differential Associations between Guilt and Shame Proneness and Religious Coping Styles in a Diverse Sample of Young Adults.

Positive religious coping is linked with better mental health outcomes following physical and sexual abuse while negative religious coping is associated with poorer outcomes. Religious coping styles may be linked with dispositional tendencies to experience guilt or shame. This study compared the associations between guilt and shame proneness and religious coping styles and tested whether abuse history moderated these relationships. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 425 college students (n = 145 with physical and/or sexual abuse history, n = 280 with no abuse history). Participants comp

Parenting on a digital leash: time pressure, parenting guilt, and emotional exhaustion in Chinese dual-earner families.

BACKGROUND: Digital tools are increasingly integrated into parenting, but their psychological costs remain unclear. This study investigates whether digitally-mediated parenting intensity predicts emotional exhaustion among Chinese dual-earner parents, and whether time pressure and parenting guilt mediate this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 713 dual-earner parents from 45 communities across 13 cities in Jiangsu Province, China. Participants completed measures of digital parenting intensity, time pressure, parenting guilt, and emotional exhaustion. We tested

Mediational Roles of Not Just Right Experiences and Disgust Proneness Between Deontological Guilt and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms.

Contributions suggest that deontological guilt, as opposed to altruistic guilt, is involved in obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. However, the variables explaining this link have been insufficiently explored despite studies suggesting the role of not-just-right experiences (NJREs) and disgust sensitivity (DS). This study provides data testing the mediational role of these variables in the pathways linking deontological guilt to OC symptoms. We administered self-report questionnaires to a sample of 189 adults (25 males; Mage = 29.72, SDage = 4.93) measuring OC symptoms, two dimensions of deont
